Active listening micro-skills
Communication is an essential element in health and social care and listening
during communicating is one of the crucial aspects for effective and efficient
communication. Active listening is the tool that ensures how the connection
between the speaker and the listener is well established and the messages
being conveyed are properly understood by both the ends. According to the
principle 3.3 of the Nurses code of conduct it is essential for the nurses to
develop the ability to listen actively and effectively while communicating
(Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia., 2018). Certain aspects in this
scenario revealed that the nurse practice active listening appropriately. It was
evident when the nurse heard every statement by Joel with appropriate pause,
repeated her question when Joel was not able to understand, presented the
conversation using eye contact and developed a sense of openness and
connection while the conversation was ongoing. Initially Joel was not very
interested while talking to the nurse and also was occupied on his phone when
nurse asked something but as the nurse showed empathy and respect and
using active listening micro-skills Joel reverted by with showing interest and
respect. The answers Joel was responding with mainly concentrated on yes or
no initially but as the nurse developed a rapport using active listening skills Joel
also started to open up and communicate well with her. The active listening
skills displayed by the nurse surely had significant impact on the overall
interview as it helped the patient to engage more into the conversation and
extract more and fruitful information from Joel that otherwise would not have
been achieved. Also it was evident that Joel became comfortable
communicating with the nurse and also shared his experiences of treatment
and this helped the overall process.
