INTRODUCTION
Equality and diversity can be referring to as the process of promoting equality in term of
opportunity for all and with the help of diversity giving each individual a chance to show their
potentials to achieve something, by remaining free from any kind of prejudice and
discrimination. For promoting this within an organisation a number of Acts are also being
formulated by the government or corporate authorities for avoiding any kind of bias behaviour,
discrimination and exploitation of people at the workplace (Barak, 2016). The equality and
diversity plays a significant role within an organisation as by developing of a workforce belong
to different background and having several other skills or capability it become easier for a brand
to deal with the changes that are regularly getting anticipated within the marketplace. Hence to
determine further about equality and diversity this project has been conducted which is based on
TESCO a well-known retailer. This report contain aims and objectives over which the
investigation depends, secondary study in the form of literature review, methodology for
providing an idea regarding set of methods used for performing study. In addition to this it also
involves the primary data collection, its interpretation, findings and then reflection over the
methods.

Overview of topic
Equality at workplace is defined as a culture or behaviour maintained within an
organisation where each individual working their get equal chance to perform work or show their
capabilities. They are being judged over their skills despite of background, culture, skills, gender
or age group to which they belong. On the other hand, diversity mainly refers to the
organisational setting where its workforce includes people that are from varying religion,
education, cultural background, ethnicity etc. Both terms form up an essential part within an
organisation by managing a competent workforce that help in achieving the competitive edge
(Wilson, 2014). The retail industry is considering to be one of the competitive sector among
other where changes on regular basis get anticipated to deal with a cut throat competition in
order to achieve maximum market share. So in order to remain competitive an organisation must

focuses toward managing equality and diversity at workplace so that it can develop a workforce
that are expertise in different skills and at the same time have different knowledge which
combinedly help in enhancing the level of performance that leads to maximum customer reach.
Hence to study further about the ways through which equality and diversity can be maintained
this study is conducted. This study put emphases on TESCO which is a British multination
retailer that offer groceries as well as general merchandise throughout the world and due to its
presence at global level it maintains a diversified workforce which support in getting better
information regarding this investigation.
Background of the study
The equality and diversity play a significant role within an organisation by keeping
employees motivated and delegated toward their work. Addition to this it also supports an
organisation to improve its performance at marketplace by regularly brings changes. For further
investigating about this current research is conducted over “ways of managing equality and
diversity”, by considering TESCO (Ravazzani, 2016). This company is a large British
multinational groceries and general merchandise retailer which operates its business throughout
the world. It maintains its presence world-wide where it operates approx. 3400 stores and also
maintain its online presence which make it capable of catering the customers belongs to different
geographical background. As it maintains its business in several different countries TESCO
maintains a diversified workforce that support them in understanding the consumer behaviour
and buying pattern of particular place by recruiting people from that area.

Literature review
Literature review is defined as that part of an investigation which focuses toward
reviewing the already available data or previously performed investigation so that an
understanding can be developed regarding the study which is going to be conducted. Other then
this it also helps in getting an idea regarding nature of study, for considering it as a base to
proceed the investigation further.
The importance of managing equality and diversity for an organisation like TESCO.
Fine-Davis, M. and Faas, D., 2014 stated that equality and diversity within an organisation
means a lot of things as it mainly includes respecting staff members equally without considering
their personal characteristics such as gender, age, race, experience cultural background, sex
orientation and many more. An organisations’ internal culture when embedded with equality and
diversity as their core practices then it likely to boost up the business’s chance of getting succeed
at marketplace. This is so because hiring people from all kind of background help it in widening
the scope for range of skills or new ideas within the workplace which in turn leads to brings
improvement within current working. In relevance of selected firm, they are well aware about
their rules, regulations, policy which are being adopted by them at all aspects. Moreover, it is
also seen that they need to as they are operated globally, they have been into regulating this
policy of equality & diversity with proper considerations which assist them in hiring recruiting
candidates or applicants around the globe. In reference of chosen entity they follow inclusion &
diversity policy as they treat people accordingly in better way. Further, they are focused towards
establishing of inclusive workplace as they help in achieving of organisational goals in
appropriate way. For example- they have five colleague networks which are The Armed Forces
at Tesco, Bame Black Asian & Minority Ethnic), Disability at Tesco, LGBTQ+ & Women at
Tesco.
Selected entity follow same policy of equality & diversity at workplace and are rigid on
these policies. Furthermore, they have single standard across globe. For example- comparing it

