The association of academic stress with the overall mental health of the students can be seen
to have strong correlations with each other. Over – exposure to academic stress is a common
phenomenon that can be seen in almost all student. At the same time, there have been
recurring connected cases where the students have reported to suffer from cases of mental
health issues like depression and anxiety. An increase in academic stress can therefore lead to
the development of these associated issues amongst students.

In his paper, Kumaraswami (2013) explores the connection between Academic Stress,
anxiety and depression amongst college students, expanding upon the connected nature of the
three elements. He states that the stress caused due to academic pressure is a genuine stress as
it connects to the students’ learning outcomes and future professional developments as well,
thereby increasing the risks of temporary or permanent development of anxiety and
depression.
