COMM1020: Reading Strategies and Article Summaries

This assignment analyzes three articles using various reading strategies. The student details the article's title, author, publication details, and subject matter. The student classifies each source as academic or non-academic and identifies the intended audience. For each article, the student describes the reading strategies employed, including speed reading, stop-jot-thought reading, and comprehension monitoring, and reflects on their effectiveness. A. Devers, C. E., Misangyi, V. F., & Gamache, D. L. (2014). Editors' comments: On the
future of publishing management theory.
1. The topic of the article is the management theory publishing and its future.
2. Cynthia Dever, Vilmes Misangyi and Daniel Gamache are the authors of the article and
have explored the ways of publishing management theory in future.
3. The article is 8 pages long and was first published in 2014 online.
4. The subject matter of the article is the exploration of management theory and the future
of its practice (Devers, Misangyi, & Gamache, 2014).
5. This is a non-academic article as it is directly targeting editors, informing them about
article publishing.
6. The audience member targeted by the article is knowledge. This means that the authors
intended the article to provide knowledge to the audience, which they can apply when
writing and publishing articles. I am a member of the readership as I look for knowledge

In this strategy, I read the article as if scheming and looking for main ideas from its
content (Lei, Rhinehart, Howard, & Cho, 2010). This helped me get the clue of the contents of
the article.
Reading strategy two: stop-jot-thought reading
This one involves going through one paragraph after the other stopping at intervals to
write down key concepts and then visualizing what the author wants one to learn.
B. Cunningham, G. B. (2013). Theory and theory development in sport management. Sport

1. The topic of article is theory development and sport management.
2. George Cunningham is the author and explores the ways of developing theory in science
and management of sports.
3. It is a five page long article first published in 2011 online.
4. Its subject matter is finding and exploring theory that is missing in the various literature
related to sport management (Cunningham, 2013).
5. It is an non-academic article which seeks to help practitioners understand more about
theory management in managing sports.
6. The author targets the readership member of audience. This means that the author wrote
the article to be just read and understood by the audience.
7. The tone used is a serious one and though the language is simple, the author explores the
topic deeply.
8. He has employed the argument rhetorical mode to elaborate his points.

9. The structure of the article is in-depth analysis of the topic with few subheadings. I used
the stop-jot method of reading to understand the content. After reading once, I found it
very interesting. I took five minutes to read it.

1. The topic of this article is the craft of developing theory articles including variety and
similarity in the academic management.
2. Smithy Fulmer is the author of the article and he wishes to help learners about theory and
how to develop a better theoretical article.
3. It is a four page article first published online in 2012.
4. Its subject matter is how to craft and write good theory articles for learners and other
stakeholders (Smithey, 2012).
5. It is an academic article seeking to make the learners understand the difference between
theory and general articles.
6. The author has targeted the knowledge aspect of audience and he seeks to make them
understand the difference in theory and general articles.

7. The author employs a formal and serious tone in presenting his point of view. He wants
the audience to get the facts and apply them in practice
8. He has employed the description rhetorical mode to achieve his objective by using few
subheadings and analyzing facts under them.
9. The author uses a topic and analysis structure in the article to make up his points.
10. I applied the stop-jot reading strategy as the content is quite a bit complex. The language
is very simple and it took me 4 minutes to read the article. The content is interesting
though especially to learners.
Reading strategy one: speed reading
In this strategy, I read through the article as if scheming and looking for main ideas from
its content. It is time saving while reading though the complex content is not understood well
(Hsieh, & Dwyer, 2009).
Reading strategy two: comprehension monitoring
This is a form of reading that involves deep evaluation of content. It involves going
through the content and internalizing what is covered in the article.
