Work-Based Learning: Project Management Life Cycle of Touch the Tech App at The Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast

This report discusses the project management life cycle of Touch the Tech app at The Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast. It covers the aims, objectives, planning, progress, and benefits of each stage of the project. The app is a self-service app for customers at the hotel's dining, bar, and restaurant, designed to protect customers and employees from the spread of COVID-19. The report also includes a SWOT analysis and PESTLE analysis of the project.

Work based learning

INTRODUCTION
Work based learning is the approach of learning in which individual gains a real life work
experience and consecutively develop some skills and gain knowledge. Hospitality industry is
highly known for the this approach of learning as the industry contain broad category of varied
service fields such as event planning, travel and tourism, lodging, food and drink and much more.
The aim of this industry to build relationship with guest as a host and serve them with best service
in their leisure time. The present report is the discussion on the The Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast a
UK based hotel that is five star hotel. The hotel is famous for its city view rooms, deluxe junior
suites, the pent house, famous dining and other luxury services for different events. The
Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast has come up with new project which is new self service app for the
customers at dining, bar and restaurant. The report will outline the aims, objectives and planning
of the project. In addition to this progress of project through project life cycle is discussed. Report
defines the way to achieve deadlines of project and benefits of each stage of aims and objectives.
In the end there is reflection on the working experience using SWOT and PESTLE theory.

Planned and initiated the project. Setting targets, aims and objectives for your project
The idea of introducing the bar code scanning app in the dining, restaurant and bar of the
Fitzwilliam Hotel for the customers using the latest AI technology is the new project of the hotel.
The reason for the initiation of this project is due to the major concern of protection and social
distancing due to the Covid-19. The panning and initiation of the this project was started with this
idea of new technology oriented self service app named as “Touch the Tech”. This app is the
software in which the customers will order their food by scanning the bar code attached to table
and make the payment through similar app. This will allow the customers an employees to avoid
the direct contact as the app will act as the interaction between bot. This Touch the Tech app is the
well known example of the artificial intelligence.
Objectives:
The main objective of introducing the new project of development of Touch the Tech app
is to protect the customers and employees from the spread of the Covid-19 by maintaining all the
measures of the social distancing. The app is also designed to ease the process of ordering making

it more time efficient and flexible. The another objective behind this new project related to
technological change is to integrate the business operations with latest technology of artificial
intelligence.
Aim:
The aim of this project is to make the process of food and drinks ordering at the restaurant, bar and
dining through digital menu.
Managed, monitored and evaluated the progress of the project throughout the project life cycle
from initiation to completion.
The project management life cycle is a series of an essential activities which help to accomplish
the objective of project. This framework include stage to transform the idea into a reality. In this,
there are different dimensions and difficult levels, which re mapped to project management cycle
structure (Elangovan, 2020). In context of the Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast, it had developed a self
services app that is Touch the tech. This project contain a life cycle, therefore its project life cycle
are discussed below:
 Initiation stage- This phase define the process to start a new project. It determine that
what objective the project should be accomplished. In this the individual need to identify
their business needs, opportunities, problems and the brainstorm methods which their team
can attain that need by solving the problem an seize the available opportunity. In context of
Touch the tech, due to the COVID 19 there is the possibility if spread virus from one
person to another. To avoid this problem this app invent with the objective of to protect
people against this virus and minimize the chance of transferring components of this
disease (Newton, 2019).
 Planning- In this phase of the project life cycle management, the larger project is broken
down into smaller task and prepare schedule in order to complete the assignment. Theses
smaller task should have high potential for the success. The company determine scope of
their project and objective of project. In relation to Touch the tech, for making this project
a team is build to work on it and divide this task into small work which make the this
process very easy. We set the deadline of each smaller task and make a high potential to
achieve success. We set a budget for the expenditure on making this project as it required a

high amount of the capital. We make different polices and scheduling to complete this
project on time (Galli, 2018).
 Execution- This stage consists of some activities which are defined in the project
management plan. It include the management of stakeholders expectations, coordination
with resources and people and perform the other activities which are related to the project
deliverables. In relation to Touch the tech, during making this app we create task and
organize the workflow. We make sure that the member are not overloaded and clearly
explain this task to the team members by proving essential guidelines to them. The
organsiation provide the facility of training so that the team members easily understand
the project clearly.
 Closing phase- In this process, after completion the work on given project, the
organisation enter the closure phase. Where they provide the final deliverables, release the
project resources and ascertain success of project. In this, they perform controlled shut
down of their project in end. They also perform the activities such as evaluating what they
did and what did not with their project. In context of Touch the tech, at last, we make this
project successful and this app help us to attain all the objective for which we make this
project (Hietajärvi, Aaltonen and Haapasalo, 2017).
How the project completion met the deadlines and accomplish the benefits of each stage aims and
objectives for this project.
While working on this app, the deadline meet to set so that it can be complete on time. During
performing activities for this app certain activities need to be decide so that work can be done
appropriately and effectively . By setting deadline the work being done successfully their were
some steps that were setted in order to achieve a goal that are described in below .
1. By making assurance and making proper strategy of working and systematically and
properly. Most of management have the tendency of underestimating time needed for
tasks, it would be done on time.
2. Determination the key stages of the assignment and setted of the interim deadline
for implementing and finishing each level.
3. Implement with the deadlines and operating and working backwards determines when
steps to be followed properly.

