Advancement in the medical prospects has observed processes related to the
collection and preservation of erythrocytes, cells and tissues for the future healthcare
processes. Collection and preservation of Red Blood Cells and Platelets are part of such
medication that helps both in short term and long term treatments (Harmening, 2018).
However, as per Leeper et al. (2019), despite the application of several anticoagulants and
preservation in sodium, adenine, glucose, mannitol (SAGM), efficacy of the long term
storage of Platelets and RBCs were affected. Hence, modern advancement in this collection
and preservation of RBCs and Platelets should be discussed.
The modern preservation process of RBCs and Platelets include process of
cryopreservation and storage of RBCs and Platelets in frozen state so that the shelf life of the
stored RBC and Platelets could be increase (Kumar & Gill, 2018). Further, as per
Bozorgmanesh, SuttonBurges and Tablin (2017), this advancement in the preservation
technology has increased the accuracy and quality of the care process. Besides this, with
proper preservation and increased shelf life, these preserved cells could be used in treatment
of patients in their critical health conditions. As per Leeper et al. (2019), the modern
cryopreservation technique is effective in preserving the effectiveness of the blood cells with
its frost effects and involved intracellular cryoprotectants that helps to preserve the blood
cells for a longer time. Further, presence of Glycerol and Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) helps
in the cryopreservation process (Harmening, 2018).
Therefore, from the above-mentioned description, it is evident that the modern
technologies and advancement in the process of preservation of RBCs and Platelets has
increased the shelf life and accuracy of these processes, which has increased the quality of
care process.
