As a child, whenever asked, “What do you want to become in future when you grow up?”
my response time after time was “a veterinarian”. As I became older I discovered that I am
highly allergic to animal making the childhood dream fade. Nevertheless, my fascination for
medicine remained stuck; leading me nursing. My journey started in 2009 when I attended my
first nursing class and after four years I graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Science Nursing.
I was the first person from my family to receive a college degree. My family was so proud but,
most importantly I was proud of myself. Nursing school had ended but, in reality, education in
nursing had not come to an end. Nursing is an extremely challenging career. Promoting,
resorting, and maintaining the health of patients and community at large is quite important. I get
flooded with new knowledge and challenges in every of my practice.
I always push and challenge myself to be the best health care provider who provides
high-quality care. Obtaining a BSN landed me to my dream job at Penn Medicine and also
opened many doors and opportunities for me to expand my career. It has been five years since I
became a nurse and the idea of pursuing a Master’s degree has been one of primary dreams. I
needed to advance my knowledge and skills in regards to nursing.
Researching Nurse Practitioners roles and duties in the health care system confirmed my
decision to further the career. It is important to note that Advance Practitioners focus on patient-
centered quality care and have to be autonomous in the decision-making of their patients. Nurse
practitioners focus on the overall wellbeing of patients. They also educate, diagnose, treat as well
as prevent diseases (Wager, Lee & Glaser, 2017). Becoming an Adult Gerontology Nurse
Practitioner gives me more independence as a practitioner, working alongside or independently
from a physician. Notably, the most important part of nursing according to me is the formation of

patient-nurse relationship. I do not look at my patients as a Medical Registered Nurse. I truly
enjoy listening and understanding a person’s life, the stories that made them who they are today.
Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner would allow me to care for my patients on a long-
term perspective. Seeing the long term progression of a disease would give an insight and
knowledge to handle difficult situations. On a similar note, educating persons on lifestyle
changes takes time and requires patience (Brom, Salsberry & Graham, 2018). Working in
different facilities has offered me various skills which have enabled me to become a well-
rounded nurse. I have learned that to hospice patients require doing everything possible to make
them as well as family members comfortable. Making a stranger adapt to the healthcare
environment is one of the primary practices I have been able to successfully conduct. All of these
different areas of nursing have provided me with tremendous communication skills, allowing me
to bond with my patients and gain their trust. I strive to maintain a good rapport with my patient
and their families.
I have continuously opted to improve myself and become a leader in my community.
Villanova is my sole choice in advancing my academic career. Having been so blessed to reside
in Philadelphia my entire life and having the opportunity to attend the best university in the
nation motivated me to further my studies. Having been raised a Catholic, attending Catholic
grade school and continuing to receiving my nursing degree in a Catholic University, Gwynedd-
Mercy University gives the prowess to help the needy.
