Reflection Report on Violation of Professional Rules in Healthcare

INTRODUCTION
This reflection report is about an incident which as discussed in the lecture. This incident
is based on the culture which might create problem for a person. The report is based on an
incident which took place in a hospital where the nurse committed a mistake. For the mistake
there are various cases filed for her name. It is because the nurse was not following the orders of
the management which is beneficial for everyone. For the same the nurse filled counter cases in
various tribunal but the result was not desired by the nurse. For the purpose of writing the
reflective report Gibbs Reflective cycle has been used. Gibbs reflective cycle refers the model
which helps the person learn from his experience. It has a framework based on which
experiences can be expressed. It helps to learn as well as plan from various incidents (Adeani,
Febriani, and Syafryadin, 2020).
Gibbs Reflective Cycle
Description
I was in a seminar where a case was discussed which is about violation of professional
rules. This incident is about a nurse who used to advice his patients that they should read bible,
sing the prayers and various other things which was related to her religion. It was described by
various patients that the nurse was not doing the work she was allotted instead she starts talking
about the religious things which can help to cure cancer. This was not acceptable to various
patients as they were not getting the proper care from the nurse. This lead to filing of various
cases which were against the nurse but the main factor in these cases was that the nurse was not
fulfilling her professional duties. The incident took place in the Darent Valley Hospital which is
in Dartford.
I learnt from this case that it is necessary to fulfil the professional duties as it is
established for the welfare of the patients. From the case I learned that the regulatory framework
which is applicable on the nursing sector is Nursing and Midwifery Council which establish
various rules for the nurses. It is necessary that the nurses fulfil those rules for the faster recovery
of the patients. This incident helped me to understand that it is good that a person follow its
religion, but it is not right to implement the religion in the workplace. It is because sometimes it
creates problem for the other people. The current incident helped me to understand that there are
various types of culture are present in an organization which help to work for the benefit of the
organization. I learnt from the incident that following professional rules and regulations are most
important while a person is in his workplace.
This incident is important in the health and social care profession as the life of a person is
dependent on the person who is following the profession. It helped me to develop various skills
which will be necessary in the professional period. These skills can be communication skills,
empathy, work ethic and positive attitude. Positive attitude is developed because the nurse who is
in the incident was positive that in some court she will win the case which lead to filing of
various cases by the nurse for her rights.
Feelings
During the experience of this case I felt like the nurse should not always motivate her
patients to do prayers and read bible. It is because it is not necessary the patient will recover
because of the prayers, as treatment is also necessary. For the recovery of a patient from cancer
both the treatment as well as prayers are necessary. If we take into consideration the professional
rules of a nurse, it is not in their roles of duties as it is a basic thing which every person does in a

difficult situation. Many people in the incident were feeling like it is not necessary to say prayers
ever time as the nurse is not even examining the progress of the patients. It is against the rights of
the patients as they were not getting the proper care which is essential for recovering from a
disease like cancer (Ingham-Broomfield, 2021).
Cancer is a disease which normally does not recover easily, its treatment is necessary it is
one of those disease if left untreated it will be risky for the patients. I learnt from the incident that
it is not good for a person to every time follow his own culture as professional values are also
important in the workplace. The nurse should ensure that she checks the patients the time she
visits them, after that she can give advice which is related to culture or any religion. It is learnt
from this incident it is not beneficial for the person when they continuously commit the same
mistake.
It is because the mistake which is done 1st time and its impact is negative, then it should
not be committed again in the future. I think that the what the nurse recommend is not wrong for
the patients but the manner in which the nurse is conducting the same is not correct. As the
professional values of a nurse, she should examine the patients and fulfil its duties and after that
she can provide the advice which is related to the culture of the person. In this I learned that the
values which are necessary for a nurse to have is compassion, respect for the person and its
culture and ethical practice. I learnt that it is most essential for a person to have knowledge of
ethical practice so that the nurse can do her work which is important for the person to consists.
Evaluation
From the incident I evaluated that the practice of the nurse is not according to the values
which are necessary in the medical field. It is because the patient who are admitted in the
hospital needs treatment and care which is important for the person to get cured of his disease. In
the situation the person is suffering from the problems, if the nurse advice them to read bible or
sing prayer will implement a negative effect on the person. It is because the person might feel
like that the treatment of the hospital is not good because of which the nurse is giving the advice
of prayers. It will eventually affect the image of the hospital as the nurse is not treating their
patients properly.
The act of the nurse will eventually affect the health of the patient as they are not getting
proper care for their health. This was a bad experience in the incident as the nurse was not
following the instruction of their management which is not good for the profession of a nurse. I
learnt from this situation that I should always follow the instruction of the management as it is
necessary for carrying out our duties required in the organization. There were various patients of
the hospital who filed the report for the behaviour of the nurse (Hargreaves, and Page, 2013).
I learnt that the report was filed mainly because the violation of the rules which were
applicable on the nurse. It is necessary for an employee to fulfil his duties which are provided to
them as it beneficial for all the parties. The case which was filled was a disadvantage for the
nurse. I learnt to develop the skills of following the rules laid by the professors in efficient
manner. It is because it will help in the future when I will have to follow the rules. The rules not
followed in the professional life will cause various problem for the person as it will affect the
health of the patients admitted in the hospital. I learnt from the incident that I should not do the
things which the nurse of the hospital did as it will not be good for the career for the person. I
should develop the skills of analysing the situation and then provide the recommendation
required for the other person.

