Question 6
a)
Solution: Given data, 15 percent has been given as discount.
Let cost for 100 % without discount be X
So, after getting discount of 15 %, that is 85 % cost is £48
Thus, Total savings = 48/ (85 %) = 48*100/85 = £56.47
Answer: The total savings amounted is £53.64
b)
Solution: Given, number of meals = 6
Let us assume that Ola and her friends visited the restaurant be 2 times in 2 weeks.
Thus, Average = Total amount spent/ Total number
= [(48*2) + (56.47*4)] /6
= (96 + 225.88) / 6
= £53.64
Answer: The average savings amounted is £53.64

Question 8
Solution: Given data-
Number of men = 40 = x
Number of women = 60 = y
Total number of people= Number of men + Number of women
= (40+60) = 100
Also given, 3/5 of people said yes. Thus, X can be taken as number of people who said Yes.
So, X = 3/5 * 100
X = 60
Another given statement is as follows: 9/10 of Men said Yes;
Let number of men who said yes be 'a'. So, 9/10 of Men = 9/10 * x = a
Let number of women who said yes be 'b'. So, Fraction of Women = b
Hence, X = a + b
60 = 9/10 * x + b
60 = (9/10 * 40) + b
60 = 36 +b
or b = 60- 36
b = 24

TOTAL 20
Students who scored less than the mean mark have to retake the test. How many students have to
retake the test? You must show your working.
Solution: Given data:
Total number of students = 20
Formula to be used, mean = Sum of marks obtained/ Total number of students
= {(14*2) + (15*5) +(16*4) +(17*4) +(18*5)}/20
= {28+75+64+68+90}/20
= 325 / 20 = 16.25
From the table, it is evident that students scored 14,15 and 16 would re-take tests, as it is leass
than the mean of 16.25.

PART 2
A. Role of descriptive statistics in success of motion pictures
Descriptive statistics quantitatively explains the attributes or characteristics of gathered
information. This type of statistics summarises the sample instead of learning or making
interference regarding the sample or the variables. The performance of motion pictures depends
upon four different variables namely Opening gross sales (OGS), Total gross sales (TGS),
number of theatres (N) and number of weeks picture remained in top 60 (W). The application of
descriptive statistics on these variables specify the performance characteristics of motion picture.
This evaluation is essential as it helps motion picture industry to analyse the most successful and
worst performing pictures so that further strategies or actions can be taken. The key descriptive
statistics which can be used for enhancing success of industry are as follows:
Total:
The total values are one of the simplest ways to analyse the performance. The TGS
indicate the overall profit achieved by a particular motion picture. It helps industry to evaluate
that how much benefit it has achieved after eliminating the operational expenses. Though TGS
gives a bigger clarity of the performance the success can also be measured by having totals of
other variables. For instance, the total duration for which a picture remained in top 60 or in

theatre indicate that audience is giving a positive response towards the work and it will achieve
the success benchmark.
Mean:
This statistical description describes the average value received by different success
variables of motion pictures. This attribute helps industry to calculate the expected success rate
or profit values from the available records. Thus, it provides the expected future returns in a
quick and simpler manner. Similarly, the performance of each of the motion picture depends
upon above discussed four variables. Thus, by calculating the mean or average of every picture it
is possible for the industry to predict and calculate the most successful or the least successful
picture. The mean value of opening sales can also be used by the industry to compare its
performance by past records or to define targets for the future success.
Median:
The median describes the value which separates the upper and lower half values from a
specific data set. For instance, with median value motion picture can determine which pictures
have ranked above and below than a particular rated picture. For sales analysis when profits can
vary greatly for various pictures then median statistics does not skew by the influence of
extremely small or high values. Similarly, industry can make conclusion that if particular picture
has achieved success if it has total gross sales above median value of TGS. Thus, median values
inform that if industry has been able to achieve its sales or profit targets or not.
Variance:
The variance explains that how a specific value differs or vary from the average or
expected value. This attribute can describe that whether estimated sales records have been
achieved or not. With the help of variance, it is possible for the motion picture industry to
evaluate the difference between its budget and actual cost or the difference between expected and
real profit achieved. Thus, variance can also be employed by the industry to analyse that how
specific performance variables vary over specific period of time so that they can be improved.
Standard deviation:
Document Page
Standard deviations tell about the variability and volatility of performance of each of the
pictures produced by the industry. It can also be used to evaluate the overall performance
characteristic of particular picture. For instance, all success dependent variables affect the
success. Thus, standard deviation will describe the overall impact on determining success or
failure of each picture. It can also be used to find out the error margins. For instance, with this
approach motion picture industry can make recommendations that for enhancing total sales how
many numbers of theatres can be increased or how the opening collections of pictures influences
the success levels and standards.
Thus, by using above discussed statistical attributes the factors influencing success can be
determined and regulated.

