This consultancy project investigates the feasibility of establishing a specialist sustainability finance unit within the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) to promote sustainable lending and provide technical advisory support for environmentally sound projects in West Africa. It addresses the challenges AFC faces in balancing economic development with environmental sustainability commitments. The study examines opportunities, challenges, and risks from various stakeholder perspectives, covering topics such as environmental challenges in West Africa, sustainable lending trends, the role of AFC, and risk assessment. It also analyzes the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) related to sustainable development in the region, ultimately providing recommendations for establishing the unit, addressing stakeholder issues, and navigating ethical challenges. The research utilizes literature reviews and stakeholder analysis to assess the viability and strategic fit of such a unit within AFC's broader regional objectives.
