The sense of insecurity among the public of Australia is on a rising trend. It is believedby them that they are no more safe on the roads and even in their homes considering theincreasing rate of crime in the country. These beliefs and increasing crimes in the society can beseconded by an increase of a huge number in the rate of crimes occurring in different strata ofsociety. In consequence to these trends provocative reactions have been witnessed from thesociety, which clearly reflect the increasing fear and concern for safety among the public. In theyear 2013-14 it was reported that the number of offenders in the nation have increased by 4%. Ithas also been witnessed that the Public Disorder crimes are the most prevalent among othercrime, followed by offences related to drugs. Apart from these offences, it has been observed thatthere is an increase of 19% in the cases of sexual assaults and other connected offences (Howmedia have shaped our perception of race and crime, 2014). In accordance to a 2012 reportpublished by National Australian Homicide Monitoring programs, it has been understood that theHomicide rate has shown declining figures since 1989-90. Moreover, it has also been ascertainedthe rate of murder taking place in the country has fallen and currently is in the form of one per100,000. On the other hand, the instances of robberies taking place in the country has also shownrates which are declining in nature. In accordance to a report published by Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC)it has been ascertained that the Australians in their late teens are showing an increasing rate ofcrimes. It has been stated that in accordance to a survey it has been ascertained that an increasingnumber of children in their late teens are indulging criminal activities from different categories.The report further states that in the past four years, though the aggregate figure of peopleindulging in crimes have reduced but the involvement of young children between the age of 15and 19 have tremendously increased (Teenagers are Australia's most arrested people, 2015). Theprimary category of crimes which have been witnessing young offenders are theft, illicit drugsand actions to cause injury to others. It has been further determined that the fundamentalrationale behind this trend is the influence of peers, poverty and vicinity to such actions due toproactive media, apart from many other factors. However, it has been assessed that in the present times measuring and determination ofcrime in any society has become a complex and cumbersome task. Determination of crime isdependent various factors such as social, economic and political.
