1. Introduction
Computers have taken over every manually operational devices because of their speed of
operations and greater accessibility. Current world has computers in different forms i.e.
smartphones, tablets, desktops, laptops, smart devices, etc. They have occupied almost every
individual’s life irrespective of the area of application. This report helps in understanding the use
of Microsoft Excel with given data. Furthermore, the benefits of teaching Microsoft Office in
secondary school have also been elaborated in this report. The three technical advances which
are used by students and staff individuals for learning and teaching respectively are mentioned in
this report. This informative content helps in understanding the benefits of computer skills in
modern day communities and societies. Every person must learn basic computing so that there is
scope of greater development and more relevance to the modern day scientific developments.
2. Findings
The Excel operations have been performed according to given instructions. It was
assessed that out of 9 students 5 passed the exams and 4 failed. The following screenshots have
been taken regarding the data view and formula view. It depicts that the performance of students
is average. The results are not so satisfactory and it can be stated that there is a scope of
development so that next result comes out to be maximum passed students. The formulas that
have been applied for calculating the sum, average and pass or fail condition are depicted in the
screenshots.

3. Benefits of teaching Microsoft Office
Microsoft Office is the software tool which is used by individuals for completing their
business operations. This software based application is also used in executing tasks like
maintaining accounts, developing reports, publishing layouts, etc. Currently the use of Microsoft

Office has increased on a large scale. Despite of the developments in this field and the significant
options availability, there has been no compromise in customer share of Microsoft Office. This
powerful tool was devised to be operational on devices that are compatible with Windows
operating system and are designed with subscription facilities. Secondary school is a place where
individuals develop both physically and mentally. There are large number of benefits which can
be experienced if Microsoft Office is taught to every person in the school. These are described as
follows:
1. Report writing and developing letters or articles for a school magazine is easily
accomplished using the Microsoft Office Suite. It beholds all the possible operations that
one needs to perform at different stages of professional and personal work. When school
curriculum involves this particular application essential for learning then students will be
able to operate computers more swiftly (Gaskin, Vargas and Marks, 2013).
2. Scope for improvements in Microsoft Office is quite vast. If people are taught the
techniques and methodologies for handling this then they can present their stories,
pictures, views and other information in a better way. From business proposals to
delivering a concept, Microsoft Office covers it all.
3. Teaching this software application at a secondary school means adding practical values to
the learning. Often theoretical knowledge is not enough to overcome the real time
situations. Learning becomes easy with Microsoft Office. There are certain keyboard
shortcuts and key links which people are able to use when they are friendlier with this
software application.
4. Diversity of operation and wide usability has enabled Microsoft Office to take the place
it has. Unlike earlier computers, this application suite not only helps in professional
operations but personal needs and requirements are also fulfilled. For instance, a student
needs to deliver a lecture or present certain paper regarding his project research then
PowerPoint and Microsoft Word are helpful in easy delivery. Furthermore, the
visualisations help grasp concept in more effective way (Sawhney and et. al., 2017).
5. About 50 languages are supported in this software application which itself depicts the
accessibility and usability. Individuals can use it according to their convenience and
options. Secondary school can be benefited by this aspect in terms of handling students
from different cultural or linguistic background. Not only students but teachers will also

experience great amount of value addition in their learning experience if they are aware
about this software suite.
4. Technological advances used by staff or students to enhance teaching or learning
Information technology is one of the greatest advances which science or the computer
world has made. The application of this advancement is quite large scale i.e. from industrial
operations to learning and personal developments. People walk, talk, think and perform their
mental operations with support of technically advanced devices. The learning or teaching sector
has been benefited by these advances when it is considered in terms of staff or students:
 Online platforms
 Video lectures
 Smart class
Teachers are the first individuals that have to learn about anything new so that they can
deliver the best quality information to their students. This is a cyclic process of learning which is
important so that progress and development are not hindered. The growth of internet or online
surfing platforms has drastically changed or transformed the entire scenario (Andrews, West and
Dark, 2014). There are video lectures and conferences which can take place live in distant
universities so that students are updated regarding new learning and skills. The internet has
enabled individuals to experience the theoretical concepts with visualisation which is enabled
only through computer devices. Hence, internet and online learning platforms is one of the major
technical advances which have been utilised by the teachers and students.
Smart class is a concept that was originated about 7 years back when internet based
education was on a rise. According to this technology, every classroom shall be equipped with
video projectors which are connected with a computer. Students will learn both theoretical and
practical concepts. There are four basic sources of learning i.e. cognitive, visual, hearing and
sensory learning. Students do not have uniformity in their learning style; it completely depends
on the person and their brain structure. The smart classes have helped every student to learn in
much more fascinating manner and grasp relative concepts easily. Furthermore, there is a less
rigidity and more interest towards studies by students. Staff members have been benefited by this
aspect in such a way that they do not have to invest much on stationary and paper work. From
maintenance of records to storing the details regarding various school and learning based aspects.

Hence, the aforementioned technical advances have helped both students and staff
members to function, train and make individuals learn in a better and more effective manner. The
diversity and availability of in-depth information not only widens the knowledge level but also
supports build up of innovation. Considering the young minds of earlier times and the ones
present in the current time are completely different. People have developed better techniques for
operating and functioning in different areas of applications. For example, business organisations
have engaged their maximum operations with use of information technology. It has not only
helped in efficient data handling and information transfer but the features like analysis and
forecasting have improved effectiveness of decision making process. The students that are
capable of handling technically advanced devices have greater scope in their professional careers
because entire world is inclining towards use of such devices and software. Training and
education have become much easier and simpler through use of information technology
primarily. Furthermore, it can be stated that there is a requirement of every school and
educational institute to imbibe technology so that effective learning can be encouraged.
5. Conclusion
In this report, the basic excel operations have been performed for calculating the sum,
average and pass/fail conditions for the students of a class. These have been depicted in the form
of screenshots in this report. After application of respective formulae, it is analysed that 5
students passed while 4 students failed. The pass condition was calculated using IF function.
Furthermore, the report consists of information regarding the benefits which are acquired when
Microsoft Office is taught in secondary schools. It not only helps in building skills of students at
the grass root level but will also support the sustenance in professional world. Moreover, there
are certain technically advances which are used by staff and students for enhancing teaching and
learning. These include internet based online learning platforms, video lectures, information
technology, smart class, etc. In the report, the use of these advances has been described which
enlightens the vast application of computer and applications in the real time basis.
