“Does assessments increase a student’s academic achievement?”
The systematic way of collecting and analysing data for the purpose of education is
known as educational research. This involves various aspects of the education like teaching
methods, training teachers, student learning, class room dynamics and other process related to
education (Bush, Bell & Middlewood, 2019).
Role of Education Research:
The aim of the educational research is to gather data regarding the subject, such that
researcher can test their theories with other fellow researchers.
From the first topic, that is “What is “Good” Education Research?” by Karl Hostetler, a
‘good’ education research is the one which not just a matter of techniques and procedures for
understanding people, but also have effective goals and results. According to Hostetler, it is duty
of a researcher to serve for the benefit of the people. All though it is the duty of a researcher to
think of the betterment, it is often seen that the research work is limited to the methodology and
the analysis of the data (Connolly, James & Fertig, 2019). Questioned were raised, how as a
researcher one will consider working with the people they are studying about. Some of the
researchers in this case follow the qualitative and quantitative method of analysis of the data.
Using these technology one can successfully gather all necessary details regarding a research
such that a clear idea can be generated about the subject matter. The ultimate-goal of an
educational researcher is to consider the well-being of an individual by serving them
(McCrudden, Marchand & Schutz, 2019). The motto of the good research can only be served
when good judgement skills and better responsiveness can be developed (John Dewey, 1909).
The ability of the students to stand for something results in conducting a ‘good’ research.

According to Dewey, a fine and strong character helps in developing a person’s conscious which
help them becoming a good researcher and conduct researches for serving people.
As per the second paper ‘erosion’ of trust is identified in the educational sectors. In both
high schools and schools, the fixation of the standards, accountability and measurements have
resulted in the narrowing down of the norms. The increased managerialism and increase in use of
the commercialism in the school has reduced the faith of the students and the others on the
organization. With the help of the educational research, observations can be made which will
help in the enhancement of trust.
What interests me as a researcher?
As a student, I think, there are many things which remains unanswered to a student. In
the field of the education, developing knowledge is important. With this research, I will be able
to understand the requirements of an educational field better. By doing so I will be able to gain
academic experiences in the field. Research helps in development of the critical thinking and
developing personal knowledge in different areas (Hayashi, Abib & Hoppen, 2019). Research is
essential for student as it helps in gathering knowledge in details for everything they are opting
for. Moreover, by undertaking surveys and interviews for gathering information helps in
enrichment of knowledge in that particular subject. This is the reason I have considered myself to
undertake a research in the field of education (Houser, 2019).
As an educational researcher, I will be able to find solution to the several questions that
remained unanswered. All the knowledge gathered goes in vein if it is not applied in correct way,
considering a real life scenario. There are numerous problems that arises in the classrooms which
I think would be able to solve by conducting good research on the field of the education. The

professional learning skill can be developed with the help of the research. The change in the
assessment and pedagogy can be implemented which will help both the student and the teacher
equally. My reason for undertaking the research is to implement efficient changes in the field of
education. And I think, the educational field can be enhanced when the problems in the field are
analysed and steps are taken to improve it.

Some of the questions in the research field includes the following:
1. Are the students actually benefited from the assessments process in the education system?
2. What can be done to improve the assessment process in the contemporary education
system?
