INTRODUCTION
Human Resource Management (HRM) is an integral part of every organisation. This
department helps in recruiting, selecting and providing training to new employees. It includes
various processes and practices that are used for selecting individuals within firm. Recruitment
and selection process must be fair for every staff member and provide them equal chances to
grab the opportunity (Ang, 2012). This report is based on Purple Mail Company (PMC), which is
one of the largest courier firm in UK. At present, they are facing various kinds of problems
regarding leadership, management and administration. So, this assignment will help in preparing
the document for recruiting candidates and defining the impact of legal and ethical
considerations for recruitment and selection in PM Company. It will explain various skills and
attributes as well which are required for the leadership. It will also describe several ways to
motivate all staff members to achieve the set objectives.
TASK 1
1.1 Various procedures of recruitment and selection for PM Company
Being the HR manager, I have to prepare a job description for recruiting and selecting
suitable candidates for PM Company due to circumstances, senior manager and various staff left
the organisation (Bush and Middlewood, 2013). So, it is required to make the documentation for
above purpose.
Here are the job description as well as person specification for the post of HR executive
for Purple Mail Company:

Above this job description, it describe all roles and responsibilities of an individual for
the HR executive post in the PM Company. So I will prepare this job description for recruiting
best candidate and maintain healthy working environment.
1.2 Several effects of legal, regulatory and ethical considerations on the process of recruitment
and selection
Legal and regulatory considerations: it is considered all the laws and regulation which are
related with recruitment and selections of the persons. In this includes various practices which
may be illegal in term of employment laws and it was framed by the UK government. In this
considered several acts such as Equality Act, Discrimination Act and Health and safety Act etc.
within the company.
Individuals must have desired ability that will support in achieving the organisational
goals and objectives (Chen and Lee, 2014). So, candidate should be selected on the basis of
criteria and they are required to perform their tasks according to job description as well as
procedures which are followed by purple mail company.

Wage act: According to this act; it describes that there must not be any discrimination
related to the wages which are given to workers. All employees should be treated equally and
same level workers should be given with fair as well as minimum set wage.
The equal act: In this consider as unlawful if there is any discrimination among
employees due to their Age, race, sex, disability, pregnancy and maternity, religion and belief
etc. so there are several legal laws and legislations for the employees that can affect on the
recruitment and selection procedure.
Here are some legal and ethical considerations such as: Age- person should be major for doing work or task Document verifications- it help in identify about authentic record and information which
is provided by them must be right
 Medical fitness- it is necessary while recruiting any candidate and it produce at the time
of appointment which helps in showing regarding medical fit to get an employment.
Therefore, high level of accuracy of a particular CV date must be required by the applied
candidate for suitable positions (Dimovski and Penger, 2011). As a manager, I will select all
member according to their matching profile with job. It is must to know about people history and
verification when selecting them within the firm.
Employment Act: This act was formed in 1946 and its main aim is to provide
employment opportunities to the people and reduce unemployment within the country. It was
formed for workers welfare. This was continuity policy of the federal government as they are
responsible for providing employment for those who are able, wiling and seeking to work.
Discrimination Act: This act was formed in 1964 and its main purpose is prohibits the
any kinds of discrimination which is based on race, colour, sex and origin. For every
organisation, there should not be any kinds of partiality and discrimination among people.
Health and Safety Act: This act is very important as it is UK government body and they
are responsible for enforcing health or safety at workplace in this legislation. Its major purpose is
to produce effective advice regarding health and safety issues as well as guidance on relevant
legislation. There should be proper safety and security within the organisation.

1.3 Roles and responsibilities for selection process
Being the HR manager of Purple Mail Company, there are various roles and
responsibilities which I have to perform for selecting best or suitable candidates and avoid or
eliminate unsuitable person during this process. So it should be fair and it includes the following:
 I will Ensue that Selection process must be in effective manner to the candidates.
 This procedures should not be affected by various factors such as partiality among
employees on the basis of their age, sex, race, caste and diversity etc.
 It is require to secure confidentiality for fairly treatment of all applicant's information.
 A fix process must be followed and fairness in the nature for all candidates that based on
their job and specification.
 There should be honesty in exercise for job prospects and condition of employment.
 Most important included in this procedures such as short listing of candidates,
arrangements of interviews and its sessions, assessment, testing process etc.
As a HR manager of the company, there are various roles and responsibilities which I
have to perform. I have to monitor the entire functions of the working department of the
organisation. I will choose better selections procedures for finding the suitable candidates. It is
must be required to focus on employee's ability and skills for performing any particular task or
work so I will select best person as per the requirements.
Roles in the interview process:
I will ask appropriate questions to the candidates and expect for getting best answers. I
will check his or her knowledge, his body language, communications skills and many more while
conducting interview round.
Placement: after appointing or selecting the new employees, I will conduct orientations and
induction program for interacting them with business organisation and old staff members.
1.4 Manager contribution in process of selection within PM company
The contributions of HR manager in the recruitment and selections of the sales head
which has been analysed as the satisfactory. They handle all the process of recruitment and
selections procedures and also manage them in effective manner while conducting this in an
order way. As a manager, I will engage in various activities in this process for finding and
selecting suitable candidates for the organisation.

