Abstract
The term wireless network security is defined as the process for securing the
computer devices and networks from hackers and cyber-attacks. There are major two
kinds of wireless security systems used such as wired equivalent privacy and Wi-Fi
protected access (WPA). Wireless network security is a technique of designing and
ensuring the security of wireless computer devices by reducing unwanted signals from
networks (Al Ameen, Liu, & Kwak, 2012). The aim of this paper is to explore wireless
network security and prevention techniques for reducing security threats and risks
linked with wireless networks. We have selected wireless network security and
prevention technique as a research topic because it is a common topic for investigation
and there are numerous articles were published in the last few years. So, by using these
articles data or information can be collected and understand the key factors that
increase the issue of security breaches and threats (Arora, Yttri, & Nilsen, 2014). It is
observed that there are various security challenges and risk occurred in the field of
wireless networks, for example, phishing, denial of service attack, malware and so on.
This research study focused on wireless network security and techniques for improving
the security of wireless networks. It is recommended that users should adopt firewall,
antivirus, cryptography and authentic servers for reducing cyber-threats and risks
associated with wireless networks. This research paper shows relevant technologies
used in wireless networks and highlighted the challenges or issues occurred with
wireless network technologies. A literature review is conducted in order to identify the
research gap and analyse viewpoints of other researchers on wireless network security.

Overview of the technology
The wireless network is one of the advanced communication technology which is
used to send and receive data or information from one location to another. The use of a
wireless network is growing rapidly and many users use wireless networks for
connecting their computer devices because it is more reliable and flexible technology.
The main advantage of this technology is that users can send and receive data from long
distance but security is one of the biggest concerns for wireless networks (Bikos, &
Sklavos, 2013). There are various kinds of technologies involved in the field of wireless
networks, for example, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee and Wimax.
All these technologies are used for exchanging information from one computer
device to another without using any connecting wires. The Wi-Fi is one of the advanced
wireless network technology which is used by many companies and consumers because
it has potential to transfer a large number of data signals over a long distance
(Cheminod, Durante, & Valenzano, 2013). From a recent study it has been found that
Wi-Fi technology reduces the issue of security because it is more reliable rather than
other wireless technologies. Bluetooth is one of the old communication technologies
which cannot be used for long distance communication because of their low data rate.
Moreover, Zigbee and Wimax both are used in the field of IoT technologies because they
are easier to configure with the computer networks.
In terms of security wired networks are more effective rather than wireless but
wired networks required numbers of connecting wires that increase the overall cost.
Therefore, many consumers use wireless network technologies for interconnecting two
or more computer devices with each other (Curiac, 2016). It is observed that there are
major three kinds of networks used in the field of wireless networks, for example, local
area network, wide area network and wide area network. The other issue linked with
the wireless technologies is configuration conflict due which increase the problem of
data breaching and hacking. It is analysed that more than 50% of attacks were occurred
due to lack of security and conflict problem due to which numbers of consumers lost
their personal data and information.
