Construction of an underground car parking2 Cost estimation of an underground car parking suitable for 30 cars at Oran Park Introduction Oran Park Development is the first phase of the development in the South West growth corridor. On completion Oran Park will have the following; a 50,000 square metre town centre and two neighbourhood centres, 36 kilometres of walking and cycling routes and 148 hectares of open space. This report is about the cost estimation of constructing an underground car parking adjacent to the retirement village with a capacity of approximately 30 cars. The figure below is a master plan of Oran Park development. Fig 1: Oran Park Masterplan Underground car parking Underground parking is a structured parking facility constructed below the ground level, either as a building basement or covered with a structure above(Bhuyan, 2015, p. 368). Havingthe car parking facilities underground assists in freeing up space above the ground
Construction of an underground car parking3 level for activities that require air and light .it also hides cars from the ground or streetscapes, thus allowing more space for active use such as retail, cafes, restaurants among other social and economic activities to be carried out effectively.it assists in freeing up space above the ground level for activities that require air and light(Chrest, 2012, p. 117). Thefigure below is an illustration of underground parking. Fig 2: An illustration of underground parking Construction of an underground parking The construction of underground parking requires an architectural firm or architect, a knowledgeable contractor, a team of subcontractors and a cooperative client who can help to get the project completed within the given time and the specified budget. The construction of the underground parking in Oran Park development will require a great deal of machinery, equipment and site preparation(Iqbal, 2016, p. 272). The architect who will be involved in the construction will be tasked to carry out all the design and consultancy works to ensure that the underground car parking is designed according to the set standards. The contractor and subcontractors will carry out the actual construction of the project.
Construction of an underground car parking4 The construction of underground parking with dimensionsof approx. 55 m by 15 m by 4 m deep and with a capacity of roughly 30 cars. Will need the use of techniques and materials which falls under the highest quality ratings as much as possible for the purpose of ensuring safety, stability and longevity(Mulley, 2014, p. 361). The equipment and machinery required A wide range of equipment and machinery will be required for the construction of the underground car parking. Some of the equipment that will be required include; i)Excavators The excavators will be required during the excavation of the ground to remove soils and rocks to create space where the underground park will be located. The figure below is an example of an excavator that can be used during excavation. Fig 3: an excavator. ii)Bulldozers The bulldozer will be required during the construction of the underground car parking to remove a large amount of earth, soils, and rocks from the site of construction to other parts that may require landfilling. The bulldozers will also be needed to carry out various preliminary site works, such as; stripping off the surface vegetation(Shoup, 2017, p. 228).

Construction of an underground car parking5 iii)Rippers The rippers will be required during construction to loosen the layers of soil rocks and the man- made surfaces by using the tractive forces of a prime mover. They will be of great significance in the construction of the foundations. The rippers will also be used in the preparation of trenches, canals and stripping works. The figure below is an illustration of a ripper. Fig4: Ripper used to strip and move soil and rocks iv)Rock drills The rock drills will be required during the construction to help in blasting rocks without necessary requiring large compressors. There are many rocks on the construction site that might require drilling to pave the way for the construction, and the rock drills will be of great help in carrying out drilling of rocks. v)Trailers The trailers will be used to move earth materials from the excavation point to other parts where they may be required for landfilling. The trailers will also be used for transporting the construction materials to the site.
Construction of an underground car parking6 Materials labour and operation requirements Various types of materials will be required in the construction of the underground car parking facility some of the materials that will be required include; Formwork timber, hungers that will be required in joining methods, pre-cast concrete, hardcore to provide firm underground layer, mesh to which will be used for reinforcing the slab, waterproofing which will be used to ensure sound footing waterproofing, blocks which will be used to carry out the masonry works. Various types of labour and operations will be required in the construction some of the them include; landscaping operations, excavation operations, stockpile protection, trench digging, fill placement, backfilling, ground compaction, waste allowable, vegetation clearing, formwork preparation, finishing and completion(Zhao, 2012, p. 45). The estimated cost of construction After the estimation was carried out by using of various methods and techniques of estimating the cost of construction projects. The total cost of constructing the underground car parking with a capacity of 30 cars is estimated to be $ 444548.5.which can be broken down as follows; οMachines and equipment $ 9200 οMaterials $ 340026.4 οLabour and operations $ 95322.1 The graph below shows the estimated cost of constructing the underground car parking inOran Park development.
