Introduction and brief history of 3M Company
The study is concerning the discussion of the various aspects that govern the
organizational behavior of the 3M organization. The 3M Company is a US based multinational
conglomerate that mostly engages in the manufacture of health care, worker safety and consumer
goods. The products that are manufactured include, laminates, fire protection equipment,
worker’s protection equipment, paint protection films and window films. The company was
originally founded as the Minnesota mining and manufacturing company in 1909 by John Dwan,
Hermon Cable, Henry Brian and William McGonagle. Later the organization began to produce
many different types of goods like waterproof sandpaper and tapes. In the 1960s and 70s the
company expanded its business to manufacturing board games. The name was officially changed
to 3M Company in 2002 (3M Science, 2019). By this time the company had already established
its present business. The company was able to move effectively despite manufacturing a number
of goods throughout its history spanning more than a century. The worldwide sales of the
company are around 20 Billion US dollars. Interestingly, around 50% of the sales revenue comes
from international sales.
Mission, Vision and Values
3M wants to become one of the most internationally recognized name in safety
equipment manufacturing. The company wants to achieve this through optimization of all the
manufacturing areas of the organization. The mission of the organization is to contribute actively
towards sustainable development by enhancing CSR, environmental sustainability and economic
progress. The vision is to constantly focus on advancing, enhancing and improving its
functionality through constant innovation. The values of the organization are acting with utmost

honesty, customer satisfaction and provision of attractive returns on investments, respect the
social and physical environment, value and develop employees, create strong relationship with
all the associated people.
Seven People centered practices in the organization
The company engages in many people centered activities to improve the work lives of its
employees. These are:
The organization provides high standard training to all its employees. All the employees
are mentored and train effectively to perform better. There are opportunities for cross-
level training
3M provides employees with essential opportunities for community involvement
The compensation levels of 3m for the employees are some of the highest in the industry.
3M ensures that all of their important publics are effectively compensated.
3m firmly believes in workplace diversity and ensures that all the employees from
diverse backgrounds are included within the organizational processes without any form
of biasness. It identifies itself as an equal opportunities employer (Life With 3M, 2019).
3M provides much importance to the military veterans providing them important quotas
to work in various positions in the organization
The organization frequently engages in rewards and recognition activities to make the
employees understand the value of their performances. It has good incentive and
remuneration schemes to benefit the people that provide high levels of productivity to the
organization (Vasu, Stewart & Garson, 2017).

The company constantly motivates the employees to perform better. The 3M organization
provides an environment where the employees get to choose their developmental paths
freely. Employees can even seek transfer to other departments if they can provide better
