WELL-BEING IN CHILDREN1
Outline of the Speech
In this speech I would like to take up the issue of wellbeing in children by taking into
account their emotional, physical, spiritual and psychological needs. In an article, Huda et al.
(2019) have suggested that the concept of wellbeing becomes especially important from the
perspective of the students or the children since the mental, physical, emotional and the other
kinds of growth attained by them is directly related to the level of their wellbeing. This even
becomes important from the fact that maximum level of development or growth, be it
emotional, mental, physical and others, is being attained by the individuals during the early
years of their life (Music, 2016).
Recent researches have suggested that the individuals, especially the children, need to
kind of environment wherein their wellbeing is safeguarded and also their different basic
psychosocial needs are being fulfilled in an effective manner (Albrecht, 2018). As discussed
by Crompton (2017), this is important since it had been seen that the children who have been
brought up in a violent or abusive environment often fail to attain the right level of physical,
mental, emotional and other kinds of growth in an adequate manner. Thus, it becomes
important for the family members of the children to ensure the fact that they get a safe as well
as congenial environment wherein their wellbeing or wellness is safeguarded.
I personally believe that there are various ways through which the family members or
the parents can ensure the wellbeing of the children. For example, firstly the family members
or the parents of the children need to ensure that the environment which exists within the
household is a highly safe as well as a secure one wherein the children feel protected and
loved. This is important since if the children do not feel loved or protected then this can
adversely affect their emotional, mental and other kinds of growth. Furthermore, the parents
or the family members ensure that the basic psychosocial needs of the children are being

fulfilled in an effective manner. Huda et al. (2019) are of the viewpoint that the effective
fulfilment of the different psychosocial needs of the children is likely to help them to fully
actualise themselves or for that matter explore the full potential of their lives or personality.
This once again is related to the level of the emotional, mental and other aspects of growth of
the children.
An important aspect that the parents or the family members of the children need to
take into account for the purpose of nurturing the wellness of the children and thereby help
them to attain the right level of growth is the fact that rather than treating the above
mentioned recommendations as isolated entities they need to use them in conjunction with
each other. This can be explained on the basis of the fact that merely offering a safe or
congenial household environment to the children is not enough rather the parents need to
ensure the fact that the basic psychosocial needs of the children are also being fulfilled in an
effective manner so as to help the children to attain adequate growth. Thus, I would conclude
the speech by stating that the concept of wellbeing is an important from the specific context
of the children and the parents or the family members of the children need to take the help of
various measures to nurture the same among the children.
