Labour Market3 The United Kingdom’s Labour Market Over the past few months, the UK labor marketing has been sending mixed signals. Last year for instance, the country exhibited a significant increase in the rate of employment and the number of jobs opportunities rose significantly. The number of people with gainful employment grew by 102,000, thereby setting a new record high in the country despite the market expectation that the level of employment would drop (Goodman, 2018). However, the inflation level and the wage growth remained significantly weak during the year. Specifically, the basic pay increased by 2.4 percent but still lags behind the rate of inflation in the country. Overall estimates from the Labour Force Survey indicate that between the last quarter of 2017 and the first quarter of this year, the number of people in work has risen significantly (Goodman, 2018). As a result, the number of unemployed individuals in the country has reduced also. Therefore, the UK labour market has significantly improved over the past few months. It is imperative to note that the rate of unemployment has gone down significantly over the last few months. As at March this year, the UK labour force had 32.34 million people who wereactivelyemployed(OfficeofNationalStatistics,2018)..Notably,thisfigureis approximately 197,000 people higher than those who had gainful employment last year, and more than 396,000 more than for the year before (Office of National Statistics, 2018). On the other hand, the level of joblessness in the country also reduced substantially over the past few months. Specifically, the rate of unemployment was estimated at 4.2 percent. This figure is approximately 0.4 percent less than the level of unemployment in the country in the previous
Labour Market4 year (Office of National Statistics, 2018). Additionally, the number of people between the age of 16 and 64 years who are jobless and not looking for work also decreased significantly Basically, the labor force of the country is either employed in the private sector or the public sector. As at December 2017, about 5.35 million workers were employed in the country’s public sector. Notably, this figure is a reduction from the December 2016 data by about 100,000 people (Office of National Statistics, 2018). Mainly, this fall can be attributed to the shift of English housing associations to the private sector. In retrospect, there were about 26.90 million individuals employed in the private sector as at December last year. Notably, this figure is bigger than the 2016 figure by 502,000 people (Office of National Statistics, 2018). Predominantly, the increase in private sector employees can also be attributed to the shift of the English housing associations to the private sector. The labour productivity of the UK workforce has also increased over the period. It is worth noting that the labour productivity is measured in terms of output per hour. Notably, the labour productivity of the UK workers was estimated to have increased by 0.7 percent between the third and the last quarter of 2017 (Office of National Statistics, 2018). In the same manner, the output per worker also grew by about 0.1 percent in the last two quarters of 2017 (Office of National Statistics, 2018). It is important to also point out that the labour productivity increase in both the manufacturing and service industries by 0.3 percent and 2.6 percent respectively from the previous quarter (Office of National Statistics, 2018). There are various forms of employment in the country comprising of part-time work, self-employment, temporary workers, agency work, and zero hours contract. Part time work makes up 26.2 percent of total employment in the country. On the other hand, the level of self-

On the other hand, temporary workers are about 1.6 million of the total number of employees in the UK. Furthermore, 2.8 percent of the people in the employees in the country are reported to be employed under zero-hours contract terms (Labour Market Outlook, 2018). Hospitality Industry Labor Market The hospitality industry of the UK is one of the largest industries in the country. Today, the industry has approximately 2.9 million workers across the country (The UK Hospitality, 2017). It is worth noting that the industry comprises of four main subsectors which are hotel, catering, restaurants, and even management. The hotel sub-industry has employed about 512,000 people, restaurant sub-industry has 1,493,000 employees, catering industry has hired about 887,000 workers and event management has about 28,000 personnel (The UK Hospitality, 2017). As at 2014, the country’s hospitality sector contributed £57 billion to the country’s GDP. It is imperative to note that a significant number of employees working in this sector are immigrants. As such, the UK hospitality sector has become heavily reliant on migrant labour. According to statistics, about 25 percent of the chefs, 75 percent of waiters and 37 percent of housekeepers are nationals of the European Union countries (The UK Hospitality, 2017).
