Clinical issue
Nurses often face clinical issues while dealing with older patients with dementia. One of the
most common clinical issues is non-cooperation of patients with dementia.
Application of the 6Cs theory of nursing to address the issue
6Cs theory
6Cs theory of nursing helps in addressing clinical issues. Application of this theory to engage
patients in treatment process are mentioned below,
Care: This factor is the core of solving this problem that can help to improve the condition of
the person. As opined by Chambers & Ryder (2018), caring helps to increase satisfaction rate
of patients and they receive proper care that they expect. The patient suffering from dementia
was not able to share proper information and non-cooperate with care providers and
sometimes become aggressive. Proper care and comfort can help to relieve them from
suffering.
Compassion: Compassion allows nurses to understand the perspective of dementia patients.
According to Cummings, Sheen, Kinsella, Peate & Alexander (2015), nurses need to put
themselves in the situation of the patient to understand their perspective. It helps to identify
an effective solution to engage dementia patients in the clinical process. Sympathetic pity for
the suffering of the patient must be there in nurses while dealing with dementia patients. This
approach may help nurses to make patients believe that nurses are their well-wishers and they
understand their issues.
Courage: For handling patients suffering from advanced stages of dementia, it is essential for
nurses to have proper courage. Courage can help them to do the right thing for concerned
patient. As stated by Mackintosh-Franklin (2016), courage helps care providers to gain
personal strength and archives a vision to innovate new ways of working.

Competence: Competence is the ability of nurses to provide the best care to patients
efficiently. According to the Code of conduct (COD), nurses are liable to promote health and
wellbeing. Competency in providing best care helps nurses to engage dementia patients in the
process of treatment. Though this disease is incurable, competent nurses can make patients
understand that their cooperation can help in ensuring their wellbeing. As stated by Solai,
Schultz & Kunik (2015), level of competence in nurses can be improved by training
programs. Improvement in personal and professional skills can help nurses to be competent
while dealing with a dementia patient.
Communication: This is the most vital part of this providing care and solving the clinical
issue of non-cooperation by patient suffering from dementia. Communication is considered as
the most critical point to create successful caring relationships. Moreover, communication
can also help to mitigate the issue through effective team working. It is an essential code of
conduct for nurses to listen to problems of the patient and communicate properly to motivate
the patient. Thus, evidence-based treatment can be provided and a good relationship with the
patient can be established which can help to increase cooperation level.
Commitment: according to code of conduct in nursing, this is the cornerstone of their
performance. For improving care to patient and increase experience of customers,
commitment is necessary. Main vision of a nurse should be to improve the condition of
patient and providing relief from suffering. Remaining committed to duties and taking actions
according to planned strategies can help to gain trust of patient and thus cooperation level can
increase.
