INTRODUCTION
The electrical power system is operation which contain generation and distribution of
power. This energy can be generated from various methods such as, The raw material used in the
form of coal and diesel, later converted into electrical form of energy. The power system include
various devices to store the power such as motor, generator, transformer, conductor and circuit
house. Electricity is mainly generated from hydro thermal power plants which is one of the major
electricity producing unit. This study is based on uninterruptible power supply, this is a device
which stores energy for later use. In this report we will discuss UPS system (Aamir, Kalwar and
Mekhilef, 2016).
MAIN BODY
Uninterruptible power supply:
Uninterruptible power supply is a technology which allow electronic device to run even
after the lost of main power supply. The UPS system contain battery which start automatically
when main power cut off, this is very useful mainly in offices. If an employee is working on their
computer and power cut off, then UPS system take control of the power from their (Bukhari and
Ro, 2020). It is very important for the employee to keep saving their data until the arrival of main
power supply, they should not depend upon secondary power supply.
UPS in data centre: every uninterruptible power supply change alternating current (AC) into
direct current (DC) and save it for further use in inverter. Batteries in inverter save energy to use
in power failure, a bypass current circuit rectify incoming IT load. Double conversion or UPS is
standby design, there type is been used in implementing power in manufacturing units.
Types of uninterruptible power supply:
Voltage and frequency independent: this UPS system is double conversion because these
devices rectify both alternating current and direct current to maintain charge of the battery in the
inverter. The inverter rearrange alternating current to supply power to electronic devices. In this
system, when power supply fails the inverter runs the power supply but when the main power
restored, these devices rectify the direct current and recharge the inverter again. This type of
double conversion generators are mainly used in malls and retail stores which are large and need
continuous power supply.
Line interactive: line interactive provides power conditioning and power back up, this type of
technology is mainly used in areas where power failure is rare but power variation is very

common. These line interactive system is control various voltage fluctuation and control any
kind of power shortage with battery backup. This system break down power into 4-6 millisecond
and transfer power into battery backups which is later used in power problems.
Standby battery backups: standby battery are also called offline suppliers, offline UPS system
switch battery anomalies and control short power cut. This standby system protects control most
of the power spikes but it does not able to maintain long term power surges (Da Rosa and
Ordóñez, 2021). This system have less drain and provides more power backups. This device is
suitable for small offices and stores.
Advantage of uninterruptible power supply:
Uninterruptible power supply provides no delay in switching from main power supply to
secondary power supply.
UPS support better as compared to large generators.
Retailers can choose various types of UPS device according to their store size.
It is very easy for malls and retail shops to maintain these UPS device as compared to
generators which consume more diesel.
Some UPS device are silent which can be stored in within the store.
Disadvantage of uninterruptible power supply:
These UPS devices produce less energy and can not supply power to heavy device such
as central air conditioning in the store.
The maintenance of the UPS device is costly because stores have to change the battery
often.
Maintaining and installation of such UPS device are more complex as compared to
generator.
UPS system in retail stores:
Ongoing power crises have challenges the retail sector significantly, every minute of
power cut means huge loss in revenue. In today's advance technological world, power cut means
risk of hacking of the server. UPS device provide solution for such risk and handle multiple
power supply units at once. This device brings for power supply to all units of retails business
such as distribution centre, warehouse and front line store, UPS device prevent any kind of
power supply outrage that impact the logistic and retail breakdown.

Backup power for retail: supermarkets and retail stores are one of the most energy consuming
buildings where power supply must be continuous (Guerrero, Vicuna and Uceda, 2007).
Refrigeration of such retail stores consume half of the energy, many retail stores have now added
in store food corners for their customer. Power cut not only impact the inventory but it also
impacts the image of the store.
Competitive advantage: these UPS system can give competitive advantage to stores, many
retails stores do not have power back up system which lead to loss of their customer (Zhao,
2018). Vegetable retails stores need to have UPS power backup device because they have to
store perishable food products in their refrigerators. When retailer have UPS system and have
24/7 power supply in their store they have competitive advantage.
Importance of UPS system in retail stores and malls:
In many stores, doors are operated completely on electricity, when power cut off the
employees and customer are locked in the stores because of such electrically controlled doors
(Quaschning, 2016). These doors some times create huge problem in emergency, UPS system
plays an important role. These systems prevent staff and customer to stay safe in such uncertain
power cut moments. A retail stores and malls keep in mind, not to use electrical doors in
emergency way out. Some few electrical failure can create huge losses to the retail stores.
Terminals: retailer store operation mainly depends upon electrical equipments, when customer
reach to the final terminal of check out point, these electrical equipments have major roles in
check out that is smooth moment of electricity is must. To ensure customer do not find any kind
of problem in check out, retail stores use UPS system to maintain the flow and customer do not
have to wait long enough until the main power is back.
Shopping experience: to improve the shopping experience of the customer, retails stores use
UPS system. Customer do not like to wait in the line, and if the power goes off the wait become
longer and make customer abandon the shopping (Schavemaker and Van der Sluis, 2017). This is
serious problem faced by almost every retailer, they adopted the UPS system to make experience
of the customer better. The UPS system is plugs onto the wall and equipments connected to the
device.
Other facility: other than check out equipments, retail stores need UPS system is ATM's inside
the store. Customer faces many issues regarding the power cut of the ATMs which make them

dissatisfy, they feel frustrated when power goes off in middle of the transaction process. Retail
stores need to install USP system to all ATM inside the store.
Self serving terminal: self-serving terminals need to have UPS system for smooth running of
the customer paying experience. When self-serving terminal are provided to customer they feel
comfortable in controlling their order, but if the power cut happened customer tend to lose
control of their order and make them frustrated. In today's world, almost every retail stores and
malls have self-serving counter which allow customer to manage order by their own, ensure the
smooth process UPS system is been adopted by the stores which is best in modern power outrage
crises.
How UPS system work in retail stores:
There are four elements which ensure the continuous power supply in retail stores such as:
Rectifier: the rectifier convert the alternating current into direct current, later its recharge the
battery when main power come back. Rectifier depends upon the size of the UPS system, it can
accept large fluctuation of the power voltage and keep the devices safe which are connected.
UPS batteries: the battery plays the most important role in UPS system, they store electricity
and provide is when needed. The rectifier ensures that battery are charged, battery is connected
with one string of battery.
Inverter: the inverter ensure the smooth flow of current with the device connected to it, retail
store connect their main device to the inverter.
Bypass switch: this element of safeguard the power in case of failure in UPS system, the bypass
switch connect the main supply to all the device which are connected to the inverter. UPS system
is one of the best device.
CONCLUSION
In this report we have discussed electrical power system which provide us details about, how this
electricity is been produced. There are various ways in generating electricity energy such hydro
power plant, coal and natural gas power plant, solar energy, etc. after generating electrical
energy, the producer distribute the energy to all power supplying units. Later in this report we
have understood the uninterruptible power supply and its importance in retail sector. UPS system
is very useful device in power outrage.
