AI Summary
This essay provides a comparative analysis of synthetic and conventional motor oil, evaluating their respective advantages and disadvantages in the context of automotive applications. Synthetic oil, derived artificially, offers benefits such as slower degradation, extended lifespan, and reduced wear on engine components, particularly in cold weather. However, its longevity may lead to less frequent inspections, potentially delaying the detection of engine problems. Conventional motor oil, sourced from fossil fuels, is readily available but faces concerns regarding diminishing global reserves and environmental pollution from combustion byproducts. The essay advocates for the adoption of synthetic oil due to its environmental sustainability, reduced engine wear, and superior performance, highlighting its role in mitigating environmental impact and promoting resource conservation in the face of increasing automotive demand. MOTOR OIL AND SYNTHETIC OIL
Synthetic and conventional motor oil begin in the ground and this is the only
similarity between this two genera oil1. The following essay aims to perform a comparative
study between synthetic and motor oil based on their advantages and disadvantages in order
to ascertain which genera of oil is best suited for automobiles.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Synthetic Oil
Synthetic oil is a type of lubricant that artificially derived chemical and hence termed
as synthetic. The main advantage of synthetic oil over conventional motor oil is, synthetic oil
degrades slowly and thus has longer half-life than motor oil. This longer life span of synthetic
oil enables the car to gain longer mileage in between the oil refills. The other advantages of
synthetic oil include less wearing of engine spare parts especially during winters. Thus in one
sentence synthetic oil can be defined as thinner oil that resists temperature extremes and lasts
longer. However, the main advantage of synthetic oil turns out to be its disadvantage. The
fact that synthetic oil lasts longer, the driver or the car owner is less likely to open the hood of
the car at regular intervals to check the car's internal condition. So even if the there is a
problem inside the engine, in goes unnoticed until the time the driver opens to refill the
engine tank1.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Motor Oil
Conventional motor oil or mineral oil is produced from fossil fuel. This automotive
lubricant functions best with combustion-type engine. Conventional oil does not have hassle
towards manufacturing. Once an oil mine is spotted, the mining operations just require
drilling down to tap out the natural oil reservoir below. However, keeping into consideration
the exponential increase in the number of automobiles in comparison limited number of oil
mines, the global stock of conventional oil is going to exhaust in coming decades. Moreover,
combustion of conventional oil emits environmental pollutants. Thus in one sentence it can

be said that that used motor oil is insoluble, persistent and contain heavy metals and toxic
chemicals2.
Thus from the above discussion it can be said that with the increase in the number of
the automobiles, the demand of the automobile lubricant is also increasing. However, at time
will come in near future that the available stock of the conventional mineral oil will fail to
suffice the requirement. Moreover, the gaseous byproduct of motor oil combustion scores
high in the parameter of environmental pollutants posing a threat towards global warming. So
for the betterment of the environmental and for the sustainable use of the natural resources,
the use of synthetic oil should be preferred in comparison to motor oil. Moreover, low rate of
combustion and less engine spare part damage, makes synthetic oil more better choice for the
automobile.
