Unified Joint Ops Principles Exam: Tasks and Recommendations

This exam assesses comprehension and analysis of the principles, common operating precepts, multinational tenets, joint and service functions, and unified action in joint operations. The exam includes tasks and recommendations for forming a multinational joint task force (MNJTF) to accomplish various operations in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. The tasks include forming a MNJTF headquarters, clearing northern Sumatra of enemy forces, securing the Strait of Malacca, establishing port opening and distribution, and supporting Indonesian military forces to suppress potential unrest/subversive activity in Aceh. The recommendations include selecting appropriate units from a list provided and considering the capabilities and limitations of each unit. Purpose
This examination assesses comprehension and analysis of the principles, common
operating precepts, multinational tenets, joint and service functions, and unified
action in joint operations.
Instructions
 This examination is worth 40% of the C300 block grade and is due at the end of
the block, after you have completed all C300 lessons. You may use the C300
online lessons, readings, and references to help you answer the exam.
 You may not discuss this assignment with anyone other than a DDE faculty
member or your academic advisor. All work MUST be your own. You may NOT
discuss this examination or your answers with any current or former CGSOC
student.
 Your answers will be typed and double-spaced. Use Arial 12-pitch font and one-
inch margins. Type your answers directly into the spaces provided. Your typed
responses will be double-spaced sentences (not bullets).
 If you state something from doctrine, the readings or the lessons as part of your
answer, you MUST give a citation in accordance with ST 22-2. You may use
parenthetical citations, endnotes, or footnotes on this exam.

exam. You must complete this assignment and all Phase 1 requirements before
you can progress on to TASS or ADL Phase 2.

1. (75 points – 500 word limit. 100 words per task) Reference the Indo-Asia-Pacific
Situation D, several tasks that must be accomplished to support operations are listed
below. For each of the listed tasks, recommend and justify one prospective unit from the
list provided to accomplish each of the likely tasks. Ensure you consider the tradeoff
between a unit’s capabilities and limitations in your justification.
TASKS
A. Form a MNJTF headquarters within a Joint Operations Area to be prepared
for non-permissive entry operations.
Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) refers to a collection of multinational
formation that consist of units of military forces. The initial Headquarter for MNJFT
was in N’Djamena. This unit was formed to bring insurgency of Boko Haram to an
end.
However, in the current scenario, the MNJFT headquarters that can be formed
within Joint Operation Area consist of Indonesia and the Strait of Malacca. Since the
main support in this operation is offered by United States of America, then, the main
MNJFT headquarters should be in USA1. For this particular task, 353rd Special
operations Group is the most appropriate prospective unit so as to have special
skills for non-permissive entry operation.

B. Be prepared to clear northern Sumatra of enemy forces, stabilize and
handover to Indonesian security and military forces.
International stability is very important. In this scenario, we realize that Indonesia
and Strait of Malacca are regionally and global significant.
However, there are some areas in Indonesia where conflicts continue to worsen.
These areas become a threat to Indonesia and other countries who wish to conduct
economic activities2. Northern Sumatra need to be addressed so as to maintain
peace in the country.
Regional military units that support local commanders need to be sensitized on
importance of supporting Indonesian National Government so as to promote stability
in the area. 1-1st Special Forces Group need to be considered in this task so as to
form a strong special force group for Indonesian National Government rather than
operating locally.
C. Secure the Strait of Malacca (prevent interference with global trade).
Indonesia and Strait of Malacca are very important as far as regional and global
operations are concerned. These areas are very important to United States of
America in economic empowerment. This area offer great resources to United
States of America, Middle East and Asia. Resources such as oil, telecommunication
infrastructure and gas are among the resources that require security of Strait of
Malacca.

There should be formation of military security force that will offer platform for stability
of Strait of Malacca. There should be formation of legal framework to empower Strait
of Malacca in local economic operations so as to limit interference from international
operations3. The unit to be considered in this task is 353rd Special operations Group.
This group will monitor operations at Strait of Malacca.
D. Establish port opening and distribution for the Joint Operations Area.
There is great economic empowerment through exports and imports. The Middle
East and Asia conduct global operations with Strait of Malacca via imports and
exports. Therefore, there is a need to have port opening and distribution for the Joint
Operational Area. This process require international operation that should be
initiated by United States of America.
Ratification of the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS); joint maritime
patrols and presence of international naval forces, and regional cooperation
agreements are the main legal frameworks that need to be implemented so as to
establish port opening and distribution for Joint Operational Area.
In order to secure port operations, the unit to be considered is CTF-70 Battle Force
(Carrier Strike Group: consisting of one carrier with air wing, two cruisers, two
destroyers, one submarine, and one combat logistic ship).
E. Support Indonesian Military Forces to suppress potential unrest/subversive
activity in Aceh.

