INTRODUCTION
Goals setting help to increase the level of motivation and encourage to achieve
impossible aims. The present study is based on importance of setting goals, it explains some
essential short and long term goals for university students. This report evaluates some methods
students can use to improve how much they recall new information.
MAIN BODY
Why it is essential to set goals and determine some important short & long term goals for
university students
Importance-
Goals refer to the object or aim towards which person is directed, it is an idea of desired
or future results that individual commits, plan and envision to achieve. To level athletes,
achievers in all fields and successful businesses people all set goals which is very important for
them. By setting goals people get short and long term motivation, it focuses acquisition of
knowledge and supports to manage resources as well as time so that individual can make the
most of its life. Goal setting is very important as it helps to achieve unbelievable results that
provide benefits in human life (Vroland-Nordstrand and et.al., 2018). By setting clearly and
sharp defined goals, anyone can take and measure pride in achievement of those goals, and they
will see forwards success in what might antecedently have seemed a long pointless grind. There
are different reasons behind setting goals and why it is important. For example, people set goals
because it creates a clear road map for better success or growth, it helps target towards which
people point their life, it gives starting base and destination to reach and help to see where person
are going and what modification they need to make. To achieve personal and professional desire,
goal setting is important as it helps to stay committed with need and plans for it. Setting goal is 7
areas of life like physical, social, mental, spiritual, relational, professional and financial, that
empowers person to live their vision with strength (Wieland, 2017). Furthermore, goal setting is
also essential because it helps to identify prioritize and direct people to focus on what is
significant. There are many advantages to always having a clear set of goals to look at. For
instance, setting goals support sustain that momentum in life, helps trigger new behaviours and
guide people focus.
Goals are divided into three groups, mastery goal, performance approach and
performance avoidance goals. First goal is a goal someone set to complete or master something

such as students will score higher in next semester. Second goal is where people try to do much
better than their peers, this kind of aim could be a goal to getting better performance review. The
last one is, performance avoidance goal, it is about when someone tried to avoid doing wrong
that there partners such as a goal to avoid negative response.
Short term goals for university students-
Short term goals is something people want to do in near future, which means today, this
year, this month or even this week (Blouin-Hudon, Gaudreau and Gareau, 2016). It is all about
desire to accomplish and achieved soon, more over short term goal is aim people can gain in 1
year or less. For example, getting better and higher grades on next project is short term goal
identified for university students, that help to develop their better professional career. Create a
consistent study schedule and understanding the other topics along with existing one are few
examples of short term goals, that students have to achieve.
Long term goals for university students-
As the name shows, long term goals take longer time to achieve, it includes different
smaller short term goals (Muenks and et.al., 2017). With this, university students will think about
what they hope to gain by the end of graduation or by school year such as passing a course,
graduating on time, achieving a particular grade or want to do job in highly reputed
organizations. Students before completing their graduation set goal that help in the future, for
example getting into well reputed college in the world.
Approaches students used to improve how much they remember new information
Use mnemonic devices-
It is learning techniques that aids data or information retention in human memory for
longer. Mnemonic devices is the best method used by university students that help to remember
new information related to their subject effectively. It helps human brain to recall as well as
encode significance information, which they can use in the future. Method of Loci is one of the
mnemonic device which dates back to ancient Greek times, creating it one of the older method of
memorizing people known of. Students go through a list of concepts or words needing
memorization and consist each work with one of their locations. They must go in order so that
people will capable to retrieve all info in the future (Schwartz, Tsang and Blair, 2016).

Many students benefit greatly from visualizing information they study for longer, by
paying attention to charts, words and other content in books students effectively remember and
improve information recognizant ability. Students always illustrate difficult words with different
propositions that help remember information effectively, and they can keep it for long with the
help of visualizing concepts (Bakken, 2017).
Organize space-
To improve memory for long, students need to be capable to focus. Any kind of
distraction will make barriers to remember new information, so make assure that space is clear of
clutter and has all resources students need for study time because it helps to save time and reduce
chance of distraction. Before start learning and understanding information, students keep
everything accessible and make space clear, that help to do not distract mind anywhere. They can
keep all the items while understanding new info, that remember it for long and used at any
situation when information is required.
CONCLUSION
From above analysis, it has been concluded that setting goal in professional and personal
life is very important for people as it help to get better results and increase motivational level
rather than before. By setting goals students get many benefits as it will give them as sense of
purpose of life, personal satisfaction and provide clear direction towards success.
