Task 1
1.1 Discuss the overlap of visitor
attractions in relation to particular
types of attraction.
A place where tourists visit for the natural or
cultural value of exhibit, historical
importance or for leisure and adventure is
called a tourist attraction. Tourist attractions
can be of various types like natural
attractions, amusement attractions themed
for entertainment of the tourist or of
historical significance. Increasing number of
tourist attractions will help increase the
scope of tourism in Britain (Benur and
Bramwell, 2015).
Types of tourist attractions
There are many different types of tourist’s
attraction, which can be classified through
various parameters. The four main
attractions which are found in Britain are as
follows-
Figure1: Natural attraction of Britain
(Source: Mihalic, 2016)
Natural attraction- Attractions, which are
created by the nature are called natural
attractions. Attractions like scenic views,
natural water bodies, hills and caves are
example of natural attractions. England has
a lot to offer to the tourists who are looking
for serene natural getaways like Goon hilly
downs and Lake Windermere (Coccossis,
2017.).

Heritage attraction- Manmade attractions,
which has significant historical importance
and was built a long time ago is called
heritage attractions. UK has a lot of heritage
attractions like Queen’s House and
Greenwich Park. These attractions states a
lot about the vast and the diverse history
Britain has. The visitors from different
countries and locals as well can appreciate
these attractions. The Greenwich Park and
the Stonehenge are very popular tourist
attractions. Greenwich Park is also declared
as UNESCO world heritage site. These
attractions are going to serve for both
natural and as well as heritage traveller.
Therefore, people who are visiting for
historical interest will also take an
experience of the natural attractions that UK
has to offer.
Figure 3: Example of purpose built
attraction of UK
(Source: Lu, 2017.)
Purpose built attraction- The attractions that
are built purposefully to attract tourism to a
certain place is called a purpose built
attraction. This type of tourist attraction
creates a great impact on the tourism and the
tourists. Amongst UK’s many purpose built
attractions, places like tower of London,
London eye, British museum, National
Maritime Museum, Buckingham palace and
Alton towers are the most famous ones.
These attractions are almost equivalent of
the UK tourism in a tourists mind. There are
attractions that were built for different
purpose than tourism like Windsor castle,
York Minster, but with time these have also
become chief attractions in UK and now add
to the purpose built attractions. The
architecture which were a necessity for the
locals also acts as a purpose built attractions
and many tourists around the world comes
to UK for the architectural marvels that it
offers and it includes not only castles but
country side houses and galleries and many
more. One of the chief examples of
architectural marvel which are purpose built
in UK are- British museum, The National
Maritime Museum which offers a lot to the
heritage travellers that comes to UK.
Therefore, this overlap in the tourist
attractions serves as a great tool for

encouraging tourists to visit the Great
Britain (Powell and Iankova, 2016.).
Event attractions: Events are also used as
attractions for bringing tourism in an area. A
place which does not have a lot to offer in
natural or manmade attractions, generally
rely a lot on the events for attracting tourists.
In UK black pool illumination is an example
of small event which attracts tourism. UK
has also arranged Olympics and
Paralympics, which are huge events and
attracted a tremendous amount of tourism.
1.2 Analyse the importance of different
visitor attractions.
Tourism being the 4th largest industry, the
enhancement of the tourist attractions will
boost the tourism industry in Britain.
Tourism industry yearly employs a great
number of people, which is also an
important reason to pay importance to the
tourist attractions. The government also
gains a very good amount of revenue from
this industry. The historical attractions of
UK are also benefiting from regular
monitoring which is helping in the
conservation in the history and culture of the
nation (Horner and Swarbrooke, 2016).
Development of business- Tourism has
great impact on the local business which
should be a significant reason to boost the
tourist attractions. There are businesses
which solely rely on the tourist attractions
and there are other industries like hospitality
and food which relies on tourism industry
partly. There are regions which does not
have a lot tourist attractions therefore these
regions business will be boosted by building
new attractions. The nearby market places of
Queens Palace, British Museum, and
Greenwich Park thrive on tourists that visit
these attractions.
Profit- Tourism industry of UK is expected
to grow at the rate of 3.8%, significantly
faster than other industries of UK like retail
and manufacture. Therefore it is not hard to
assume the chances of profit bearing is also
pretty high than other industries in UK. By
2025 the estimated worth of tourism
industry is £257 billion and the government
will attain a huge amount of the revenue.
New tourist attraction will help the industry
to grow even faster and government will
also be very helpful to the travel and tourism
and likely to invest more in this industry for
its growth.
Conservation: The tourism industry helps in
the conservation of lot of the historical sites
and the tourists are very interest in the
culture and the heritage of a nation which
