United States Navy Medical Service Corps (MSC) refers to a staff corp of the US
Navy that consists of officers who are engaged with the medical support duty. It is inclusive
of health care scientists along with researchers who make up around 60 % of the personnel
and the remaining 40 % is occupied by the health care administrators (Navy.com., 2018).
The US MSC came into existence after that of World War II at the time when various
professionals with different kind of background made contribution to that of the Navy
Medical Department. There were originally 251 officers who were commissioned in the year
1947 and they are called plank owners of the MSC. Among the plank owners there were 49
lieutenants, 47 ensigns, 30 lieutenant commander and that of 125 lieutenant. Rank pertaining
to Lieutenant Commander was the highest at this point of time till the later legislations
authorized the promotion to that of the Captain (Ziemke et al., 2015). Common
characteristics pertaining to the plank officer was that they had already served in that of the
Navy. Entry rank pertaining to MSC was on the basis of the length of the military service.
Navy Medical Service Corps came into being on the 4th of August 1947 with the help of an
act of United States Congress.
In the initial phase, it was comprised of four specialist section: Allied Science,
Administration, Optometry along with Pharmacy. In the present stage, it has got three
sections: Healthcare Administration, Clinical Care Provider and Healthcare Science. It
provides health care of the top order and it has got a dedicated group of the physicians and
the nurses who can serve the various needs of the service members along with their families.
The US Navy Medical Service Corps acts as the overseer of the medical facilities and they
act as the conductor pertaining to medical research (Russell, Figley & Robertson, 2015). It
comprises of multidisciplinary team in relation to administrative, clinical along with scientific
health care facility. The institution helps in ensuring that the health of the Navy along with
marine service member. The US Navy Medical Service Corps contributes to the humanitarian

relief effort and it helps in managing various kinds of projects. The Navy Medical Service
Corps works with a lot of unrivalled support and technology that can help in alleviating the
pain of a lot of people.
The US MSC consists of diverse group of the professionals that has got a single
mission. It embraces readiness along with wellness that can help in achieving their mission.
The active duty of the officers helps in meeting challenges that is dictated by readiness
requirement. They provide healthcare not only within the United States but in various parts of
the world. The MSC acts as a positive agent in relation to change and the aggressive
