Windows Server 2016 Deployment: WMW Company

Abstract
WMW is a newly established firm which specializes in advertising. The firm plans to
implement core IT services but currently, they do not have an IT staff. The organization is
planning to have ninety employees where nine employees will be the executive. The
organization plan to have four departments which are Sales and Accounts department with
fifteen employees, the human resource and Finance with twelve employees, the IT department
with five employees, and creative, media, and the production department with forty-nine
employees. In addition, the organization plans to be located in two different locations that are in
New York and Los Angeles. The organization has already networked the two offices with a plan
to have a secure tunnel which will use IPSec to link the two locations. This raises the need to
have a windows server in place to enables sharing of the different services and resources. In
addition, with windows server, it will enable the organization network infrastructure to remain
secure, reliable, and to be manageable.
Introduction
Most of the organizations are relying heavily on the current technology. This means that
WMW needs to have a network infrastructure so that they can remain competitive and to do it
they need to implement windows server 2016. This paper will highlight the current features of
windows server 2016 and how it can be deployed (Savill, 2017).
New Features of Windows server 2016
Microsoft has continued to put more effort in developing server 2016. One of the features
is docker integration and windows server containers. This feature will allow WMW to abstract
services and applications from the underlying Operating System. Another feature is the Nano
server. This feature enables an organization to boast over 90 percent of the smaller installation

foot print than Windows Server Graphical User Interface installation option. With this feature,
there will be no login interface or any remote desktop capability. Also, Nano Server enables one
not to consume so much disk space of not more than 512 MB. Nano Server features always one
to fix and view networking issues directly from the server console. In addition, it will enable the
IT staff to manage the server 2016 through PowerShell. With Windows Server 2016 there are
fewer reboots required. WMW IT staff will not become frustrated with unnecessary reboots like
the previous editions. In addition, Windows server 2016 offers an easier remote management.
Other editions support replication in the world of Hyper-V which has been limited to
asynchronous replication of the virtual hard-disk but with Windows server 2016, WMW will be
able to replicate the entire volume which is located at the block level. In addition, one can choose
between asynchronous and synchronous replication. With this feature, an organization will be
able to perform a quick failover in case of catastrophe.
Windows Server 2016 provides the ability to build an available storage system which
uses only the attached disks on each and every code. This feature referred to as Storage Spaces
Direct takes that advantage of a new hardware such as NVME SSDs (Ferrill, 2015).
Deployment and Server Editions
WMW Company can only benefit from their network by only making it fault tolerance,
scalable, and consistent. Before deploying Windows server 2016, there are a lot of factors that an
organization needs to consider these are; the number of users and the programs which to be used
by the organization. Other basic requirements are a processor of 1.4 GHz with a 64-bit processor.
In addition, the computer needs to operate on 10/100/1000baseT Ethernet adapter. The current
Windows server deployment standard which has been implemented by lots of organizations is
where each windows server to serve ten employees this is needed so as to improve network

performance. WMW plans to have about ninety employees meaning that the organization needs
to have 10 servers, one for every ten employees and the other one as a backup servers in case one
fails. Also, since LA location is planned to carry the highest number of employees it need to
have seven servers, one as the extra backup server. In addition, the seven servers located in LA
need to have datacenter edition; this is because the edition is optimized for large-scale
virtualization. WMW need to note that one server located in LA need to have an unlimited
number of windows server instances. The New York location need to implement the standard
edition since it has the smallest number of users. WMW needs to note that all the servers need to
use what Microsoft refers to as Per Cole License.

Active Directory
Active directory commonly known as the AD is one of the Microsoft product that was
developed specifically for Windows domain networks. AD feature is included in Windows
server 2016 as set services and processes. The feature authorizes and authenticates all users
within the organization in a windows domain type to assign and enforce security policies in all
the organization computers (Dauti, 2017). When an AD is installed on windows server 2016
some of the services such as DNS client, windows Time, workstation, intersite messaging, and
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper. In addition, in windows server 2016, the AD is like an umbrella title
for identity-related services. WMW organization need to have two domain controllers each for
the two locations. Since LA has the highest number of clients it should have the main domain
controller whereas that in New York it should have the backup domain controller. Figure two
below shows how WMW ought to deploy domain controllers. In addition, the diagram clearly
shows how the domain controllers ought to be organized

DNS and DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol commonly known as DHCP is a network protocol
through which a client can request IT configuration. On the other hand Domain Name System
commonly as DNS is a function which can be compared to the telephone directory. The main
objective of the Domain Name System is translating domain names to Internet Protocol address.
A DNS is also mandated in maintaining domain names. As indicated in the first part of this
paper, WMW is intended to have ninety computer users meaning that the organization need to
have 5 Domain Name System servers, two ought to be located in New York since it will have the
lowest number of users while three in Los Angeles as it will have the highest number of users.
WMW need to configure all the DNS servers in both locations for internal and external. This is
done so as to maintain security. The external DNS ought to have names such as
WMWLA.org.net and WNWNewYork.open.net (Thomas, 2016) .
On the other hand, DHCP will enable the organization to automatically assign a certain user
computer to a certain IP address. There are about six steps which are;
1. Turning on a certain computer with a certain DHCP client
2. DCHP client computer directs the broadcast request which is either DISCOVER or
DCHPDISCOVER
3. The organization router located between the firewall re-directing either of packets to
DHCP server
4. Receiving any of the two packets by the organizational server which is always based on
availability of the set server and the usage policies
5. The organizational server then sending back DHCPOFFER packet or the OFFER packet
with the organization address information

6. Sending back the REQUEST packet so as to confirm leasing of Internet Protocol address.
For WMW, this proposal will go for two DCHP servers. The very first one, the
organization need to have the primary Internet Protocol address where the second one to have
the backup Internet Protocol address. Also, for this scenario the primary Internet Protocol
ought to range from 192.168.2.3 to around 192.168.2.200 while that for backup Internet
address ought to range from 192.168.3.201 to 192.168.3.299.
Application services
To deploy WMW applications or any software it is good for an organization to utilize
Group policies. With group policy, an organization is always in a position to automatically
distribute applications and programs to all the client computers. One can use a Group Policy
to assign applications to computers or users. One can be able to assign a program or an
application to computer users. With group policy an organization is able to publish an
application distribution to the users and when a user logins into their computer the published
program is usually displayed in the remove or add programs on the dialog box.
To deploy application services using the group policy, one needs to open the server
manager then click which is then followed by opening group policy management. At the
group policy management console one then right clicks the domain name which is located in
windows.ae and then clicking create a GOP domain command. In the new GPO one then
types Deploy software which is then flowed by clicking ok. With these steps it enables
enforcing of the security measures on every user computer. WMW can opt to follow the
major four steps which creating a folder, which then followed by placing MSI file into the
shared folder, and then creating a GPO and lasting adding the user computers. The last step is
to update group policy. For the organization to function it needs to have applications such as

Google Chrome, Microsoft office 2016, an accounting software, and internet Kaspersky’s
anti-virus (Morimoto, et al., 2017).
File sharing and printers
File and printer sharing assists users in accessing applications and programs on user
computers. In addition, it will be an advantage for an organization as they do not need to
have each resource for each department, a certain resource can reside in only one server
which can then be distributed throughout the organization network. WMW need to have three
printer services at the LA location and two in the New York location. In addition, WMW
needs to deploy the use of NTFS this increase security measures by ensuring that
unauthorized users do not access the organization programs or applications. Lastly, WMW
needs to implement file manager to assist in managing the organization file server (Krause,
2017).
