INTRODUCTION Referencing is termed to as providing or refereeing with citation of source of information or mentioning towards the source of writing. This will be used to tell reader about from where the ideas are derived and what are the sources that have been used in any assignment. Within this report description about citing and sourcing the correct referencing will be done with mentioning the steps for refereeing one particular text as well. Task 1 Description of citing the references and Sources correctly When the article or an information is been paraphrased or quoted in a research paper so there is a need to cite the original source of information. However if the references are not cited then reader will think that the information can be provided from the point of view and thoughts of a specific person. Adding proper citation to the written document or article can bring credibility to the work and also provides the evidences which mainly support the arguments mentioned in the article. Proper citation also provides the opportunities to further explore the topic of according to the individual thoughts of the person (Colander, 2018). It also provides the opportunities to explore the work which can be further supported by sources references and citations. There are several different types of citation style is used in various research fields. One of the most popular referencing style which is generally used in academic writing are MLA (Modern Language Association) and APA (American psychological Association) and Chicago styles. In order to determine the type of citation style needed for a particular research field, various steps are being considered. Step-1: Gathering information about the sources Determining the style used in citation: Different types of styles are preferred in different types of research fields (Goodall, 2015). It will be dependent on the supervisor that in order to determine the style used for project. Normally, full citation list is used at the end of the paper. This citation list may be called as a reference list, bibliography or a Cited Work according to the type of the citation used. Also, in-text citations are used which helps in identifying that material preceding the citation is not the original work of a work. Such in-text citations 1
may use the in-line and parenthetical footnote or endnote style to represent that the style of References. Identifying the author and title for each source: When a research paper is prepared then author and title must be used (Harder, 2017). In case, if there are more than one title is used then they must be used in the same order as they generally present in the by-line of an Article or in the same order as they appear in title page of the book. Publication information for each source: This helps in determining the date of publishingalongwiththenameandlocationofpublisher.Inordertocite references for academic journal, one may have to keep the information about edition, volume or issue. Publication information of the print source can be found at the back of the title page. Copy right information can be typically present on the same page (Karabulut, 2017). For URL's online Sources: Here, all the styles of citation commonly require a directURL,orpermalinkoranysourcethatwouldbefoundonline.As information on internet may be changed or updated, so most of the styles also provides last accessed date of the page. Step-2: Placing In-Text Citation Citing the reference immediately after paraphrasing and quoting the source material: Most of the citations, in-text citations generally cited at the end of the sentence.Thisisgenerallycomesbeforetheclosingpunctuationofthe sentence. Using the author date Parenthesis for citation in APA: In order to cite the material in the paraphrased material, last name of the author will be used in parenthesis at the end of the sentence along with the comma followed by the year of publishing (Li and et.al., 2018). Insertion of the footnotes for Chicago style in-style citations: This style can be termedasthefootnotewhichincludesthesameinformationasthefull bibliographic citations. Generally, elements of the citations can be separated using commas. 2
