INTRODUCTION
Human Resource Management refers to a strategic approach which is adopted by the HR
department in order to make sure that the employees within an organization can remain satisfied
with their respective roles without problems and issues (Al-Jahwari and Budhwar, 2016). This
approach is required so that the HR department is able to ensure that the various types of goals
and objectives can be achieved in an effective manner. It is the role of the HR department to be
able to identify and solve the various types of problems and issues effectively and efficiently.
This report is based on Morrisons. It is a company which deals in various types of consumer
products and services. In this report, focus will be made on explanation of purpose and scope of
HRM, evaluation of effectiveness of its key elements. Additionally, analysis of various types of
factors will be made as a part of this assignment.
TASK 1
P1: Purpose and Functions of HRM
Overview- Morrisons is a company which deals in the retail sector and is one of the four
largest retailers in the United Kingdom. It is a company which provides quality products and
services to its customers and makes sure that they are satisfied.
Human Resource Management is a function which ensures that the different issues related to
employees are properly managed within an organization (What Is Human Resource
Management?, 2020). The HR department within a particular organization has different types of
purposes. In the context of Morrisons, the HR department has the following purpose-
 Employee recognition and engagement- It means recognizing the talent of the
employees within an organization and ensuring that they are given adequate recognition
(Bondarouk, Trulle and Valverde, 2016). Also, it is the purpose of HR department and
functions to ensure that the workers are engaged in an appropriate manner.
 Career development- It refers to identification of scope for the workers so that they are
able to grow further in their careers (Chowhan, Pries and Mann, 2017). In Morrisons, it is
the purpose of HR department and functions to ensure that the right opportunities are
provided to the workers so that they are able to grow in their careers in an effective
manner.
Functions of HRM-

 Planning- It is very important for the HR department of the organizations to be able to
plan in the right manner (Delery and Roumpi, 2017). Short-term, Medium-term and
Long-term plans are required to be made by the HR department of Morrisons so that they
are able to ensure that workers work in an effective manner by boosting up the
productivity.
 Organizing- For the HR department of organizations it is required that the various types
of activities in the organization are organized properly to ensure that the productivity
level of the employees is maintained (Grobelna and Marciszewska, 2016). In Morrisons,
it is crucial that the HR department effectively plays this role.
 Staffing- HR department of companies is required to ensure that it identifies the vacant
positions in the different departments and fill them by finding out the right candidates

is able to ensure that its staffing requirements are met. The role of this function is to

used by the companies. These are explained as follows-
Approaches of Recruitment-
Internal sources- These sources can be used in order to ensure that the existing
employees of the organization can be considered for higher roles when required (Jabbour and de
Sousa Jabbour, 2016). Talented employees with higher-order skills and abilities can be
considered for various vacant positions within the company. Transfer and Promotion are the
examples through recruitment can be done internally within the organization. In the context of
Morrisons, the use of this approach is required to ensure that proper recruitment can be done.
Strengths-
 Time-saving- When this approach is used it results in a lot of time saving. Thus for the
HR department in Morrisons it is quite advantageous.
 Savings of costs- By making the use of this approach the HR department can save on the

Weaknesses-

Approaches of selection-
Interview- In Interview method a face-to-face conversation is held between the
interviewer and the job applicant in which the interviewer is able to analyse the skills and
abilities of the applicant effectively to determine the suitability of the candidate for the job role
(Katou, 2017).
Strengths-
 Direct communication- With the use of this method, there is a direct communication
between an interviewer and the job applicant. Thus for the HR managers of Morrisons
this is an advantage.
 Proper evaluation of the candidate- When this method is used, it ensures that the
candidate is properly evaluated for the job role. Therefore, In Morrisons it offers an

Weaknesses-

of benefits to both the employers as well as employees. These are explained as follows-
Providing hygienic work conditions- When an organization provides them to the
workers it ensures that the morale and motivation of the employees remains high. Clean and

hygienic work conditions allow the workers to be able to concentrate more on the achievement
of their goals and objectives. This can benefit Morrisons as the productivity level of the workers
will increase. Also for the employers it creates a benefit because it makes sure that the
achievement of goals and objectives by the employees can be done because they are motivated to

Providing compensation on time- By providing compensation on time the organizations
can ensure that the employees are able to work better as their motivation will remains high. This

follow the employment laws which can make happy and increase trust of them to work more

order to provide the safety and security to employees who are working in organisation. This act
increases the morale and satisfaction level by providing them good health and security. This can

healthy and fits then only they can work in organisation effectively and give best outcomes so it
is important for management to follow regulation and create healthy environment. In context to

Data protection act 2018 – This is an act which is implemented by all organisation in

risk for people. Therefore, it is important for management to ensure their employees that their
personal data and information are safe and will help to retain them for long period. Morrison is

Workplace safety laws: This is also known as health and safety law which is required to
provide the good health and safety to workers (Shamim and et.al., 2016). As employees are the
main assets of organisation who needed safe workplace from where they can manage business
activities and make efforts to improve the workings. Morrisons is following the workplace safety
laws in which it protects employees from hazardous such as toxic chemicals, unsanitary,
electrical and mechanical risk, and other dangers. This also motivates workers to work and
