1ENGLISH ESSAYNathaniel Hawthorne has written many illegible things in his short story named“Young Goodman Brown” and it has been observed that the readers have to face lots ofproblem to identify the main character of the story (Hawthorne, Nathaniel). The author hasused many symbols in his story and talk about the theory of witchcraft. However, all thesesigns had not been described by him and that put a question mark in the minds of the readerregarding the where about of the characters of his story. The way of approaching regardingthe faith of the men and the women has caused hatred in between the readers and the authorhas failed to remove the doubts from the minds of the reader (Melville, Herman). The depth of the faith engraved in the mind of Goodman Brown has been described inan improper way and he has changed his feeling after he entered into a forest and met thedark mass in there (Melville, Herman). He had prescribed that “And Faith, as the wife wasaptly named, thrust her own pretty head into the street, letting the wind play with the pinkribbons of her cap” (Hawthorne, 79). According to the mental preparation of the author, itwas resembled first that the faith of both spouses are strong and author has shown the samewith the narration of Goodman Brown when he pray before the God and inculcate his namebefore go to the bed by stating “Amen! Say thy prayers, dear Faith, and go to bed at dusk, andno harm will come to thee” (Hawthorne, 79). Goodman Brown parted with a very strongperspective and an “excellent resolve for the future” (Hawthorne, 80), and he “felt himselfjustified in making more haste on his present evil purposes” (Hawthorne, 80). According tothe belief of Goodman, God will justify all the wrong works he had done so far and will reachhim home safely. He becomes blind in faith and the amount of faith has been revealed whenhe replied back to the dark figure he met in the forest on asking his co-operation with thefigure in the forest. He had clearly stated that he had finalized his target to get out of theforest and follow the path shown by the God and mentioned that “Having kept my covenant
