Creation of Host Groups, Libraries, Storage, Networks and Private Cloud in Virtual Machine Manager

This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to create host groups, libraries, storage, networks and private cloud in Virtual Machine Manager. It also explains how to increase capacity and delegate roles to IT specialists.

Creation of Host Groups in Virtual Machine Manager.
The creation of host group structure in the Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) will depend on the
goals that have been aligned by the given organization. The following is the procedure for
creating a host group (Microsoft, 2016).
i. The first step is opening the fabric workspace
ii. In the pane or tab of fabric the servers will be needed to be expanded and perform the
following.
All-hosts need be right-clicked and the host-group clicked.
Click all hosts and the folder tab just click on the host group.
The Virtual Machine Manager will creates a new host group which has a name New
Host group when the group name will be highlighted.
iii. Then type the desired name and press Enter.
iv. The same steps should be repeated for the rest of the structures of the host group.
Creation of a library
When one wants to create a library there are some steps that need to be followed. In this concept
the consideration will be based on the VMware platform where one can create the library content
in the vSphere clients in the web and populating it with the given templates, thus they are applied
in deploying the virtual machines or the virtual apps in the given virtual environment. The
following procedure will be used in creating such (VmWAre, 2018).
i. In the web client navigator of the vSphere choose the vCenter inventory lists and
select content libraries
ii. Click the tab named objects.
iii. Create a new library by clicking the icon named “create a new library”
iv. Enter name of the library and in the notes in the available text box give a description
of the libraries and then click next.
v. Lastly but not least select the content libraries that need to be created.
vi. Click next
vii. Choose the datastore.
viii. Click finish after reviewing the information and if it is ready.

Creation of the storage in the Virtual Machine Manager
The information workflow has been automated in many ways. The following procedure has been
used to give a description on the discovery of the workflow, classification, creation as well as
assigning the storage with application of a given Virtual Machine Manager (microsoft, 2016).
i. Discovering the Storage from VMM console and start by adding the storage devices
from the wizard.
ii. Classify the storage
iii. Selection of the method that will be used in creation of the logical units.
iv. The next step is the provision of the storages
v. Allocating the storage to a given host group.
vi. Assigning the storage to the given hosts and much more the available clusters.
Creation of Networks
There are two ways through which the network in the VMM can be created. The two ways are
the manual and the automatic way (Petersen, 2017).
Automatic creation of a logical network.
i. Click the settings pane and in the general tab double click on the network settings.
ii. Configure all the logical network matching all the setting required.
Manually creation of the logical Network.
i. In the fabric pane click home and in the show tab click the fabric resources by
expanding the networking tab and clicking the logical networks, select the home tab
and create the logical network.
ii. Name the specified name and the description in the creation of logical network
wizard tab.
iii. Specify what need to be isolated by the VM networks with all the associated logical
networks.
iv. In the network site add all the network sites to the logical network

The IT specialist can do what is called delegation by applying the concept of the group host
structure. There are some settings and the resources which are always assigned to the host group
level. Some of these are the rules of custom placement, settings for the host reserve, dynamic
optimization and the power of the power optimization settings among others. It is by default the
child group host will inherit all the settings that are acquired by the mother host group.
The IT specialist can assign the host groups to the administrator who is delegated and the Read
only admin user roles in scoping the roles of the users to the given specific host groups. The
members of the user roles can be able to view and manage all the resources of fabric and with
which they are assigned to them at that specific level. The IT specialist can create a private cloud
from all the available resources in the hosted groups. In creating the Private cloud the IT
specialist will have to select the host group that he or she feels will be needed to be part of the
private cloud. IT specialist will then allocate all or the defined and specified resources that will
be needed to be applied in his absence from the host group that has been selected to the private
cloud. In this concept the method is the use of the placement rule. Virtual Machine Manager will
automatically identify all the most suitable hosts to which one can use when deploying the
virtual machines. However, the IT specialist can specify all the custom placement rules. It is by
default, that the host group will the use the placement settings from the parent host group (Ms,
2016).
The following are some of the major steps for creation of a private cloud in the virtual machine
manager 2012.
1. Click on the home tab and select on the create cloud pane.

2. After selection of the create cloud type the name of the private cloud giving the
description of what it will entail.
3. Assigning of all the host groups that are all available for the created host group. The
created host group will be sorted in the fabric
4. Assigning of the logical networks that one created in the fabric. The networks will be
available in the created private cloud.

5. If one is lucky in the process then one can have a load balancer and which must be
configured in the fabric as they are assigned in the process.
6. The VIP profiles will also be created in the fabric.

7. In this area the storage that was defined in the fabric will be available now in the cloud in
this step as shown in the figure below.
8. The next step is assigning the cloud with all the library resources that are used when
doing the deployment of the services.

9. Defining the cloud magic by configuring the elasticity where the properties can be
navigated for the already created private clouds.
10. Selection of all the Hypervisors that has been used in defining the created private cloud
such as the ESX, Xen and the Hyper-V.
11. At this juncture on have succeeded in creation of the private cloud.

Increasing the capacity will depend on the VMM being used. The main feature of any private
cloud is the ability to be able to control the capacity.

The screen above shows how the capacity increment of the private cloud is done. In the case
above with relation to private cloud it is by default that there is full resources capacity if one
many prefer that. One may opt to change the values with relation to what is good and desires
them. There are a number of machines that has been setted up some limits of the VM numbers,
available Virtual machines and the storage. In configuring the increment one will need to
configure the all the required needs and click next. In the capability profile in the left menu tab at
the bottom select the host’s profiles that will be applied. There are three profiles that by default
will be created and also new one maybe added.
