Aim: This section will mainly introduce the topic for research and define the specific aim and
objective of research. For the research topic ‘activity based learning increases acquisition of the
second language’, the aim of the research proposal will be to investigate whether activity based
learning increases acquisition of second language among nursing students in Australian college
or not.
Background: This section will mainly give background information related to the research topic
and define why research in the topic area is important. The information related to existing
knowledge on the topic will help to identify limitation in past strategies used by students to
acquire second language and introduce the potential of the new intervention (activity based
learning) in promoting language acquisition for student nurse. As the main purpose of a research
proposal is to convince others than the topic suggested is worthy of investigation, this section
will also justify the need to conduct research on the topic by explaining the significance and
benefits of research in this area (Blaikie & Priest, 2019). Giving details on expected outcomes
from the research can also justify the value of the topic under investigation.
Preliminary data: This section will mainly define past research designs that were used to
conduct research on the topic and highlight flaws or gaps that made further investigation on the
topic necessary. In case of the topic related to activity based learning, the purpose will be to
identify previous research design that was used to analyze the benefit of activity based learning
for students. The current research proposal will focus on identifying whether appropriate
research has been done in Australian setting or not and justify the need to investigate about the
topic for Australian colleges.

2RESEARCH PROPOSAL
Research design and method:
This section of the research proposal will define the research methodology and research
design that will be used to carry the investigation. The first strategy will be to classify
methodology according to qualitative or quantitative research design. The selection of
appropriate research methodology will depend on purpose of research and gaps found in past
research design. If the purpose is to explore perception of participants related to activity based
learning, then qualitative research methodology will be used. If the focus is on obtaining
objective data related to the topic, then quantitative research methodology will be used
(AKOTIA, Ahmed & OPOKU, 2016). Another vital part that will be covered in the research
proposal includes the relevant research paradigm or research philosophy for the research.
Explanation regarding this aspect is important because it defines the philosophical underpinnings
of research and the philosophical orientation that has been taken to construct meaning from the
research data (Kivunja & Kuyini, 2017).
After the description regarding research design, the research proposal will define the
sample population and the setting where research will be done. In case of the topic selected, the
sample will included nursing students and the setting for research will include college in
Australia. The methodology section will also define appropriate research protocol and research
instruments that will be used to collect data. The validity and reliability of the tool will be
discussed too. Effort will also be made to identify possible limitations in the research design and
alternative approach that can be used to overcome the limitations in research.