with Morrisons they have been following equality act with strict rules. But in focus on Gender
Pay Gap company was accused in U.S for low paying low wages because of gender. Indicators
for effectiveness of implementation of equality & diversity policy are review data policies,
feedback from survey results, HR reports based on diversity, demographic make-up of
employees etc.
There are number of benefit that TESCO will get while complying with the equality and
diversity at workplace. These are mentioned below:
 Better understanding of consumers: - In order to offer the product or services globally
an organisation have to generate a basic understanding regarding the consumer’s
behaviour so that product can be deliver to them as per their preferences. As TESCO
operates at global level so with the help of managing a diversified workforce belongs to
different cultural background it become easier to get a understanding regarding consumer
behaviour and things they want.
 Increase employee’s satisfaction: - By providing a culture where employees get equal
chance to perform work without any kind of discrimination, then such environment
brings more satisfaction in their work. With the help of maintaining the equality and
diversity at workplace, TESCO would be able to increase the employee’s satisfaction
toward their job which in turn support them in performing well.
The various issues that an enterprise faces in managing equality and diversity at workplace
As per the view point of Sharma, A., 2016 , equality and diversity is considering to be a
most effective and beneficial approach for a company. But the diversity not only involve the
manner ion which people perceive themselves rather it focuses toward how they perceive one
another as it directly affects their interaction. Therefore, in order to work over a wide assortment
of employees to function appropriately for an organisation, human resources professionals of
TESCO are required to deal with the issues effectively that restrict them to manage equality and
diversity at workplace. The number of issues that TESCO may face while managing equality and
diversity are mentioned below:
 Communication: - In order to get succeed within the diversity program an organisation is
required to firstly overcome with the barriers such as perpetual, cultural and language
barrier. Ineffective communication is the main cause behind increasing confusion among
employees which in turn also reduce their morale and leads to lack of team work. So, lack

of clarity in communication may become a major challenge for TESCO to integrate
equality and diversity at workplace.
 Resistance to change: - There are sometimes the employees who refuses to accept the
changes that within the organisational culture or setting which restrict management to
brings improvement and promote equality and diversity at workplace. As a result of
which the changes are not much remain easier to brings within the organisation and at the
same time the mentality of employees to not get adjust with new changes restrict the
improvement.
Different strategies that could be adopt by TESCO to deal with the issues of managing equality
at workplace
As per the view point of Davis, P.J., Frolova, Y. and Callahan, W., 2016, there are number of
challenges that an organisation has to face while implementing equality and diversity at
workplace which restrict them to brings changes in current practices. Therefore, in order to deal
with these issues, the managers of TESCO must work over certain strategies that help them in
dealing with these challenges. These strategies mainly include,
 Inclusion training: - It is about providing training to people belongs to different
background with an aim to make them able to work bitterly with others having different
ability, background, rational etc. By adopting this strategy, the TESCO would be able to
develop a culture of coordination among employees while avoiding the ways to combat
with the risk of harassment and discrimination.
 Free flow of communication: - Another strategy that TESCO can adopt in order to deal
with the issues of managing equality and diversity is that it must focuses toward
implementing free flow of communication throughout the organisation. This will help in
allowing the people to directly interact with the higher management and present them
with issues they are facing so that corrective actions can be taken in order to avoid
discrimination and represent equality at workplace.

Research methodology is considered as that part of an organisation which provide a basic
information as well as justification regarding the several methods, tools, approaches, strategies
etc. are used by investigator in order to perform investigation (Tuohy and et.al., 2013). This
support researcher in directing the investigation effectively by evaluating the method available