Analysis
It is analysed from the incident that there main thing which gone wrong in the incident is
that the recommendation provided by the nurse was not suitable for the patients. This is because
the nurse did not examine the patients when she visited the patients during her round. The nurse
was not able to do the task provided to her instead she was doing the things which is mentioned
in her religion which was not good for the patients. It is because the patients were not interested
in getting the advice of prayers and reading the bible.
They wanted to get the best treatment which can be provided by the hospitals. The
hospital is a place where the patients only visit when they think that they can get the best
treatment which will help them to cure their disease and get healthy. The patients were in need of
that the condition can be analysed whenever the nurse visit, so they can get some sort of relief
that they are recovering. The patients were not agreeing with the attitude of the nurse. I learnt
from this that satisfaction of the customer will depend upon the services which are provided to
them by the staff of the organization. In the services they will analyse the needs are met or not
(Jasper, 2013).
I will develop the skills of understanding the needs of the customers so that I can provide
them with good quality of services. By developing this skill I will ensure that the patients will
want to visit the hospital whenever he will face any difficulty or need any sort of consultation. I
will try to learn various techniques with the help of which I can analyse the needs of the patients.
It will ensure that I can get success in my career as well as improve the image of the
organization. There are various skills mentioned in the previous stages which will need
development and will help in improving the image of myself. It will eventually help the
organizations image which will increase the list of patients. By developing the required skills I
can ensure that I will get the required job position in the same organization or in a different
organization. It is learnt that it is not necessary that our perception is correct in every situation.
Conclusion
From this incident I learnt that following our own values in the workplace is not suitable
for the growth of our own and organization. As sometimes it is necessary for follow the
professional values required in a workplace. It is because the values and rules of the workplace is
established for the benefit of its patients. Hospital is a place where rules are necessary to be
followed as the life of a person is dependent on the following of the rules. It can result into
various bad outcome when the rules are not followed properly by the staff of the hospital. The
impact which the negligence will provide are not good for the patients. This situation can be
converted into a positive situation when the nurse will follow the rules of examining the patients
in their visiting time.
The advice can be provided after the examination, as it is necessary to have regular
examination on the patients as their recovery report is essential for the documents of the hospital.
The report will also help the doctor while making the decision of further treatment, as they can
analyse the effect of the previous treatment on their patients. By doing the situation in correct
manner the recovery rate of patients can be increased. This will be beneficial for the patients as
well as the hospitals. The skills I need to develop in a situation like this are establishing work
ethics, communication skills, professionalism and the attitude.
As this will help the nurses to provide high quality of services to their patients, as well as
it will improve the recovery rate (Monrouxe, and Rees, 2017). These skills will help me to
improve my career in the medical field as the customer will want to come to the hospital again

