Essay 1
In the article, “How Your Birth Order Influences Your Life Adjustment”, adapted from
the essay by Lucille Forer states the reason of formation of mentality regarding life and
particular responsibility and standing in life of an individual is dependent on the order of their
birth. She says that a child’s perception of responsibility and perception of dependency is
directly proportioned to the order of birth in their family. The society and the family as well as a
different set of expectation from the child in the order of their birth. I agree because the family
structure in the society is embedded with the determination of the capacity and the psychological
formation of the individual basing it on the order of the birth. They decide the capability and is
predetermined even in the family how the individual should behave and grow up in the order of
their birth.
To begin with, the formation of this dependency of the children’s capacity and ability as
an individual starts from the family itself. The family members, the parents and the guardians
themselves hold respective and distinctly different expectation from their children. The oldest
child of the family is expected to be more responsible and grow up to be able to provide for their
younger sibling. According to the articles, “The oldest child comes to think about himself in the
same way.” In other words, the oldest child in the family grows up with the sense of
responsibility of providing for their younger siblings, and they feel the burden of responsibility
to be able to provide for them when they turn towards them for help. I can relate to this being a
middle child that every time I need help, I have the option to turn towards my elder brother.
Furthermore, the case of an only child in the family has been put forward correctly by the
author that they are to understand from their very childhood that they have to learn and be able to
sustain themselves and be prepared and self-sufficient as they will have no one to look up to or to

seek help apart from their parents. As the article states, “When my parents are not around, I have
no one to turn to for help. So I’d better learn to take care of myself as much as possible.” That is
to say, the concept of self-help is generated in the only child as they can see themselves to be
independent and responsible for their action and its consequences in the absence of their parents.
This leads them to learn things with a willingness to equip themselves with the ways and
methods which can help in self-sustenance and understand the concept of being responsible for
their own self. This reminds me of a friend who was the only child in the family, being able to tie
her shoelace and pack her lunch way before others in our class could do. Just as Lucille points
out the order of birth where the middle child has both the experience of being able to look for
help towards parents as well as the older siblings, he has the sense of responsibility towards the
younger sibling as well.
In conclusion, one can say that the order of birth and the significant amount of
institutionalization done by the family as well as the society shapes up the individual character
and personality in terms of responsibility and is even judged by them in the society.

Essay 2
In the article, “Hype” published in ‘Signs of life in the USA: Readings on Popular
Culture for Writers,’ by Kalle Lasn states the use of technology in the field of advertisement was
the beginning of the end for the freedom of human mind. He says that advertisement has taken
up every big and small part of our lives where our brain could have taken a break and now those
times, those breaks are being utilized as the time for commercial America to feed us their
growing power of providing. He shows us how capitalism as devoured the little breaks which
were used for imagination, socialization and creativity has been replaced with mindless feeding
of these advertisements. I agree because while growing up, waiting for a school bus used to be a
place where we used to talk about our home works, our innovative plays where our robots turn
into world-saving hero, and some future poet used to sit in the corner and dive into their sea of
thoughts, but now the bus stand, the poles of the buses and the buses themselves are covered
with advertisements of something or the other.
To begin with, the meaning of advertisements have changed; it is no longer an attempt to
introduce or attract a buyer towards their product but to mark their ownership. The logos or the
advertisement of the brands and its prevalent nature has become the symbol of its grasp over
society. According to the article, “Every day an estimated 12 billion commercial ads, 3 million
radio commercials, and more than 200,000 TV commercials are dumped into America’s
collective unconscious.” In other words, whether a person is using technology or not, the
capitalism of commercialization has touched everyone in the society. I can certainly relate to us
singing songs which used to be a part of our favourite cartoon character, but my younger siblings
sing along with the advertisements when it comes on TV.

Furthermore, the advertisement has become the symbol of the present power of a brand.
As the article states, “There is nowhere to run. No one is exempt, and no one will be
spared.” This is to say, that every little and possible place and time which was assessed as the
time where the consumer eyes and brain could rest have been occupied with an advertisement.
This reminds me of the advertisements that we get during the use of educative videos which we
watch in our classes and how the advertisement of all kinds have to be watched irrespective of
our choices. Just as Kalle points in the ‘Hype’ the interactive screen installed in the carts of the
supermarket consumes the time between browsing for products to buy as well.
In conclusion, one can say that commercialization in America has more presence in the
consumer’s mind than the product themselves. The concept of advertisement to introduce the
product or the brand to the consumer has been altered completely and has been replaced by brand
obsession in them.

Essay 3
In the article, “Hang It Up,” by Jesse Scaccia states that the use of electronic devices by
students inside the classroom has shortened their attention span and hence has been seen as the
main cause of the failing grades in them. She says that though the uses of electronic devices are
many and undeniable, in the hands of children who are not yet conscious enough to limit the use
and to understand its implication on their curriculum can be risky and detrimental for their
academic period. I agree because sitting in the class, I myself finds it very easy to use electronic
devices if the subject gets a little hard to understand or boring. Instead of asking of teacher’s help
in understanding and clarifying it, most of us tend to use our electronic devices and the social
media, and its different eccentricities are always more attractive than the method of sentence
construction for us.
To begin with, the use of cellphone and the introduction of the android system has given
another meaning to it for parents and children. The parents think of the cellphone as a mean of
connectivity with their children, on the other hand, for the children it has become the mode to
assert their presence on social media and to reflect their social life. According to the article, “One
reason students fail is because of distractions in the classroom, specifically the cellphone.” In
other words, the failing grades of the students are largely the results of excessive use of
cellphones, especially inside the classroom. I can relate to the time where we did not have the
social media obsession and the classroom and the classes used to be interesting due to the various
question raised by us. Just as the article points out, it is a struggle to keep the students within the
classroom mentally.

Furthermore, the parents' misconception of their children carrying cellphones to public
school as they consider it as a means to be connected to their children and as a symbol of
security. As the article states, “Cellphones are status symbols.” That is to say that cellphones’
meaning for students, teachers and parents have different meanings due to which the parents fail
to understand the school’s decision to put a strict ban on the use of cellphones inside the
classroom. That reminds me of the time once when our school bus broke down while returning
home, none of us with cellphones had any battery left to make a call. Just as Jesse points it out in
the article ‘Hype’ that parents stance here to allow cellphones inside the classroom is not a right
decision for students as it does not serve the purpose of security any longer.
In conclusion, the use of cellphones does more harm and risk the educational process and
in a way takes away the attention power of the students and they are diverted by the attractions of
social media which gives them the wrong impression of life and reality.
