This essay discusses the concerns of criminologists about the limitations of crime statistics and their impact on the understanding of crime in England and Wales. It also explores the study of victimology and its contribution to changes in the criminal justice system's response to victims. The influence of media on our perception of crime is discussed, along with the explanations provided by criminologists for the difference in crime rates between men and women. The links between social class and crime are examined, as well as the experiences of Black and Minority Ethnic groups with the criminal justice system. The seriousness of crime committed by young people in society today is evaluated.