and choose the most suitable one. The type and methods used for the current investigation of
equality and diversity is mentioned below:
Research design: - The design with an investigation holds a crucial place within a study
as final outcome of investigation based on this. It decides the overall presentation of the study
and at the same time direct the manner in which it is to be presented (Taherdoost, H., 2016).
There are mainly three type of research design such as exploratory, experimental and descriptive.
All these are important but for this study descriptive research design is more suitable as it
support in performing a proper identification and providing a better explanation of investigation.
Research philosophy- The Interpretivism and positivism are considering to be two main
approaches used within research. For performing current study interpretivism philosophy will be
take into consideration as it helps in analysing the view point of several people effectively that
hep in providing better understanding from the available information (Walliman, 2017). Hence it
helps in reflecting different aspect of study which make investigation more effective.
Type of investigation: - For the effective execution of study effectively it is important for
the researcher to choose type of investigation effectively i.e. either qualitative or quantitative.
For performing this investigation effectively quantitative mean of investigation is taken into
consideration as it helps in explaining the gathered information in more effective manner by
providing accuracy of information in the form of numerical facts and figures (Mackey and Gass,
2015).
Research approach: In order to analyse the gathered information effectively the
investigator have to use research approach in accordance with the type of investigation (Kumar,
2019). The inductive and deductive are two main approaches used for performing an
investigation and to conduct this study deductive approach will be used which help in analysing
the numerical facts and figures that are gathered with the help of quantitative study.
Research strategy- In order to perform a study effectively researcher has to adopt a right
strategy which help them in collecting information effectively. For performing the study
effectively there are number of strategies that are mainly used by the researcher such as survey,
case study, questionnaire, interview, survey etc. In order to perform the investigation effectively

Data collection- It is defined as the number of sources for collecting information which
are used to conduct the study effectively such as primary and secondary data collection sources.
For performing the current investigation both primary as well as secondary sources will be taken
into consideration. The primary investigation helps in collecting fresh and new information over
the study area which is gathered with the help of questionnaire. On the other hand, secondary
information is one which support in collecting the information which is already available over
the current area of study which can be used to for developing basic understanding over topic
(Wiek and Lang, 2016). The secondary information will be gathered with the help of online
sources such as books, journals, articles etc. The main reason of choosing both the methods is
that secondary study support in getting an understanding regarding the nature of study so by
considering it as a base further study can be proceed with primary investigation to ensure best
possible outcome.

P3. Conduct primary and secondary research while considering cost, assess and ethical issues
Sampling- It is all about choosing the group of people that are mainly selected in order to
gather information regarding a particular study. This selection is mainly performed either using
probabilistic or non-probabilistic method. For the current study random sampling is used to
select respondents under probabilistic methods where sample size is 40 employees. The main
reason behind selecting the probabilistic sampling is that it helps in eliminating the chances of
bias behaviour while selecting respondents by providing equal chance of being selected.
Reliability and validity of study- For maintaining the validity and reliability within an
investigation the primary information is gathered using questionnaire. This is so because it help
in ensuring that the most reliable as well as authenticated data can be gathered directly with the
support of respondents which further help in maintaining the validity of information as direct
information is collected within any sort of modification from the people who have idea regarding
this areas of study.
Cost, access and ethical issue- For performing an investigation, researcher require fund
in order to arrange resources as well as getting access to several studies for collecting secondary
information. But in order to ensure the successful execution of study, researcher is required to
follow certain ethical principles so that the validity of study can be assured to the readers. There
are number of ethical principles which an investigator is required to follow while conducting a
study such as informed consent, confidentiality, anonymity etc.

from different background doesn’t get valued by other colleagues then it became difficult to
change perception of those employees and hence it act as a barrier.

in favour of training and development as with the help of this it become easier for making all the

employees belong to different background learn working co-ordinately which make it easier to
develop positive behaviour among them and allow them to accept one another culture.

Response: According to the view points provided by managers at TESCO, Diversity and
inclusion is part of TESCO. It is a prospective that is embedded in our values. There is treatment
of people with higher equality so that colleagues are willing to work with each other with high
levels of commitment. There is focus on building up of inclusive workplace so that it can lead to
positive impact at the workplace. The key highlights of some of the efforts leads to commitment
of management at TESCO to support BAME colleagues and ensuring that minority employees
are successfully represented at all levels.
Q2: How is the policy affecting your daily activities?
Response: Accordance with the response of managers at TESCO, they believe that the diverse
background of employees is leading towards higher creativity in the organisation. There is more
promotion of innovative ideas because of different background and mindset of employees
working in the organisation.
Q3: Do you feel that there is need of some suggestions for its improvement?
Response: Managers at TESCO have responded by saying that Yes, there is need of some
improvements for female representation for meeting their external commitments by focussing on
set of standards that have been developed by concerned regulatory authorities. TESCO plc can
also focus more on creation of a workforce that is reflecting a huge diversified workforce.