Selections and recruitment procedure must always be in fair and ethical. As a HR
manager in The Purple Mail Company, I will implement or take corrective action for selecting
best or suitable person that will contribute in increasing work productivity and also ensure that
selections of staff is fair and ethical.
Attainment: For effective hiring of person, attainment must be required as in this include
candidate's education, qualification, and experience etc. it support in determining the ability and
suitability that related to work (Fraley and Brumbaugh, 2011). Educated person have knowledge
regarding job and their experience helps in increasing efficiency of work. So I will consider these
requirement while choosing a good person. In this company, there is no need to appoint high
qualified person because of delivering goods or couriers so less qualified person also suitable for
this positions.
General intelligence: It is related to fundamental and intellectual capacity which also
important to appoint any individual as candidates should have knowledge or intelligence for
judging necessary things and their management. It play important role in hiring process. But in
the PM company, it is not necessary to consider this factor due to selecting a staff for delivering
couriers so few works include a proper pattern that is to be followed.
Physical attributes: In the process of selections and recruitment, this factor is also
consider in which I will ensure about candidate's health which must be good, physiques,
appearance or dressing sense as well as bearing and speech (Heath, 2012). Because this factor is
require for meeting with many people and represent the company on front of them.

2.1 Required skills and attributes for effective leadership
A good person should have great leadership qualities such as proper skills and attributes
towards his or her duties. In every organisation, HR executive play vital role in recruiting best
candidate, attracting new talents organise training and development sessions for employees to
enhance their skills, knowledge and abilities for making successful business. Due to various
problems and circumstances, PM company is facing lots of issues regarding administration,
management and leadership. So as a HR manager, I must be ensure about leadership skills and
attributes of an individual and they should have high level of qualities like a good leader. All

candidates will be short listed on the basis of work delegation, communication abilities, excellent
character, decision-making and motivations skills.
Great man theory: In this leadership styles defined that the leaders characteristics are inherited
and cannot be acquired. As this style support the statements that leaders are born not made.
Trait theory: it is opposite of above theory that leaders can be made by acquiring knowledge and
skills as well as through individuals creativity, responsibilities and their intelligence.
Autocratic leaders: they do not consider the views of their followers in the decision-making
process.
Democratic: these leaders take decisions by considering the views of their followers.
Motivate to the team members: It is best quality for individual development and boost
their morale to increase work productivity (Lev, 2013). Person should have this quality to
motivate team of PM company to achieve their task and objectives and also increase their
confidence level.
Proper management: Person should be able to manage the work and employees, that the
assigned task should be completed on time and also standard of quality must be maintain in the
work so it can be done through delegation of work among team members.
Effective communications skills: Individual must have sound communication skills for
providing informations and communicate with all people within the organisation. It includes
gather information regarding any problem or issues as well as listening feedback of employees
and giving clear message.
Excellent character and moral values: It helps in maintaining healthy relations among
employees and make effective working environment. Person should have quality to make
decision on time for achieving organisational goals and objectives.
2.2 Difference between leadership and management
Managers and leaders both play important role within an organisation as they play
different roles and responsibilities for managing the work force effectively (Lorenz, 2012). Some
of person fails to understand the difference between them so as a manager, I will try to make
understand regarding leadership and management by examining such differences which is
following:

2.3 Comparison of leadership styles for different situations
In the organisation, various situations and problems can be arise while running the
business. PM company is already facing many issues due to some circumstances, so as a HR
manager, I will use different leadership style in the situations of induction process of the new
recruits and communicate the vision of an organisation.

Transactional leadership style: This can be use for induction process which is conducted
for new employees. In this includes introduction of the company, rules and regulation that need
to be followed (Mendenhall and Stahl, 2017). So this leadership style can be adopted for
avoiding change elements while delivering inductions process to the new recruits and in this
manager require to possess judgement quality.
Autocratic style: It can be adopted while communicating the vision of the company to all
people because proper communications required with stakeholders regarding the vision and
values of the company so it is must to clarifies his concept regarding the same. So this leadership
style support in achieving company's goals and objectives. Along with that, continuous efforts
are required from employees side for obtaining the task or vision. It will help in developing the
problem solving skills which is needed for a team leader for managing team member effectively.

Benefits for the achievement of targets: Leaders and manager should encourage to the
employees for effective work and provide benefits that they could perform the work in an
inspiring way.
Rewards and recognition: Inspiration can be provide by giving proper rewards and
recognition for the work or task which is performed by the employee.

