This paper is a response to a peer’s post on two consumer health engagement technology
that can be used to deliver care. It evaluates the description provided regarding the use of two
health engagement technology and brings forward more clarifying question to further elicit the
discussion.
After reviewing the peer’s post, one of the health app that been found useful to improve
delivery care is the Mayo clinic app. The app has many useful features like appointment
calendars, lab results, medication profile, immunization and allergy details and messaging
features. Any patients with medical record number can easily request for appointment or get
medical advices for sinus infection without visiting any health clinic (Mayo Foundation for
Medical Education and Research 2017). The peer’s post also proposed the possibility of using
the Mayo clinic app for anesthesia providers so that the app could remind patients about fasting
guidelines and other procedure needed before the surgery. The peer’s post mentioned about
changes in feature of the app to enhance the usability of the app for different population group.
The strength of the peer’s post is that looked at way to increases the utilization of app among
anesthesia providers and by proposing new features, it showed understanding about ways to
increases the subscriber of the app in the future. However, the limitation of the post is that it
considered about other barriers in using the app such as improving user’s experience with future
portals (Baldwin et al., 2017). It considered about language translation feature, however the
approach to make the portal simplified was not provided. Hence, the question coming up from
the discussion is that ‘What kind of changes in portal is needed to ensure that patients can easily
understand information and adopt them in their daily life?’.
Another health engagement technology that was discussed in the post included the
Quitplan website and app. The app is funded by the state of Minnesota after receiving funds from

tobacco industry and the non-profit organization provide tobacco cessation support to citizens
(ClearWay Minnesota, 2018). This section of the discussed also looked at ways to enhance the
usability of the app for anesthesia provide. The post proposed the idea of using the app in the
pre-operative evaluation period so as to give education to patient regarding the smoking
cessation process (Duchman et al., 2015). The proposal that has been provided is useful as
smoking is found to be one factor that increases risk of complication in patients with surgery.
Hence, from this perceptive, the idea given in the post is commendable as this would be an
innovative approach to improve health and decrease post-operative complication in patient.
However, the point that is missing in the post is how unique is the content in the app to make a
difference to the target patient group. Therefore, the peer’s post needs to analyze how the content
is engaging and motivating for audience to quit smoking. More discussion in this area can
convince stakeholders regarding promoting the use of the device in surgical setting.