the stakeholders of TESCO such as employees, manager, investors, government etc. From

Sources of communicating outcomes: The investigator make uses of various methods
for communicating with stakeholders regarding the outcome of investigation performed over

TESCO. This mainly includes mails, online reports, written, presentation etc. that help the
investigator in representing the data in more meaningful manner.
Convincing arguments: The current study is based on determining several ways of
managing equality and diversity at workplace. With the help of this investigation it become
possible for the organisation to determine several different practices that can be adopted in
order to implement equality and diversity at workplace.

P6 Effectiveness of research methods in meeting objectives
My experience throughout the investigation was great as I learnt about the importance of
equality and diversity at workplace. Other than this it also helps me in developing my
understanding regarding several different ways through which the equality and diversity can be
maintained within an organisation. While performing this investigation I came across several
methods that are used for performing the investigation effectively. In order to perform this
investigation, I make use of quantitative method which support in gathering the information in
quantified manner which assure the accuracy as well as validity of data. Other than this, for
gathering information I use both the sources such as primary and secondary. Among them for
gathering primary information I make use of questionnaire so that larger amount of information
can be gathered in less possible time period. On other hand for collecting secondary information
I make use of literature review that supported me a lot in getting a basic information regarding
the topic over which I want to work by getting data from the study perform by several scholars
and critically evaluating that to get a gist about the study area.
P7. Alternative research methodology
In order to perform this investigation, the quantitative method is used which help in
presenting numerical facts and figures, but the main limitation of method is that it provide
consider data which sometimes results into lack of explanation about findings. Hence, in future I
will make use of qualitative method as it allow in presenting detailed explanation regarding the
view point of respondents to present information more clearly. Other than this questionnaire is

used as a method to gather information, but in future when I again get a chance to conduct study
I will use interview as an alternative method. It is so because this will help me in performing a
face to face interaction it respondent so that best possible data can be acquired.

CONCLUSION
From the above mentioned investigation, it can be state that equality and diversity within an
organisation plays a significant role by maintaining group of people in organisation that are
having different knowledge, skills and capabilities. These all support an organisation in
integrating the all the competencies and utilise it efficiently in order to deal with the challenges
that are being arises within the marketplace. The equality at workplace help in keeping the
employees satisfied at workplace and at the same time keep them motivated to perform work
effectively. On the other hand, diversity brings up several skills or knowledge all together which
can be used to brings innovative approaches to improve the offerings of an organisation. By
conducting investigation over this it has been identified that the majority of people believes that
by maintaining equality and diversity it become easier to retain the talent within the company for
longer duration. As when the employees are being treated equally and provide opportunities to
which they are capable it become easier to keep them, satisfied with the organisation and at the
same time keep them motivated toward their job role in order to achieve something by
performing well. Hence, this senses of development and motivation among employees support an
organisation in keeping them bind with them for longer duration.
Other than this by performing investigation it has been identified that the equality and
diversity within an organisation is consider to be very essential in achieving competitive edge.
This is so because a diversified workforce helps in generating diverse ideas to work over a
particular task which in turn help manager in adopting eth best possible alternative that results
into maximum outcome. Additionally, it also brings creativity in work as different people are
different in term of performing work or at the same time resolving the issues and it also support
in integrating the skills or knowledge which results into better actions to be taken. By adopting
equality and diversity practices an organisation get number of benefits such as good reputation of
the company, increasing the morale of employees and ensuring the regular flow of innovation.
But despite of all this there are number of challenges that an organisation mainly faces while
implementing equality and diversity at its workplace such as ineffective communication, lack of
acceptance and respect, ethnic and cultural difference which all restrict in implementation of
such policies or practices within the workplace. Hence, in order to deal with such issues an
organisation must focuses toward arranging regular training and development sessions for its

worker, form up a diversified workforces and try to improve the interaction by brining free flow
of communication at workplace.
