Your presentation must draw upon the course materials and specifically address the following points:
- The English language is an important skill for children to learn. The Australian Curriculum states that learning English is important for children’s development which is required for their education in the future. Through studying English children are able to gain a greater understanding of how language enables us to interact and build relationships and become imaginative and confident thinkers (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority [ACARA]. (2018)).
The language experience that would be provided by the educator to a classroom full of grade three children aged between seven to eight years is a small group experience called spelling in the air.
During group time the educator will explain to the children the spellings in the air activity. They have to write down a word on a piece of paper and then see if they can “see” the letters in the air above them and then get them to write the word in the air, saying the letter that they are writing out loud. The teacher will give the children different words that they could write in the air and they will help the children to spell to the word out. The purpose of this experience is to help children improve their oral communication. Through repetition of writing out the words and spelling it out, the children are enhancing their language and how different words and letters are being articulated. (Fellows and Okelys, 2019). This activity links to ACELA1485 in the Australian curriculum as it is developing children’s awareness of letter sound relationships when they are drawing them out in the air. They are also gaining an understanding of relationships between the letters in the word and letter patterns to spell the word(ACARA) (2018)).
- There is not right way to describe literacy and the definition reflects on the theories and the perspective of their authors. Over the years the definition of Literacy has changed both nationally and internationally. Literacy is complex and it incorporates a range of modes of different communication as well as talking. With the world constantly changing and the continually development of technology, it is important to have the ability to critically analyse texts(Fellows and Okelys, 2019). The Australian curriculum defines literacy as students listening, reading, viewing, speaking and creating oral and visual print of language in a range of different contexts[ACARA]. (2018)).
The literacy experience that would be provided by the educator to a classroom full of kindergarten, aged 5-6 years old is a small group experience called Lego letters(FunLearningForKids, 2021).
During group time the educator will explain to the children the Lego letters activity. They will get a sheet of paper with different sight words on it and they will have Lego blocks with different letters written on it and that they have to match the letters on the blocks to the letters in the sight words. The purpose of this experience is to help children to become aware of different sight words. This will help improve the children’s reading ability, when children stop to figure out the words they lose concentration and ability to comprehend what they are reading. Gaining an understanding of sights words will help support students knowledge of language structure, patterns we use to speak and language of different books we read (Marzouk, 2008). This activity links to ACELY1649 in the Australian Curriculum as it is developing children’s grammatical knowledge and they are practicing phrasing and fluency of words[ACARA]. (2018)).
- Literacy and language play’s an important role in children’s cognitive development.
Language allows us to communicate and interact with society. This will allow for children to develop important relationships with their peers and become confident learners (Mkandawire, 2018). Whereas literacy is the ability of understating symbols and patterns of the alphabet. After one has become literate then they are able to comprehend different written sources (DifferenceBetween.com, 2013).
Throughout classroom language would be taught through song interaction, writing out different words and interaction with their peers. The Spellings in the air activity allows children to interact with their peers and teachers with the words that they are writing in the air and help each other out. This activity will help enhance their language development through communicating with people around them and this will allow them to make meaning and understating of new experiences while learning different words(Fellows and Okelys, 2019).
Literacy would be taught through different hands on activities surrounding the pronunciation of words, spelling of words and the different patterns and symbols that make up the English language. Through different activities children will have a larger understanding of reading and writing skills that will help them in the future(Fellows and Okelys, 2019).
Literacy and language plays an important role in a child’s development and it is important that they are taught together through their schooling.
