1. Driving undistracted is the best way to drive because it is the only legal way to
drive but it is also the safest way to drive These are the three most common
types of distractions to avoid.
a. The first type of distraction is visual; this means taking your eyes off of the

ii. The most common form of visual distraction comes from your
1. Set your navigation before you begin driving and turn on the
2. Many cars are equipped to tell you when a call is
coming through so that you can press a button on your
steering wheel to either answer or decline.
3. Avoid texting and driving
a. There are studies that have shown that using hands-free
devices to make phone calls is no safer than using
handheld devices. In fact, the National Safety Council
(NSC) contends that drivers can miss 50% of what they
are seeing around them out the windshield if they are
talking on a hands-free device.
b. The second type of distraction is manual.
i. Manual distractions come from taking your hands off of the steering
1. This is often done by attempting to multitask.
a. Whether it be dipping your nuggets in bbq sauce
while driving or even holding your phone to your ear.
b. Rummaging through your center console or backseat for
an item such as a lighter, perfume, charger, etc.
c. The third type of distraction is cognitive.
d. Cognitive distractions are deceiving because they allow drivers to have full
view of their surroundings, but they are often not able to fully process
hazards that could occur.
i. A cognitive distraction is one that causes a driver’s mind focus to drift
away from driving, which includes using hands-free calling devices,
talking to other passengers, daydreaming, listening to the radio, etc.
ii. Cognitive distractions can become exponentially more dangerous when
both recreational and prescribed drugs are in the mix as well as alcohol.
iii. Driving tired is another example of a cognitive distraction.
2. Driving distracted has proven fatal in many cases and can not only ruin your life but you
are putting others at risk.
a. In the U.S. in 2018, over 2,800 people were killed and an estimated
400,000 were injured in crashes involving a distracted driver.
b. About 1 in 5 of the people who died in crashes involving a distracted driver
in 2018 were not in vehicles―they were walking, riding their bikes, or
otherwise outside a vehicle
c. Taking the chance of ruining someone's life or your own is not worth
sending a text or making sure your nugget has the perfect amount of
sauce on it.
d. So do the best thing and drive undistracted.
1. I will now summarize
a. According to the CDC there are three main types of distraction
i. First is visual
ii. Second is manual
iii. Third is cognitive
b. These distractions can stop the driver from assessing the road for
