INTRODUCTION
Personal development involves set of activities that person uses to enhance their skills
and qualities while considering individuals aims and goals in life. It helps in developing talents
and potentials, facilitate employability, improves quality of life and contributes to know the
dreams and aspirations. This report is prepared in the context of understanding the concept of
personal and professional development, value of short term, medium term and long term goals
along with the value of Personal Development Plan with the structure of it.
1. Personal and Professional Development
Personal and Professional Development of single person help in organization growth.
Self-managed learning helps in both personal and professional development. Self-managed
learning is referring personal learning abilities (Sala, and Gobet, 2017). Personal development is
and activity that improve awareness and identify talent and passion of a person and help them to
achieve their goal. Professional development is also linked with personal development but in
professional development person is focused on organization growth and development. It is also
effected by person’s behaviour and skills. In academics personal and professional development
both are important and play major role, both student and teacher personal development is
necessary for professional or overall academic development. Professional development includes
personal development and performance evaluation of academics or organizations. It also
provides support to student and teachers for competence and performance. Professional
development link students’ academic performance and school improvement plans. Provides
trainings and development direction to teachers for development of school. In academics
personal and professional development are depending on various things such as data driven
planning, instructional delivery, assessment, learning environment, communication, student
achievement and academic progress and professionalism etc. (Kroll, and Dussias, 2017)

2. Short term Goals
Short term goals are which a person wants to achieve as soon as possible. These goals are
building blocks for long term goals. It is directly or indirectly connected with medium term and
long term goals. Short term goals are ‘Short’ purpose they are fill the gap between what a person
is and want they to be. Short term goals help to achieve long term goals. It also helps to stay
motivated and focus towards purpose of life and bigger goals. In academic’s short term goals
helps to individual student for their result and performance. It also helps them to check their
progress. Short term goals are important for different purposes such as to create effective
strategies, it provides feedback, it helps to kill procrastination, it also help in focus towards work,
and it inspires and motivate to achieve long term goals.
Example of Short Term Goals:
Build a Morning Routine: This short term goal helps in stay positive and healthy. It also helps to
maintain discipline in life. This habit also lines up work schedule. Morning walk, getting up
early, daily make to-do task list, healthy breakfast, meditation, morning exercise, etc. are help to
build effective morning routine (Williams, 2016). In Academic’s this short term goal helps
students to build good habits and these habits impact on their results.
Explore Something New Every Day: This goal helps to try something new every day. By this
habit student can try to learn new skills every day or they can learn new terms and words to
develop their knowledge and communication skills. By this habit they can train their brain to
learn new things and information easily. Daily learning new things motivate students and inspire
them to do something new.
Improve Communication Skills: Good communication helps in personal and professional
development. This also helps in presentation skills, public speaking, group discussion, team
presentation etc. In academics communication skills play important role for teachers as well as
students. By using communication skills teacher can easily explain any topic in class, it will help
students to understand and learn easily. This habit also helps in problem solving.

3. Medium Term Goals.
Medium term goals lay between short term goals and long term goals. It helps to stay
motivated and it is necessary to complete these goals to achieve long term goals. Medium term
goals take long period approx. 1 to 5 years. These not much affected by short term goals but if
short goals are completed then it will easy to complete these goals also. To complete these goals
a person must focus on different features such as focus on research and development, avoid
disturbance and distractions, effective management of tasks, use technical guidance and
collaboration to achieve goals. In medium term goals procedures are followed. These procedures
also ensure that the problems by short term goals were not completed did not repeat (Hirashiki,
2019). Medium term goals help person or organization to achieve different long period objective
and goals.
Example of Medium Term Goals:
Learn New Languages: This goal helps to learn different languages such as Spanish, English,
Chinese etc. and it helps a person to understand different person’s thoughts. It will help in
effective communication. This will also help to explain thoughts and points efficiently. This will
also help in problem solving and in communication with other countries people.
Create Multiple Income Stream: If a person loves its job then also they are looking for different
income sources. In this goal person try to create multiple income stream so that they can
financially free. It will help them to achieve success in life, and they also provide jobs for
earning to different peoples. By completing this goal, they can help needy ones. In this goal
person find side business or partnership in friend’s business to create multiple income sources.
Get Professional Certificate: This goal helps a person to get success in job industry. Companies
hire employees based on their education, skills and knowledge. This goal help student to get
good job in famous companies and MNC. Professional certificate will show enthusiasm toward
that stream and work, and they also give the best result to a person. It develops skills,
knowledge, experience, confidence etc. It also helps in personality development.

