Relevant program from the website and description of the program chosen
Dandenong and district aborigines cooperative Limited has implemented various programs
in order to enhance the health outcome of indigenous Australians. The program which has been
selected for the present study is tackling indigenous health promotion and educational program.
In this the team is been engaged in developing various workshops who will provide the
education related to tobacco handling situations. The main aim of organising the workshop is to
raise awareness about the harm caused by tobacco among the indigenous people. The workshop
is been organized at community gatherings, carnivals, youth groups and event schools. There are
various topics on which education is been provided during the workshop like smoking during
pregnancy, The danger caused by shisha and e-cigars, the poison consisting in cigars and how
smoking has an adverse impact on the human body. The services are been kept free for the
people of Torres Strait island in Australia. They have been tailored to analyse the needs and
problems faced by the client group. These workshops are been implemented so that the health
outcome of indigenous people can be improved and no inequities among these people exists.
Specialist appointments are also been provided to help the community. They are promoting equal
treatment to Torres Strait island people. This can help them in reducing down the use of tobacco.
They have also made the fun engagement games and entertaining props so that the educational
services provided by the institute become more interesting. These props assists them in attracting
more indigenous Australians towards their workshops and stalls.
Chosen program helps facilitate access and equity for ABORIGINAL and TORRES Strait
ISLANDER Communities
Tackling indigenous health promotion and educational program helps in facilitating the equity
for aboriginals and Torres Strait islander communities. This workshop can assist them in
reducing down the usage of tobacco so that there health outcome will be increased. They will
also not be able to face chronic disease which is caused because of smoking cigars. The equities
is been existed as this workshops are been organised for free. They can provide huge benefit to
the indigenous people living in Australia. The institution is also assisting the patients with all
forms of transportation so that they can come and visit the workshop and also this can support in
enhancing the health outcome and reducing down the inequities which exist with the indigenous
Australians. The workers are also been involved in making a trusting relationship with

aboriginals so that better health care services can be provided to them. This will also help the
workers and nursing staff in analysing the main problem which has been faced by the indigenous
Australians. The support is been provided to aboriginal’s community so that they can prevent
and address the ill health outcomes caused because of the consumption of tobacco. The
assessment is also been provided with the help of group and individual program. This program is
mainly been conducted in order to enhance the health outcome of the Torres and Strait islanders
and also to reduce down the inequities faced by them. They also provide education related to
analyse the early signs and symptoms of the other chronic disease. Referrals are also been
provided for the same.

Role of the community health nurse in the tobacco handling program is really important and
it will also assist in enhancing the access and equity for the aboriginals. Nurses will be involved
in targeting the group who is majorly affected by the problem of smoking. The responsibility of
nurse is to provide education to indigenous people of Australia about the ill effects of smoking
and the adverse impact they can face because of smoking it. They will also be involved in
providing education about the various diseases which can be caused because of smoking tobacco.
Nurses will also be involved in prodding them knowledge related to early signs and symptoms of
disease which can be caused because of consuming tobacco. This will assist the institution and
nurses in enhancing the health outcome of indigenous Australians. This will also help them in
reducing down the inequities and preventing down the various diseases which can be caused
because of the smoking and consuming tobacco. It is really important so that health outcome can
be improved.

What would be my role as a student nurse at this service to promote equity and access to health
care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples?
In the tobacco handling program organised by the Dandenong and district aborigines
cooperative Limited, my role as the student nurse will be to raise awareness related to harms
caused by tobacco to people. I will also be involved in providing education to those indigenous
Australians who have been addicted to use the tobacco and smoking shisha or e-cigars. I will

also be engaged in providing these services to the Torres and Strait islander’s people free of cost,
so that not equity exists while providing the health care services. This will help me as a student
nurse in enhancing the health outcome of people and also preventing the illness which can be
caused because of consuming tobacco. I will also be engaged in delivering local services and
programs aimed at educating and preventing the high prevalence of chronic disease which is
been caused by the smoking of tobacco. As a student nurse I will also be involved in knowing
the needs and demands of the community group so that it becomes easier to provide them better
services. This will also help me in making trusting relationship with indigenous people who are
visiting the stall. As a student nurse I will also make sure that while providing Strait islanders
with services no unethical practices are been followed. This will also assist them in accessing
equity and also I will ensure that fair treatment has been provided to them. I will also be engaged
in making the fun props so that more Strait islanders will attend the workshop which has been
organised by the institution. This will also assist in enhancing the health outcome of the people
who are suffering and facing disease because of consuming and smoking tobacco.
What impact does my role have on promoting equity and access to health care for Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander peoples?
My role as the student nurse has the huge impact on promoting equity and access to health
care services for the aboriginals Torres Strait islander people. I will be engaged in making sure
that every indigenous Australian know about the services and programs been offered by our
institution. I will also be engaged in providing them with free workshop services whether they
are individual or group, so that they can be saved from the development of chronic disease
because of tobacco. My responsibility as the nurse is to provide education to indigenous people
of Australia about the ill effects of smoking and the adverse impact they can face because of
smoking tobacco. I will also ensure that fair services are been provided to them so that there
health outcome can be improved. This can also assist me in providing better care services and I
can be engaged in making better bond with people who are suffering because of smoking
tobacco. I will also make them aware about how smoking can have adverse impact on
pregnancy. This can help me in reducing down the use of cigars and shisha. It will also enhance
the health outcome of Torres and strait islanders.

What is my intended approach in caring for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to
improve access and equity for my future nursing practice?
The health promotion program is been made available to all Torres and Strait islanders who lives
in Southern metropolitan. The aim is to increase awareness related to harms caused by smoking
and consuming tobacco. My intended approach in the program will be holistic in nature, I will
make sure that safe care is been provided to all people who have developed chronic disease
because of smoking tobacco. I will also be engaged in providing them with educational support
to those who are interested in increasing their knolwdge so that there health and well being is
promoted. I will also make sure that equal access to workshops is been provided to all Toress and