Subversive activity in Aceh is created by local military commanders who gain
regional military support from local military forces. This results to unrest due to lack
of support to Indonesian National Government.
There should be formation of special force group who main mandate is to fight
international criminals and terrorists4. This will be important so as to identify enemies
of Indonesia. This special force group should comprise of Indonesian military forces
and other military forces from regional and global areas so as to maintain stability in
Aceh. Thus, the unit to be incorporated in this task is 1-1st Special Forces Group.

2. (10 points – 200 word limit) Reference the Indo-Asia-Pacific Situation D and the
tasks listed in the preceding question, describe how the Air Force (AF) core missions of
command and control (C2) and rapid global mobility (RGM) enhance or enable Joint
Forces to conduct these tasks.
AF C2 (100 word limit):
The Air Force (AF) core missions of command and control (C2) played a significant role
in supporting Joint Forces Operations. This involved protecting main ports and airfields
that could be attacked by terrorists and international criminals. It also secured critical
energy and communications infrastructure from destruction by criminal organizations
such as Al-Qaeda and more recently ISIS affiliated groups.
AF C2 managed to promote free navigation as well as enhancing over flight operations.
This was done through intervention by United States of America whose responsibility in
forming Joint Forces cannot go unrewarded5. This unit also managed to combat drug
trafficking that took place in distribution channels such as ports.

AF RGM (100 word limit):
Rapid global mobility AF RGM is a special unit that facilitated operations conducted by
Joint Forces. This unit was involved in Protection of Civil Shipping Operations that
prevented criminals from hindering economic activities created via imports and exports.
Again, the unit managed to support Joint Forces in combating terrorism that was
planned by international terrorist organizations such as Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), Jemaah
Ansharut Tauhid (JAT), Al-Qaeda and ISIS affiliated groups. The unit also participated
in Homeland Defense Operations to combat maritime piracy and transnational crime. All
this activities were initiated by United States of America so as to offer support to Joint
Forces.
3. (10 points – 300 word limit) Reference the Indo-Asia-Pacific Situation D and the
tasks listed in question #1, select three tasks and for each describe how space
capabilities enhance or enable Joint Forces to conduct these tasks.
Task 1 (100 word limit):
Establish a maritime exclusion zone around Sumatra.
This task was done so as to secure maritime resources around Sumatra. The support
offered by space technology was capable of securing Sumatra from attacks. Space
capabilities enhance Joint Forces to monitor enemy operations in maritime zone of
Sumatra.
In that case, this zone remain secure because the activities around Sumatra are
operated from a common space point generated by Joint Forces. The information
planned by enemies and terrorists against destruction of maritime zone of Sumatra are

monitored before the enemy can execute them6. That how space capabilities assisted
the Joint Forces to secure maritime zone. This was a source of information on what the
enemies planned to do to Sumatra.
Task 2 (100 word limit):
Support Indonesian Military Forces to suppress potential unrest/subversion in Aceh.
This is another that Joint Forces needed to address so as enhance stability in the area.
Indonesian military forces faced a lot of resistance from local military commanders who
managed to manipulate regional military forces. In that connection, Indonesian National
government lacked support from regional military forces who supported local military
commanders.
Space capabilities enabled Joint Forces to trace local military commanders who
manipulated regional military forces. Space capabilities enabled Joint Forces to launch
attacks from space7. This operation assisted Indonesian Military Forces to fight local
military commanders so as to maintain stability in all provinces of Indonesia.
Task 3 (100 word limit):
Secure major ports and airfields, and critical energy and communications infrastructure.

Import and export facilitated economic empowerment of Indonesia, Strait of Malacca,
Middle East and Asia. Therefore, United States of America initiated Space Technology
so as to secure major ports and airfields. This was done by USA so as to protect their
interests. Space capabilities monitored operations in major ports and airfield by use of
space crafts that patrolled major ports and airfields. Energy resources such as gas and
oil were of great importance to USA. This made USA to provide space capabilities in
order to secure major ports and airfields. By so doing, USA managed to secure her
interests.
4. (5 points – 100 word limit) Reference the Indo-Asia-Pacific Situation D, explain
which cyberspace operation is the most challenging when forming a
multinational joint task force (MNJTF) and why.
Military cyberspace operation is very important to MNJTF. The cybercrime operation
that challenge MNJFT is called military engagement, security cooperation and
deterrence. This is because, MNJTF is a joint force that consist of several military forces
from different countries8. Therefore, each country has a commanding unit headed by a
commander. When forming a joint force, these forces are re-formed so as to incorporate
all the forces. Thus, carrying out cyberspace operation on military engagement, Security
Corporation and deterrence become a challenge due to superiority complex of these
military units that form a joint force. This need to be overcome so as to enhance

process of cyberspace operation that can assist MNJFT in combating crimes such as
terrorism and drug trafficking.
