Proposal 1: Racial Predisposition –
The aim of this study is to examine the direct link between race and violent criminal activity. In this study, I plan to prove the direct and positive correlation between race and incidence of committing violent crimes. This will then prove that race is the strongest indicator of tendency toward violent crimes.
The first ethical concern here that sticks out is the seemingly author bias. If the author already has a preconceived idea of violent crimes committed by a particular “race” it can affect the results of the study. The author might try to lean the evidence more towards a connection of race and criminal activity when race by itself is not the only factor.
Another ethical concern here is that the study will be profiling a specific race, causing more tension in communities. How will the author measure the correlation between race and criminal activity without violating rights, also I believe you would have to pout yourself and others into direct danger to really draw results.
Proposal 2: Electroshock Therapy – In this study, I will examine the effect of electroshock therapy on undesirable behavior in human subjects. This study will administer electrical shocks to human subjects as a disciplinary measure when undesirable behavior is observed. The goal of the study is to determine whether the electroshock therapy is a suitable treatment for resolving disciplinary issues in preteens and adolescents. If this therapy is found to be effective, it will be prescribed to resolve disciplinary issues in preteens and adolescents.
Electroshock Therapy is a completely inhumane method. It violates many ethical boundaries. Some of the effects of electroshock therapy can include memory loss, lower intelligence, distress and can even be life threatening. In fact, this method is so unethically fit and dehumanizing that even though there are supposedly consent forms, none have ever been released and scientists say that no one would rightfully consent without grossly coerced into doing it. It amazes me that despite all the violations and harm this can do, ECT is still used as a form of treatment today.
I fully support a study that helps teach children and adolescent about the consequences of their actions and behavior and resolving those issues. However, knowing the harmful effects this treatment can have on adults, this would be extremely harmful to the growing brains and developing minds of the young.
Proposal 3: Health Problems, Diet, and Socioeconomic Status – This study aims to examine the relationship between health problems (diabetes, heart disease, and obesity), diet, and socioeconomic status. It is proposed that people of lower socioeconomic status are more likely to encounter these problems. Research will be conducted on human subjects where data are collected on diet (the types of food consumed along with money spent on food), and this will be related to the overall health of individuals in the study. The results and findings of this research will be published publicly so others can see the risks of consuming cheap, low-quality food.
This study, out of all, presents a well-rounded research question, and focuses on a direct correlation between health and diet, and how socioeconomic status plays into that. While this study has the best overall approach, I do feel there are some ethical concerns here to address.
It says that the findings of the study will be published but does not really explain how. My concern here is that if names of those involved or the location it takes place is released it could expose the participants. Given the context of the study looking into poor health and diet, related to lower income, there could be a sense of shame or embarrassment
