VENUE ANALYSIS OF LIDO AQUATIC CENTRE3
1.0 Introduction
The Lido Aquatic Centre is located at 50 Park Road, West End, Palmerston North,
replacing the Palmerston North Municipal Baths in 1966. The Lido Aquatic Centre is situated
on 10 acres of prime residential land that was previously owned by the Awatapu Golf Club
between 1937 – 1964 (Rapson, 2014).
The name Lido originates from a resort town in Italy famous for its beach bathing,
(Mays, 2016), initial planning to build the Lido Aquatic Centre started in 1959, fundraising
and full planning commenced in 1964, funding was achieved by a Golden Kiwi grant and
public subscriptions, construction itself commenced on the 23rd January 1965, (Heritage,
2020), co-ordinated by the Palmerston North City Council, City Engineer’s Department.
The Lido Aquatic Centre was officially opened on the 15th Nov 1966, and the Lido
Aquatic Centre was primarily designed for family fun, in 2002 the Lido commenced
redevelopment increasing the number of facilities and services, (Management, 2020a), Glen
Finlayson, Palmerston North city council, parks officer confirms, in 2018/19 the Lido
achieved a total of 379,376 users, (Email correspondence, 2020).
Lyden Noakes, Lido facility manager confirms, the outdoor activities are seasonal,
and during the winter period the outside areas are seldomly used, this causes the attendance
of users to decline, (Personal Communication, 2020).
Lyden Noakes also states, the 22 million litre complex and it is nine bodies of water
are kept at around 25 degrees and filtered by a DE or diatomaceous earth system with pumps
that circulate 383,000 litres through the leisure pools every hour (Personal Communication,
2020).
