Topic: To understand importance of strategic performance management in decision making: Astudy of State Bank of India (SBI). CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Background of study:Strategic performance management is very much important as it will be beneficial forhuman resource and then their management and helping in building team as well as individualperformance. State Bank of India is the biggest banking institution in Indian economy and ismultinational and public-sector bank which was nationalised in the year 1956. There are varioustypes of products which SBI is offering to its customer like customer banking, finance andinsurance, saving securities, wealth management, mortgage loans and many more. Governments,employees, creditors, customers, shareholders and investors are leading stakeholders of SBI allover the world where they are giving their services. The following study will be conducted toanalyse the importance of strategic performance management in SBI as this is the key to ensurethat goals of organisation have been fulfilled. SBI will be using balance score card asperformance management techniques which will be helping it in decision making process whichwill be covered in this study as well.Aim:To understand importance of strategic performance management in decision making: a casestudy of SBI.Objectives:To understand meaning of strategic performance management.To analyse evidence of performance management at strategic level in SBI.To examine balance scorecard theory and its benefits to SBI.Research Questions:Q1 What is the importance of strategic performance management for SBI?Q2 Is performance measurement appropriate to SBI?Q3 What are the benefits and limitations of balance scorecard theory in performancemanagement at SBI?1
Rationale:The following study is done so that reader can easily understand the meaning of strategicperformance management and is it evidence at strategic level in SBI (Shafiee, Lotfi and Saleh,2014). The study will be helping many group of people who can clearly understand strategicperformance and its theory which is used by SBI. The study need to be conducted to analysis thedecision-making process which SBI is using, objectives of SBI and is this performance ismatching with expectation or not.Significance:The present dissertation will be important for various types of groups like students,researcher, investors, governments, company and its all stakeholders as well. Students canunderstand the meaning of strategic performance management and how balance scorecard ishelpful for SBI in its decision making. Researcher can further conduct their research work on thebasis of this study. It will be easy for investors they can know is SBI beneficial for investment init. Balanced score card is the widely used tool to analyse the performance of activities withstrategies defined that are made to achieve the mission and vision of company. It focuses on allthe sectors by developing strategies to improve the overall performance. It consists smallfinancial factors that helps in identifying the variances. SBI BSC is mainly dependent on foursegments. These are :Financial- It includes all the activities that are related to finance sector. It shows that whatpeople and investors think about the banking sector (Balance-scored of SBI, 2018). Its mainobjective is to increase profitability and market share. The operating profit plays a major role infinancial indicator. It provides an insight that enterprise is able to earn enough profits. In recenttimes SBI performance is decreased due to increasing NPA's. This is affecting their profitabilityand growth. They have to develop strategies regarding how to cover those to improve theirfinancial position. Internal business process- It states that how to improve the internal activities within the SBI toimprove efficiency. It also focuses on increasing profits through improvements in products andservices. It focuses on key performance areas through which services quality can be improved.SBI internal process consists of various activities such as services, schemes, applications, etc. Soto measure these the growth of each activities is monitored. It helps in providing best services tocustomers and increasing internal efficiency. Customers- They are the main parameters that helps in determining the organisation image. Itindicates that what customers thinks about SBI. It views performance on the basis of customersperspective and stake holders for which SBI is providing services. The amount of customersshows the SBI market share and its growth (Balance-scored of SBI, 2018. Customersperformance can be identified by their retention, satisfaction, etc. It is useful in identifying SBIimage and its growth by attracting new customers. Learning and growth- It shows that whether the organisation is able to grow or not. It can beidentified by its past performance and above indicators. It is useful in developing strategies forgrowth by evaluating the performance. Various indicators like infrastructure, technology,culture , etc. is involved while creating growth strategy. SBI growth is based on its employees3
skills, education, turn over, etc. moreover, it also includes the growth of other bank branches inthe industry. 4