4. Value of long term goals.
Long term goals can be defined as the things that can be used to achieve more into the future. It
requires a good amount of time and daily or continuous planning to reach at the ultimate goal.
(Lejeune, Beausaert and Raemdonck, 2018). Long term goals includes many small term goals
that are used to achieve the big things in the life. There are generally three types of long term
goals: Career goals, Financial goals and Personal goals.
Career goals:These are the systematic statements which explains the profession of an individual
which he will be going to pursue throughout his career. Identifying career goals is a most
important part in everyone's life. Defining career goals helps to come with effective action plan.
Financial goals: these goals sets the big picture of how to spend and save money. (Shaheen and
Hameed, 2020). Some financial goals that students must have in their life involves investing in
something, finishing the college with no debt, learn a bankable skill, building credit, have an
emergency fund.
Personal goals: Personal goals involves goals of an individual like travelling the world, listen
actively, improving the body language, not procrastinating, finding purpose in life, waking up
early, etc.
Long term goals are of most value as they give an internal compass, more purpose and drive and
evaluate the values. Some personal example of long term goals involves establishing business,
getting a degree, and learning a new skill (Utting, 2017). Establishing own business requires long
term planning in relation with selection of good name for business, obtaining licence, getting a
good advisor for business, creating a credit account for business, developing various resources,
etc.
Getting a degree is also an example of long term goal as it requires lots of time, energy, studies
and money. For example: Getting PH. D degree needs lots of efforts. First to learn the
application process, find suitable university, then lots of research process in studies, conferences,
and many more things. Learning new skill or creativity is an example of long term goal as it
requires lots and lots of practice on continuous basis, as it is already said practice make a man
perfect.
5. Value of Personal Development Plan.
Personal development plan is the process of setting the goals, analysing strengths and
weaknesses for self-improvement, growths and development. It is a written document showing

self reflection and improvement along with detailed action plan that helps in achieving personal,
financial and career goal (Shakhsi‐Niaei and Abuei‐Mehrizi, 2020). The elements of Personal
development plans involves a clear vision where an individual want to go in life, a very good
understanding of skills, priority level of each area, how to enhance skills or qualities. The
process of personal development includes: first and foremost step is to set the goals and
objectives, then identify the strengths and weaknesses, analyse the other options available,
thorough research, stay focused till the goals are achieved, be patient and don't get demotivated.
Importance of Personal Development Plan:
Personal development plans are important and beneficial in many ways for individual who wants
to achieve goals in life. It makes self-aware, gives sense of direction, improves focus and
effectiveness, give more motivation and productivity, gives more fulfilling relationships (Radu,
2017).
Personal development plan helps in identifying the areas in which improvement is required,
gives a vision for achieving the things, boost the motivation to take better decisions, improves
effectiveness.
It gives a systematic framework to identify strengths and weaknesses and improves exiting skills
and capabilities.
Personal development Plan gives the sense of direction by visualizing what an individual want in
life.
Helps in mastering the goal setting by incorporating both short term and long term achievable
goals.
The main motive or objective of Personal Development Plan is continuous personal growth,
capitalizing potential opportunities.

From this report it is concluded that short term goals, medium term goals and long term goals
plays a crucial role in achieving the goals or objectives. Short term goals can be achieved
between 6 months to 12 months. Medium term goals can be achieved between 1 and 3 years and
long term goals can be achieved in more than 3 years. Personal development plans is the
blueprint showing self reflection and improvements along with detailed action plan that helps in
achieving career goals, financial goals and personal goals. It gives sense of direction, motivation
and confidence to achieve goals in systematic way or manner.
