1. A description of your data (What is it? Where does it come from? What area is
it focussing on?).
The graph is based on the data showing the average usage of the UK gas per day in 2016
and the percentage of usage on natural gas in the UK in comparison to other countries in
the EU for the years 2015 and 2016. The data was collected from a report by Marcus Leroux
(2017), named ‘UK’s lack of gas security ‘is storing up trouble’, in The Times.
2. A summary on what the data shows in general.
It is seen that the in 2016, power generation sector consumed the largest
proportion of the UK gas on a typical day with 36.2%, followed by the domestic
sector which includes households and that consumed 34.7%. The industrial
sector consumed much lesser proportion of the UK gas with only 18.5% and the
least amount of UK gas was used by the commercial sector with only 10.6%.
Among the other EU members, the UK holds the 2nd position in the consumption
of natural gas in 2015 and 2016, preceded by only Germany.
3. One or two areas of the data looked at in detail and an explanation of why you
think they are significant. The important trends and differences/comparisons in
the areas you have chosen.
From the data, it is seen that the gas usage has increased in the UK in 2016 from that of
2015, which is a concern, especially after the Brexit referendum. UK will lose access to the
single market of EU and imports will be costlier, putting a pressure on the forex reserves of
the country. Leroux (2017) also highlighted in the report that the gas storage capacity of
the UK is very low compared to rest of the Europe and hence, with the rising consumption of
natural gas on an average in all types of sectors, it must increase its gas production and
also focus on renewable energy sources for a cost effective long term solution.
4. Possible explanations for what the data is showing (remember to reference
wider research to back your ideas up).
The rise in the natural gas consumption over the years in the UK was shown in another
article ‘Energy Consumption in the UK (ECUK) 1970 to 2018’, by the Department for
Business, Energy & Industrial strategy (2019). The chart is provided below, and this also
shows that the consumption level is very low in transport, industry and services, which
supports the graph provided above.

It indicates the growth of the economy, resulting in increased demand for gas in the
domestic sector.
5. A recommendation for further action that could arise from this data.
It can be recommended that as the storage capacity for gas is low for UK and the level of
usage is high, it should invest more in the exploration and production of natural gas and
reduce the dependency on the gas imports, especially from the EU countries when the
Brexit happens.

Along with the continued drive to bring down costs, that was estimated to have
created more than £10bn of free cash flow.
But it said investors "will continue to favour a conservative outlook" because of

What did you learn from delivering a presentation, was that more energy and confident, my feeling
during presentation was good has I have a fear of public speaking, the way I overcome it was the
