AI Summary
This report, focusing on IT communication, examines the strategic use of graphics in training manuals. It begins by highlighting how graphics capture learner attention and facilitate comprehension by visually representing complex concepts. The report then details various types of graphics, including representational, mnemonic, organizational, relational, interpretive, decorative, and transformational graphics, explaining the purpose of each. The report also addresses the frequency of graphic usage, warning against over-designing and emphasizing the importance of using graphics judiciously to enhance learning without causing distraction. Finally, it specifies the types of graphics the author intends to use in their training manual, including mnemonics, decorative, and organizational graphics, and explains how each will contribute to the learning process. The report concludes by referencing relevant sources that support the discussed principles and findings.

1. Discuss the use of graphics in training manuals.
Graphics present in the training manuals help in grabbing the attention of the learners.
Graphics represent various topics and theories in a visually attractive manner. Graphical
representations help the learners to easily understand the main objectives of the training manual
and facilitate them to remember the main concepts which they have learnt. Simple charts and
pictures help the learners to easily link theories and concepts to the graphics and get a better
insight into the learning module by consuming less time.
2. What type of graphics should be used?
1. Representational graphics: These represent actual design such as forms and application
screens that the learners would encounter while carrying out practical tasks.
2. Mnemonics: These are pattern of ideas, letters and associations that help learners to
remember a concept.
3. Organizational graphics: These represent qualitative relations and factors that cannot
be expressed in terms of quantitative measures.
4. Relational graphics: These represent quantitative relationships by using graphs and
charts.
5. Interpretive graphics: These give an illustration of a principle, theory or cause-effect
relationships.
6. Decorative graphics: These are used for adding aesthetic appeal to the manual (Clark,
2014).

7. Transformational graphics: These represent changes in an object over space or time
(Jabbour, 2012).
3. How often should they be used?
Over-designing and overuse of graphics must be avoided. Too many graphics will
distract the learners and make the content look unorganized. Appropriate number of graphics
should be used for allowing the learners to make a connection with the content of the manual and
easily understand the learning material.
4. What graphics will you be using in your training manual?
I will be using mnemonics, decorative and organizational graphics in my training manual.
Decorative graphics will make the manual attractive, mnemonics will help the learners to get
factual information and organizational graphics will help them to effectively understand
qualitative relationships among the content. I will make use of relevant graphics in the training
manual.
