Vanuatu is an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean that enjoys the status of a nation. The

Introduction
Vanuatu is an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean that enjoys the status of a nation.
The origin of the archipelago is a volcanic origin. The archipelago is situated almost 1750
kilometers from the northern part of the mainland of Australia on the eastern side (Dfat.gov.au
2018). The population of the country is a very low amount of 272459 people as reported by the
census of 2016 (Dinnen and Walton 2016). The economy of the country is however dependent
on the huge amount of the financial inflow that arrives to the country with the huge amount of
the foreign tourists who have been visiting the area. The other sources of income that might help
the sustenance of the lives of the people in the island country is the sale of the various trinkets
and souvenirs that are collected by the various foreign tourists who have been visiting the area
(Youtube.com 2018). The following report attempts an analysis of the various issues that are
faced by the residents of the country in terms of the ethics and the governance, the various
ethical actions that might have been undertaken by PO Cruises. The report further proceeds to
attempt a discussion on the various authorities that might take part in the rectification of the
various issues that are faced by the concerned islanders and the areas that might need the
intervention of the government. The report nears its conclusion with the recommendations that
might help in the avoidance of the similar situations in the future.
Governance and ethical issues
The island country of the Pacific has been reported to have been facing issues that pertain
to the governance that is existent within the country. The major issues that might pose a problem
for the local islanders refer to those that deal with the corruption of the various officials wo have
been holding high posts within the governing body. The other problem that has proved to be a
major issue deals with the fact that the funds that should have been spent for the betterment and

the improvement of the residents of the archipelago are reportedly being spent for the betterment
of the various officials who have been appointed for the better governance of the nation. The
residents of the Pentecost island, however, have taken up the governance activities in their own
hands (Taylor 2013). They have been attempting to rebuild the nation and thereby create more
scope for the employment of the various residents of the island.
The major ethical issue that is being faced by the residents of the nation in discussion,
Vanuatu, is the matter that pertains to the construction of the toilets and the other matters that
address the need for the proper sanitation channels that have been established within the various
areas that are mostly visited by the cruises that help in the transportation of the various foreign
tourists to and from the island (Vnso.gov.vu 2018). The amenities that are avail exclusively to
the tourists include the basic amenities like the use of the toilets and the water channels that are
needed for the proper sanitation of the given areas. The other factor that has posed to be an
ethical challenge in the lives of the residents of Vanuatu is the high amount of commodification
of the lives of the islanders.
Ethical action on the part of PO Cruises
The PO Cruises is the major cruise operator that is responsible for carrying the majority
of the foreign visitors to the island (Pocruises.com 2018). The concerned management of the
cruise operator in discussion, PO Cruises, might be considered to be responsible as well as
influential in the matters that pertain to the implementation of the various ethical practices that
might need to be practiced within the various communities that exist within the island nation in
discussion, Vanuatu. The cruise operator might help in the enhancement of the employment
chances that might be present within the various communities that reside on the islands wherein
the cruises of the company visit for the purpose of embarkment and the disembarkment of the

tourists (Forsyth 2015). The cruise operator might enter into legal contracts with the locals on
these islands in order to facilitate the sightseeing activities of the concerned visitors who have

better livelihood that needs to be maintained by the local residents of the island.
Responsible authorities for rectifying issues
The various ethical and the governance issues that are faced by the islanders might
require the intervention of the various authorities that might affect the current living conditions
of the islanders. The major changes that needs to be brought about in the archipelago depends on
the involvements and the initiatives that are undertaken by the residents of the area. The major
changes pertain to the installation of the local governments in the islands that are a part of the
archipelago (Vnso.gov.vu 2018). This might help in the matters that pertain to the shift of the
dependency of the reliance on the central governmental body operative from Port Villa. The
Pentecost islanders have been known for introducing the concept of the local governments within
the area that might help them to keep the money laundering in check.
The other issue that needs to be rectified refer to the issue of the public health and the
healthy living conditions within the country. The government might have to bring about a
rectification in the matters that pertain to the sanitation measures that exist within the country.
This might refer to the installation of the proper toilets that might be used by the local residents.
This might help in the improvement of the living conditions of the residents of the archipelago
(Sbs.com.au 2018). The Australian government might also help in bringing about the various
changes that are needed within the present governmental system that exists at Vanuatu. The
islanders might also benefit from the intervention of the privatized cruise operator that might

Governmental intervention
The issues that have been faced by the residents of Vanuatu could have been avoided
through the timely intervention of the government of the country. The intervention of the country
might have helped in the matters that pertain to maintaining of the public health system of the
country with a major focus on the sanitation of the country. The government should also have
looked into the matters that deal with the availability of the clean and drinkable water to the
locals of the island (Dfat.gov.au 2018). The Vanuatu government should also have looked into
the matters that deal with the installation of electricity within every household of the island
thereby leading to the better living conditions of the islanders who have been settled in the
archipelago (Nimbtik 2017). The government of Vanuatu should also have looked into the
matters that deal with the facilities of education and other basic amenities that are made available
to the residents of the island nation.
The Australian government might also have helped in the improvement of the conditions
that are existent within the country. These measures might have included the intervention of the
Australian government in the internal matters of Vanuatu in order to curb down the increasing
corruption among the various members of the governing bodies of the island nation. This might
have also curbed the money laundering that had been taking place in the country (Rose-
Ackerman and Palifka 2016). The Australian government could also have put a stop to the aids
that it had been extending to Vanuatu in order to create a pressure on the government to keep a
check on the corruption that has been going on in the country.

The concerned issues that have been discussed in the above section might be avoided by
the implementation of the measures that might help in the improvement of the situation. The
government of Vanuatu might encourage the residents of the country to create as well as
maintain the locally situated governmental bodies. These local governmental bodies might be
held responsible for the betterment of the lifestyle of the residents of the concerned locality. The
government might also provide encouragement to the local residents to get involved in the
numerous developments in the indigenous businesses which might help them in the development
of the economy of the country as well as the personal upliftment of the concerned individual.
The residents of the nation might also be encouraged to take part in the multitude of self-reliant
activities. This might also help in bringing about a clarity within the economic factors of the
country and thus help in the matters that pertain to the money laundering that has been taking
place in Vanuatu.
Conclusion
The island country of the Pacific, Vanuatu, has been reported to have been facing issues
that pertain to the governance that is existent within the country. The concerned issues that have
been discussed in the above section might be avoided by the implementation of the measures that
