Enhancing Academic Performance: Text-to-Speech for Visual Impairment

This literature review examines the effectiveness of text-to-speech technologies as assistive tools for visually impaired children in primary schools. The research investigates how these technologies, including computers, smartphones, and tablets, can enhance academic performance. It explores various driving forces, such as the application of these technologies, and addresses the question of their effectiveness based on studies published within the last five years (2012 onwards). The review includes nine studies, highlighting the positive impacts of assistive technology, particularly text-to-speech, on learning outcomes for visually impaired students. Key findings emphasize the crucial role of text-to-speech in helping these children access and understand academic content, with some studies employing ABAB methodologies to assess the technology's effects. The review concludes by summarizing different authors' perspectives on the advantages and benefits of text-to-speech, recommending strategies for children to effectively utilize these technologies.