4. Highlighting the project that are most crucial and that needed the most coordinated
with other individuals.
5. It gives the motivation to the workers so the work can be done on time or before . In
big corporation the companies set the deadline so that they can be attain on time.
6. It increase the ability of the workforce and they increase the powers of making the
work on time. Whether it improves the quality that directly hits the efficiency of the
company and increase the profitability of the industry.
Aims and objective of this project on each stage
This app is invented with the objective to protect people against the COVID 19 which is
very successful achievement of this project. It also improve the team collaboration of our business
and help them to accomplish shared goals. It improve the team effect9ivenss and enhance their
skills by working on such type of a project. During communication in team it align them and make
enable them to focus on the goal. By innovating such new technology to provide a competitive
advantages to the organisation.
Reflection
SWOT Analysis
After evaluating my experience throughout the project at the Fitzwilliam hotel I analysed that in
hospitality industry there wide range of services to experience. Therefore, in to order to have deep
insight of my learning and experience at the workplace while working on project of installation of
new technology for digital menu SWOT analysis is conducted below:
Strengths
 During the working on whole project I realized that my management skills as front office
manger are my key strength. I was able to handle all the daily operations, allocate the
resources and other activities related to new project with ease and at time.
 Another key strength that I experienced was my effective communication skills during the
whole project cycle I was having clear interaction with other members of the hotel that were
part of the project. This helped me to avoid miscommunication and conflicts.
Weaknesses
 During the middle of project execution i experience the delay in meeting the deadlines of the
project sub activities. This made me realised that I have weak time management skills which
led to hindrance in my work making me delay.

 As the project was based on new technology installation app for digital menu for which their
was requirement of effective technical knowledge. But I analysed that I have lack of technical
knowledge which seems as weakness to me.
PESTLE analysis
This analysis is consider as a means to analyse the global factors that impact performance
of a product in the market. This matrix monitor and analyse macro environmental factors and play
an important role in overall performance of a business.
 Political factor- In this, the decision re taken by the government. The authorities impact
public facilities of a country and economy. The decisions regarding laws, restriction, tax
regulations, policies, government plan and many more are included in this. For making this
app I take the permission of government and determine impact of policies on this app. This
project is based on UK and this country has stable government which encourage the free
trade due to which we work on this project easily (Jia, and et.al., 2018).
 Economic factors- The country's economy greatly impact the organisational activities and
success. It include the elements such as exchange rate, economic growth, interest rate,
unemployment etc. I had made a budge in making this project as being technologically
advanced it is very expensive solution. It is very cost beneficial that the regular system.
 Social factors- These elements have to do with demographic of a country and with the
cultural aspects. Essential demographical statistics include the education levels, age
distribution, ratio of gender, pollution and many more. During making this project we
consider the demographic society. By taken into account the customers changing
behaviour toward the technical services I made this app according to their requirements.
As now the customers turning towards the online system, for this purpose I invented this
app as it is time saving and payment become very easily and quickly (Song, Yu, Murray
and Cortopassi, 2017).
 Technological factors- The technological advancement in a market determine that in
which technology a business should invest in order to remain up to date. The technology
component involve technical innovation, automation, rate of technology exchange and
R&D investment. UK is technically developed nation. It is progressive that will not

suppress the implementation of this advanced technological system. Overall level of the
electrical networks is also appropriate for integration of this app.
 Legal factors- It contain a wide range of the laws that impact the way of the business
operates. It include the privacy and data security, tax law, employment regulation,
discrimination low, online business law, advertising and marketing regulation and many
more. I check that our this COVID 19 safety app will not break any government's rule.
This app is making with safety and security purpose as in this system there is the facility of
data privacy of the customers. It protect the personal information of the clients and
customers. So it avoid the legal issue and work with the laws of government.
 Environmental factors- This component consist of the aspects such as geographical
location, climate, weather and other etc. Factors that impact the ecology are very important
like waste disposal, recycling, natural resources and others. This project is made by taken
in to account the environmental safety as this automatic app help the people to care for the
natural resources. And it will also contain the sustainability which is very useful for the
environment. This system will save energy and not harm the environment in any way
(Fakher, 2019) .
CONCLUSION
It is concluded from the above report that for every organisation it is very important to manage
and monitor the new project in order to have successful project initiation and execution. Most
importantly to manage a project that contains technology which helps the hospitality organisations
to grow.
