DEFINING SOCIALIZATION
1. Concept and definition
The topic that has been chosen for this assignment is Socialisation. It can be referred to as
the process of social influence where an individual receives or assimilates the culture and
the subculture of his or her groups and in the course of acquiring these cultural elements,
the self and the personality of the individuals are shaped. Socialization hence addressees
two most important issues of the social life, the issue of human development and the
problem of social continuity (Zarakol, 2014).
Socialisation makes an individual acceptable and responsive to the society. The cultural
pattern of the group in the process gets incorporated in the personality of a child.
However, it prepares an individual to fit in the group and perform the various social roles.
Education helps in constant learning and individual tends to learn more due to the
interaction with the other people. Hence, it facilitates a diversified education pathway for
an individual. People socialize, they tend to learn a varieties of things that they can use as
experience in the near future (Makoe, 2014). A socialisation is an appropriate way for
literacy acquisition for the diverse learners as they are able to come in contact with
people of diverse experiences and languages.
2. Personal relevance
I have personally witnessed the importance of socialization in children with
disability and how socialisation have helped to eradicate the self-perceived stigma in such
individuals. I have a neighbour who had been suffering clinical depression and had totally
isolated himself from the social world, partly due to self -perceived stigma. However, in
due course of time, I have realized that socialization prepares people to participate in
social groups by teaching them with expectations and norms I am blessed to have a
community, where lot of community activities takes place providing each of the members
to participate on them. I have realized that socialization has three primary goals like
teaching impulse control and development of conscience, preparing people to perform
certain social roles and cultivation of shared sources of value and meaning.
It has been stated by Mills, Rosenberg and McInerney, (2015), the socialising helps in
alleviation symptom of depression. Increased social interaction assists the sufferers to

rebuild their self-esteem-that in turn an enable them to maintain and develop positive

2. Proposing a new experience
Keeping in mind, the presence of diverse families residing in our community, I have
decided to put up a cultural activity, where each of the families residing will have to
participate. Each of the families will be representing their culture. They can say poems,
sings a song, or stage a drama, as per their convenience.
This activity will assist in socialization. People with greater depression and dysfunctional
behaviours have been found to be helped by such community based activities.
Another, such activity is by organising a community picnic, where one can
prepare his/her traditional dish. Such types of activities would also facilitate positive
interactions. Although, it has been stated in the studies, that depressed people generally
pay attention to the negative social interaction, but this does not mean that there is no
chance of diverting their attention (Pritchard et al., 2015). Such activities might satisfy
the quest of depressed people in their need for the belonging in relationship. It can be
anticipated that such activities will the not only help in the socialisation of anyone having
special needs but those without any special needs.