3.1 Benefits of team-working and review the effectiveness of the team
Every firm has its own culture, values and business ethics so each employee must follow
for the organisation. There are some benefits for the team-working that should understand by
new recruits such as:
Support: It is essential for any team within an organisation to be successful as it helps in
mutual understanding and motivating to new joiner to work within team and groups for
achieving goals and objectives.
Learn new skills: New employees required to learn new skills so learning and developing
session support to enhance their skills for obtain particular targets. Working within a team helps
in learning and become dextrous.
3.2 Importance of leaders and members towards specific goals in difficult situations
Situation: In this analyse the situations of an organisation as PM company is facing
several problems and issues so it is required to manage the situations by adopting the various
strategies.

Occurrence: When I was working within team in which some members were part of the
recruitment and selections team and the other were working in finding best delivery methods for
couriers so Mr. Z performed his task in best manner by finding new trends and transportation
facilities for reaching at people.
Strategies: As a manager of PM company, I assigned the roles and responsibilities to all
employees according to their skills and knowledge. That helps in perform task efficiently.
3.3 Review the team for achieving goals
There are various factors that can be use for reviewing the effectiveness of new team in
achieving particular goals and objectives for The Purple Mail company.
Quality of work: It is must to ensure about the quality of work that should be maintained
in according to time management. Delay in work quality should not be there.
Meet deadlines: Targets and objectives must be set with the specific deadlines and
should be achieved on time (Peterson, 2011). Completion of work within the specified period is
considered as the great achievement of an organisation.
Task 4
4.1 Important factors involved in planning, monitoring and assessment of work performance
Organisation would be required to monitor the employee performance as well as suggest
feedback to improve the factors which is used in planning, monitoring and assessment of the
work performance for the PM company.
Planning: All task or work that are assigned to employees must be planned in advance as
they require to communicate with expected level of standards which they need to deliver. For
example progression, training and development etc.
Monitoring: All performance of every individual and their work behaviour must be
supervised on regular basis. For example progress report, deadlines and attendance etc.
Assessment: In this, it would be observed that employees are having skills set for
handling the job role and also analyse that they can perform multi-tasking activities by
measurement of their work.

4.2 Plan and deliver the assessment of the development needs of individual
As a manager of PM company, I need to write a proper plan and deliver it for developing
personal needs (Terkel, 2011). There are steps that I will use in developing and monitoring the
performance of employees such as:
Setting goals: I will set the goal for develop the personal growth and achieve
organisational objectives as well as increase revenue of the company.
Performance measurement: It is require to find the best person by evaluating their
performance on the basis of productivity, attendance etc.
Training and developing personal skills: In this, it is must to identify the needs of
training and development programmes and organise this session for employees by measuring
their performance (Nkomo, 2011). It will help to increase confidence level of an employees and
they will perform their task in effective manner in the future.
Set an evaluation schedule: In this, a schedule will be set up in which employees and
manager will have discussion on their achievement in past years as well as manager take
decisions regarding giving rating to the employees according to their work performance.
4.3 Evaluation of success of assessment process for The Purple Mail company
Effective assessment of performance always helps in achieving organisational goals and
objectives so this beneficial for both as employee and firm. It helps in understanding the roles
and responsibilities of every individual. For the purpose of obtaining task and targets, managers
and leaders should support or motivate to all team members that helps inn making organisation
effective (Terkel, 2011). There are some factors that affects on the evaluation of the success of
assessment process such as:
 Assessment process help to make successful organisation.
 Worker of the company can be satisfy with help of assessment process.
 It should be gone by the checking of relevant perfection.
 It is require to evaluate the goals and outcomes on regular basis
 there should be conducted a proper pattern of interview with all participants.
 It will support in effective observation in regard of effectiveness and efficiency of the
particular work.
 All assessment should be completed within a specified time frame.

 It is require to make the assessment process by using form of questionnaire that cover all
important points.
 There must be a proper review for judging the assessment whether it is fair, inclusive or
not.
 Performance appraisal report is another helpful factor of assessment process.
 It will be ensure regarding reliability and validity for this procedures and it should be
maintained properly.
CONCLUSION
From above project report, it has been concluded that human resource management is
very important for every organisation. Selection and recruitment process helps ton select the best
available resources. The Purple Mail company is currently having various problems and issues
regarding leadership, management and administration so it has been making losses for some
years. As a HR manager, I prepared documentation for selecting and recruiting new staff
members. This report explained that leadership is different from management as leaders helps in
building good relations between the team members. In this assignment, transactional and
autocratic leadership styles used for encouraging employees to perform effectively and achieve
organisational goals and targets. Team work play vital role to attain best results or outcomes. It
also described the various stages of performance appraisal system and assessment of
performance help to both employee and the employer.
