6 | P a g eExecutive SummaryCommunity Based Tourism is a type of tourism that takes economic, environmental, socio-cultural sustainability into account. It is managed and owned by the community, for the community. Community based tourism ensures tourists experience, awareness about local community, people, their culture, their way of life. Community based tourism considers the effects of economy, society, and environment. It is run by the community, own by the community and reared by the community. It can be generalized as by the community, of the community, for the community. Various study has been done previous time about effect of mass tourism but rare about community based tourism. This study indicates about community-based tourism economic relevance and often treated as alternative source of livelihood of the local people who are blessed with distinctive cultural and natural resources. This study has been done to identify the benefits and challenges of community based tourism in Birishiri, Netrokona, Bangladesh. Community based tourism is expected to provide equitable opportunity to the local on wealth, health, conserve local culture, empowerment of the local people, preserve environment. Community –based tourism provides clear idea to the tourists regarding the different touch of lifestyle, arts, history, heritage etc. Community-based tourism is not yet developed in Birishir, Netrokona but it has enormous opportunity to develop because this place has ancient history, unique culture, religious sites, natural beauty, and exceptional tribal culture, folk culture, fair & festivals. . The primary objective of the study is to identify the benefits of community-based tourism in Birishir, Netrokona, Bangladesh and then describe the challenges of community-based tourism. In order to achieve these objectives, both primary and secondary data were collected through qualitative (group discussion, interview and quantitative (CBT participant survey questionnaires) methods. The census technique was used to select Birishir, Netrokona, Bangladesh and 60 direct participants of CBT development. The quantitative data has been analyzed by statistical graph, chart, bar, diagram and qualitative data has been analyzed through discussion to validate the study. Both primary and secondary data sources are used to generate the report. This study reveals that challenges have been experienced whenever asking about community based tourism to the local people and the tourists. This study reveals that establishing community based tourism in Birtishri, Netrokona,is a challenging task

7 | P a g ebecause lack of basic elements are like infrastructure, attitude of the local people, accessibility, market, community capabilities, financial resources and management capacities. However number of benefits can be drawn from CBT in Birishi, Netrokona, Bangladesh in the area of equitable distribution of wealth, empowerment of the local people, conservation of cultural and natural environment, uphold the local’s cultural pride, sharing of culture, ensures the participation of the local people who remain deprived in the traditional mass tourism, ensures education and training to the local people. Community based tourism requires separate rules and regulations from government although government of Bangladesh has set up a law in 2010 which is yet to be established. This study identifies soma gaps between expectation and current situation of community-based tourism in Bangladesh like current performance of CBT projects accordingly with the mass tourism. This study also reveals that to establish community based tourism in Birishiri, Netrokona, Bangladesh is likely to be potentials because it has huge natural, cultural resources, unique location, unique lifestyle of the local people, and tribal culture of Garo anfd Khasia. Some challenges like attitude of the local people, accessibility, poor publicity, balance of power, infrastructure, regulatory body, economic viability, socio-political unrest to be solved to establish Birishiri as a community-based tourism destination. As a result, policy implications emerging from the results presented in this study are discussed and future strategies are suggested.
