Homework Assignment
AI Summary
This assignment assesses a student's understanding of environmental sustainability in an aeronautical engineering workplace. The student summarizes the working environment of an aviation maintenance facility, focusing on hangars, control towers, and aircraft cockpits. The assignment identifies and analyzes environmental issues such as poor ventilation, air quality, and noise pollution, as well as resource efficiency concerns like energy conservation and waste reduction. The student identifies resources like water and money, detailing how they would be organized and measured. Furthermore, the assignment explores environmental hazards, including noise and physical hazards, and outlines a scenario involving a workplace environmental hazard incident, including reporting procedures. Finally, the student summarizes a news report on manufacturing hazards, highlighting sustainability aspects such as improved power consumption and sustainable repairs, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of environmental challenges and sustainable practices within the aviation industry.

Q:1. Summarise the workplace setting you have used for this assignment.
A: the working environment of the aviation industry revolves around the aircraft and the
places where the aircrafts are parked that is the hangar. The working environment may also
refer to the operations of the traffic control towers and designs of the aircraft cockpit. With
regard to environmental constraint, the cockpit represents the most extreme environmental
surroundings in regards to the operational hazards and design constraints. The article will
therefore focus on the working environment in the control towers, the hangars and the aircraft
cockpits. Operational factors and design concepts that affect the environment like the traffic
control and the ramp while maintaining the work station can be extrapolated easily.
Q: 2 Identify two workplace environmental issues in your workplace scenario.
A: 2.1 ventilation and bad air quality- the hangar where I work from is not well ventilated and
while servicing the aircrafts, we face major challenges such as bad air from the serviced
engines.
2.2 health and comfort issues due to the asbestos riddled structures and roofing’s from the
hangar that can lead to poor health and sickness. Environmental pollution such as noise
pollution is also a major issue in the workplace due to aircraft arrivals and departures near the
airport.
Q: 3. Identify two workplace resource efficiency issues in your workplace scenario.
3.1 in the workplace, the major resource efficiency issues is improved energy conservation.
The use of solar panels reduce electricity intake is a major efficiency issue in our workplace.

3.2reduced wastes- the company has adopted measure of reducing wastes through
purchase of environmentally friendly items such as recyclable cans for drinking water for the
staff while also recycling water used in the place.
Q: 4. Identify two resources used in your worker’s work environment.
A: 4.1 Water for cleaning especially the workshop.
4.2 Money- used in buying any item needed by the workers for cleaning the environment
or marinating as clean environment like detergents, soap and other cleaning materials
Q: 5. Refer to the question 4 above and explain how you would organise these.
A: 5.1 the money will be organized to take care of all the necessary needs for keeping a safe
and a hospitable environment.
5.2 water as a resource will be organized by being used prudently and ensuring that there
is minimum wastage.
Q: 6.Suggest how would you measure the usage of each of the resources listed in 4.1 and
4.2 above.
A : 6.1the usage of water is measured by the number of gallons used to clean. There is also a
budget for the amount of water allocated for the work. Fairly, it would be impossible to
measure the amount of water used unless in monetary form.
6.2 The money used for everything else in the workplace can only be measured using a
budget and the actual figure used. If the money used exceeds the actual budget it is a loss to
the company and vice versa.

Q:7. Suggest how you would record the usage of each of resources in 4.1 and 4.2 above.
A: 7.1 The record of the resources mentioned above would be done in books of financial
position of the company. A profit and loss account, P&l account would record the expenses
of water as a resource.
7.2 money as a resource used in the workplace would be recorded in a cash flow statement
showing the amount of money in and out of a particular event or activity such as amount used
in cleaning of the workplace court or hangar.
Q:8. Identify two environmental hazards/ issues that your chosen worker may
encounter in his/her work role.
A: 8.1 Noise pollution- Working close to an airport or in a hangar has a lot of risks of noise
pollution due to the large sounds made by big and small aircraft engines. Noise pollution is
the major type of environmental hazard. In the event of repair of an engine, a worker is likely
to encounter a lot of noise pollution.
8.2 physical hazards such as flying objects caused by winds or even air pollution caused
by large amounts of smoke emitted by aircraft engines. . Environmental pollution such as
noise pollution is also a major issue in the workplace due to aircraft arrivals and departures
near the airport. Air pollution may be witnessed whenever a large aircraft is leaving the
airport.

Q:9. Outline a scenario where a workplace environmental hazard incident has
occurred.
A: 9.1 Explain how you would report this in a suitable manner to the appropriate workplace
person.
I would notify the person in charge of operations in the workplace of the environmental
hazard incident by word of mouth in a cautious way. However, for a comprehensive report, I
would write a formal notification report or letter to the concerned person if the environmental
hazardous incident is very serious and would like urgent lookout.
9.2 Identify who in your scenario’s workplace is the most appropriate person to report
this matter to.
1. The operations manager- because he or she is the head of operations within the workplace.
2. any of my colleague at my level because it would be easier to be open to him or her about
the incident although he would not be at a position of influence
Q 10 Find one piece of news or report(within last two years) that shows a
manufacturing/ engineering workplace and covers aspects of one environmental hazard/
topic that may/ does apply in your company’s context.
10.2 Internet source URL: https://safestart.com/news/7-common-manufacturing-hazards-
when-working-robots/
10.3 Summarise the news/ report into two bullet points.
Document Page

10.3.1 environmental issues in manufacture and assembly of robots
10.3.2 common hazards or robot accidents encountered during testing and repair
10.4 Identify two sustainability aspects involved.
10.4.1 Improvement in power consumption of the robots.
10.4.2 sustainable repairs and improvement