From the above calculation it is observed that Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the
first high performance outlier. After considering its opening day sales and overall sales from all
outlets the mean sales records achieved by this picture are highest. Thus, it can be considered as
the best performer in all aspect and variables.
D. Relation between total gross sale and each of the other variable
The different success variables of motion picture industry influence each other. Thus,
their interrelations with TGS is described as below:
Relation between TGS and opening gross sales:
The OGS directly influences the TGS in a non-linear pattern. When OGS records for a
particular picture are high then TGS is also increased but the incremented value also depends
upon revenues collected from other days. The opening sales changes are directly reflected in
TGS. It is also possible that opening day sales of motion pictures can affect the overall TGS. For
instance, when OGS of any picture are extremely good then audiences are motivated to show
positive response towards picture. In such cases there is higher probability that in further days
the sales collection for the picture will be increased from the bulk OGS. Thus, in turn the TGS
will increase further. The OGS and TGS shares a dependency on each other. It is also possible

Document Page
that despite of low OGS the higher values of frequent days collection can give significant rise to
TGS.
TGS and number of theatres in which picture was screened:
TGS variable is used to determine the overall success of picture. The motion picture
industry provides the screening of its pictures in various theatres. The total value of TGS can be
considered as the sum of gross sales collected from every theatre. However, it is not assured that
increased number of theatres will guarantee the increase in TGS. It is possible that there may be
great variation in the sales profits of every theatre thus they will have a non-uniform impact on
TGS. The theatres which have excellence sales and performance records usually generate major
contribution to the TGS. Thus, motion picture industry ensure that its pictures are screened
among top theatres as well as in majority of theatres so that more audience can view the picture
and success rate as well as TGS is enhanced.
Dependency between TGS and number of weeks (W) for which the picture sustained its
position in top 60:
It is always matter of pride for motion picture industry when its picture holds position in
top 60 for long duration. It shows that picture is greatly appreciated by the people and great
response is received from them. However, TGS and W are completely dependent upon each
other. The pictures which have record breaking TGS considered to be successful and can easily
sustain the place in top 60 for a greater number of weeks. Thus, W can be increased if TGS is
higher. Similarly, when a picture continues to be in top 60 ranking for good value of W then
more people are inspired to watch the picture and increase the TGS.
These interdependencies between all variables is essential to analyse. This analysis helps motion
pictures to improve their strategies and profitability. It also demonstrates that how other variables
can improve the TGS of the pictures.
E. Scatter diagram reflecting relation between total and opening weekend gross sales
The total gross sales (TGS) and opening gross sales (OGS) are closely related to each
other and their relation can be considered to have non-linear and positive correlation. Though
higher values of OGS will definitely increase the TGS value but the overall increment in TGS
also depends upon the sales of picture in consecutive days. Thus, it can be said that TGS not only
Document Page
depends on only OGS instead it is calculated by adding OGS with sales collection in other days.
It shows that there exists a non-linear relation between both of these variables which is
controlled by third variable. However, it is definite that whenever OGS are increased there will
be an increment in TGS. It demonstrates that there is positive correlation which means that
positive change in one quantity will be reflected in another variable as well.
The positive and non-linear relation between TGS and OGS is represented by above scatter
diagram.