when consultation is needed for any problem. It will provide me some sort of relief when the
patients will recover from their disease in efficient manner. I could have done the work which is
provided by the management as the rules set by the management is beneficial for the patients of
the hospital. The advice which is related to the culture of the will be given when it is necessary
for the patient to provide them some sort of positive feeling. But this will not be a regular
practice as it will affect the mindset of the patients as the condition will be same as the nurse.
Action Plan
If I had to the same thing as the nurse did then I would have done it differently. As I
would have first examined the patients are recorded the progress made the patients with the help
of treatment. Then if the time allotted for a patient is remaining I will try of form a conversation
with the patient to analyse his mindset. After analysing the mindset if I feel like the patients has a
negative mindset and need positive things for the further recovery process then I will suggest
him to read his own holy book. As it is not necessary the patients is Christian and is interested in
reading the religious book.
Also, it is not necessary that the advice regarding religion is necessary for the patient if
he does not believe in good. Here I will ensure that I will not advice the patients regarding the
religious factors to ensure their satisfaction. It should be ensured that the patients feel satisfied
with the services provided to them. The required skills as discussed in the above steps can be
achieved by practising and acknowledging it during the examination process. The skills will be
developed by establishing goals which will be beneficial for establishing those skills.
Those skills will need time to get developed as these are the important skills which will
help to develop the career. I might need training for some skills as these skills can be difficult to
establish because of its nature. As professionalism cannot be established easily as different
values are needed in the different sectors. I can ensure that I will act differently in the next time
by making sure that I set target for myself that the document of patients should be filled before
the completion of round time. I can establish some sort of reward for myself if I do not talk about
religion with patients. These rewards should be those which I need in any condition. I can make
sure that I accept the mistake I committed, as it will help me to ensure that I will not repeat the
same mistake twice. Accepting the mistake helps me to recognize the things which I was doing
in wrong manner. I should provide myself with some sort of tools which will remind me not to
talk about religion.
SMART GOALS
The SMART goals are framed, to attain best long term targets within field of clinical nursing
for strengthening rapport and medical learnings as per my specific determined goals. Getting
time based, and measurable Clinical nurse should be aware about best working strategies,
clinical nursing therapies and medication knowledge related to determined improvement
among patients. Specific: I aim to become professional clinical nurse, with experience of handling cancer
patients and attending delivery of best healthcare services. I aim to attend my target in
specific period of 6 months, and extensively collaborate towards taking best trainings

form extensive competitive professional experts. I also aim to imperatively improvise
dynamic growth strategies, generate extensive care goals among patients having cancer.
Specific benchmark attainment enables to develop optimal new learning, accurately form
authentic benchmarks and generate longer term engagement priorities competitively. Measurable: My target and future goal, is accurate and measurable within period of 6
months, as I aim to achieve it with precise awareness and determined growth criteria.
This will enable me to get trainings about best clinical nursing strategies, therapies and
treatments to be given to patients for overcoming illness. Goals will be measured by
keeping check on overall performance paradigms by working as clinical nurse, and also
primitively adopting to long term targets diversely I will get timely feedbacks from
seniors, and also determine accurate parameters for representing extensive motivation
and generate extended specific operational domains. Attainable: The target will be attained by learning from practical advanced online
courses, learning materials based on advanced nursing standards as it enables to
accurately form improved services. I also progressively aim to gain expertise, clinical
nursing experience to leverage faster determined operative goals diversely. My
professional experts in clinical nursing field will enable me to gain best learning,
extensively form authentic engagement about professional benchmarks. Realistic: My goal are intricately realistic, which will enable me to determine extensive
improvement among professional benchmarks and attain extended care parameters within
long term domains. The realistic standards are also authentic, to develop me primitively
active for serving my best to all cancer patients. Realistic goals further also motivate to
expand competitive targets for leveraging untapped paradigms, and also be aware about
extensive determined work based goals. Time target: The time target is 6 months, which will enable me to develop specific new
learning goals for accurate attainment of goal as clinical nurse. It will further also
improvise extensive determined long term pace, based on specific learning pace for
progression in my career. It will enable me to develop professional goals, accurate
technical determined learnings based on primitive stringent paradigms for developed
academic and professional benchmarks. The clinical nurses should be also aware about
extended determined long term goals.

For further improvising optimal care, and new learnings based on primitive long term
development there is further pace evolved to critically evolve on primitive generation of
authentic working domains.
