INTRODUCTION
Family that refers to group of people who are related to each other, plays very important
role for individuals as well as for society. This study will discuss role of family according to
functionalism perspective of sociology. Functionalism perspective of sociology considers society
as a complex system whose parts work together to promote solidarity and stability (Ruszkowski,
2019). Functionalism perspective consider that all aspects of society including different
institutions of society, role and norms serve a purpose and all these are indispensable for the long
term survival of society.

Role of Family
Socializes children- Functionalism perspective of sociology considers society as a whole system
and in terms of function it constitutes elements such as norms, customs, traditions and institution.
As per this perspective, family plays very important role in which family socializes their
children. This means that in order to integrate and involve children in society, it is important that
they socialise and socialization is done through learning and teaching norms, values and
traditions of society (Muñoz-Bullon, Sanchez-Bueno and Suárez-González, 2018). Family teach
children how to socialise so that they can become part of society and work together with other
parts of the society. Socialization is concerned with at of participating in social activities and
social activities are important part of social functioning. Socialization of children also involve
making children behave in a certain way that they are accepted by society. This enables them to
become a member of society who are well aware with social norms and rules of participating in
social functioning.
Emotional and practical support for its members- As per functionalism perspective, parts of
society work together to promote solidarity and stability. In order to do so, it is very important
that members of society get adequate emotional and practical support to members. Family plays
very important role in providing emotional and practical support to members of society so that
they can work together and fulfil their role in society. In this different members of family
provide emotional and practical support to each other, for well-being of everyone in family and
for well-being of family in society. Emotional support includes offering encouragement,
compassion and reassurance to member of family and society. Practical support includes
supporting or helping someone with specific tasks and helping them to carry out action.
